Iowa Press Release on Brandon Hutton Being Granted Release

Hate to say it, but Fran's recruiting pretty much stinks.

All those freshman, only Wagner gave a LITTLE bit to the team.

In this day and age of college basketball, if you recruit 5 incoming freshman, and you have to redshirt 2 and the other 3 are glued to the pine, well... It tells us your recruiting stinks.

Fran's recruiting has been pretty good, actually. It could always get better, but it's been pretty good all things considered.

I didn't. HawkeyeWalker brought up Woodbury in response to my appraisal of Hutton. Page 4. You can read that and the following response. Woody actually provides what I think Hutton could too. Toughness, Defense and rebounding. But they aren't the same player. Hutton is an explosive athlete that can guard on the perimeter. That's not a knock on Woody! Most 7'0 Centers CAN'T guard perimeter players. And they aren't explosive athletes! The 7'0 Centers that fit that description are 1 and done NBA players. That's why I said it was ridiculous to compare Hutton to Woodbury. Here is HawkeyeWalker's comment with my comment that he quoted, above it.

You just described our starting center from this year, who gets very little love on HN.

And I stand by my response. How, in the blue Helll, is it not 100% accurate.

Fine. But you didn't bother to see the previous comments and why I said that. Here it is. I"ll include my first description, then the part where HawkeyeWalker tried to bring Woodbury into this.

" He's everything we lacked on this year's team. Tough, nasty kid that plays defense with an attitude. Explosive athlete! I'm sure he sat on the bench and just got more angry with each passing game.
Now I'm ****** off. The kid with the most heart just left the building."

That's the comment that brought Woodbury into the discussion. I most certainly wasn't trying to compare Hutton to Woodbury and responded to HawkeyeWalker by pointing out that Hutton is an explosive athlete as well as being able to defend on the perimeter, so his attempt to compare Hutton's game to Woody, was ridiculous.

If you were paying attention to what was being said from the start, you'd see why I said the things I did.

No, I did not compare Hutton to Woody. I simply stated the statement you made described the positive contribution we got from Woody.

Ok. I thought you were being sneaky. His contribution would have been similar but more on the wing/perimeter.And way more athletic

To be fair, Oglesby? Really? Uhls pretty garbage. Baers a walkon for a reason and the 6 freshman this year havent done much. The remaining 4 may still but Wagner was the only one who contributed. Wagners game is limited too. Its a redflag to me when both moss and hutton redshirted but the others didn't.... Who recruited these guys and why did they give up on them so quick? What changed in a year?

Also, Ellingson should be stirring the gatorade and thats about it.

Oglesby was a top 125ish kid. He had offers from Arizona St., Illinois, Minnesota (when they were good), jNW, and Providence. He was a pretty good recruit to get coming off the Lick years for sure.

That may be the dumbest post in the thread. On a team with 4 Senior starters and an All B1G quality Junior please tell the class which one you'd sit down so these unproven Freshmen can get some minutes. And, of course, they should all play ahead of Clemmons and Uhl...

While you're at it please explain why Baer, Wagner and Williams should sit while these Freshmen are in the game. Oh... wait... they are Freshmen...

Sheesh...

He sure didnt play or develop to be a top 125ish kid after 4 years

Hold on. You are under the impression that all recruits play/perform to their recruiting rankings? Probably a good things they don't otherwise Marble, White, Jok, and Olaseni all wouldn't have done what they did here.

Getting a top 125 kid to commit after the Lick debacle was a good recruiting get.

Fran has excelled at finding under the radar talent who end up outperforming their expectations. He has struggled at landing the handful of elite recruits he's gone after. That's why Tyler Cook was such a big commitment. The frustration level would have been at an all time high with Iowa basketball recruiting if Cook wouldn't have committed. Fran and his staff needed one of those highly sought after guys to come aboard.

Obviously Baer will get one of the schollies that recently opened up and deservedly so. I don't know why you wouldn't be excited about his future. He's the one guy who showed up and played well against Villanova. It will be interesting to see how the other one is used though.

I'm starting to think Fran is great at identifying talent and he gets them to sign. But when you look at a kid with 4* talent and a 2* list of offers...it makes you scratch your head. Then you see that they don't play defense and aren't mentally/physically tough enough when the pressure builds. And you realize why they didn't get more offers.
I don't see us ever getting a BIG title with him. He doesn't recruit defense and toughness. Too many other BIG coaches do. Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

I think the bolded statement is ridiculous. Of course he recruits it. That doesn't mean he gets them to sign. You act like it's a given that Fran can go get kids to pick Iowa over the likes of MSU, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and OSU. It's not as easy as you make it sound. Some of the things you're talking about aren't easy to measure either. Mike Gesell was a flat out stud in high school. At that time there were absolutely no reasons to be concerned about him being mentally fragile in late game situations. That's the way it played out though. Newsflash! No coach in D1 basketball is capable of predicting the future. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you strike out. At Iowa, Fran has to take chances on some guys and he has to hope he gets lucky in order to win a B10 championship or advance further the tourney. Once he does that then he may be able to better compete against the elite programs in the B10 for recruits, but until then he's going to be behind the 8ball just like anyone else would be in his shoes.

I just want to make one thing clear though. His mistakes or failures in recruiting are not for lack of trying. You saying he doesn't recruit defense or toughness is complete BS.

Yep. As an example I think Wagner with a bit more experience will exhibit both.

Fran has already gotten lucky on a couple guys. Marble and Uthoff. The problem with Marble was the supporting cast wasn't in place yet because we were still so close to the Lick years. With Uthoff, the supporting cast was there but Uthoff didn't quite have the mindset he needed to lead us to a championship. Couple that with a little bit of bad luck with how Gesell developed (he was good but could have been great) and you end up with a team who fell just short. Next time he gets lucky and gets a 1st team Big 10 player, all the pieces should be in place.

What's good is Fran seems to be fitting lucky with recruits more than most programs. If Jok gets 1st team next year it will be 4 years in a row with getting lucky. I'm hoping Weiscamp is the next Uthoff talent wise. If he is, we will be really good his sophomore year and beyond.

This isn't directed at you PC...just a comment. People need to remember Gesell was hurt most of his career. He was having a good year for a true freshman and then got hurt at Nebraska...missing the next 4 games. He then played hurt (on 1 good foot) in the NIT.

I believe he broke his hand during PTL play between his freshman and sophomore years. That shut him down and/or limited him the entire off season and appeared to affect his shot as a sophomore.

His junior year he injured his elbow and couldn't shoot from beyond 17 feet.

This year he was healthy all year...as far as I know. But the injuries throughout his career stunted his growth as an offensive player IMO.

I agree. Fran has certainly been lucky with the way a few of his players have turned out. I would argue that the role players around guys like Uthoff, Jok, White, and Marble were an issue though. They just didn't provide enough offense to even be considered a consistent threat. None of them did. Woodbury, Gesell, Olaseni, McCabe, Clemmons, Oglesby, and Basabi all struggled mightily on the offensive end. One or two players can't carry a team offensively. Well they can, but not to the level of success that we're talking about. Plus clutch play has always been an issue. That just takes a certain kind of player, and for whatever reason Iowa hasn't had it. Not even with their "star" players. Again, that's something that's very hard to quantify in recruiting.

I do love what the Hawks have coming down the pipeline though. Weiskamp has me pumped. Combine him with the McCaffery boys, Pemsl, and Cook and the not so distant future looks pretty bright. We'll see how Bohannon turns out. His family is full of guys who just play ball so I hope he falls in line with that. I don't think there's any reason to expect anything differently. Fran could definitely use another elite PG recruit though. That would round out the future very well.

These first few years under Fran have been a transition from dead to relevant. We should be able to put 5 more well rounded players on the court together moving forward.
