Iowa Press Release on Brandon Hutton Being Granted Release

I also described him as an explosive athlete. Which none of us would ever mistake Woodbury for. Nor can Woodbury effectively defend perometer players. But other than that.....sure.

Neither could Hammons, Haas or Costello... very few 6'10"+ can. Gabe O. was one of the very few that could. I think even Kaminsky struggled with outside coverage. Weak argument... Figured someone who's around 'it' would know that.

Did you complain about it when Fran got a top 50 kid in Woodbury to sign with Iowa over Roy Williams and UNC?

Woody was what he was, and by that he was a HUGE reason as to why Iowa has gone from the basement of the B1G to finishing tied for 3rd two years in a row, and is a huge reason we have made 3 consecutive NCAA tournaments.

I'm not trashing Woodbury and have been one of his vocal supporters this year. He plays good post defense, fights for position and rebounds. That part of his game has improved steadily. And it has NOTHING to do with my comment. Someone was trying to draw comparison between my appraisal of Hutton to Woody's game. I simply pointed out the ridiculousness of their comment.

My question is how do any of us know he was going to be that good or a contributor? Not speaking ill of the kid, because he always appeared (based on my limited observations of him on the sidelines) that he was always a supportive teammate and engaged during the games. Maybe he just wasn't good enough or didn't show the potential or maybe he didn't want to wait around another year or two to see if he was going to get playing time. None of that is his fault, but it's not McCaffery's either.

This is one thing I know about basketball and not a single coach has ever disagreed with.

Defense and rebounding are very important to the game of basketball. When you have an athletic kid with the attitude and willingness to do those things, there's always a place for them on your roster. Always! You can have bad shooting nights. Teams can design defenses to take away your best offensive player. There are a number of reasons why a players offensive performance is worse than expected.
Hustle, athleticism and the desire to play defense and rebound is something you can bring EVERY NIGHT!
There is nothing the other team can do to limit those qualities.
We've all seen our fair share of good offensive players that didn't play defense. When their shot isn't falling, what do they give you? They are wasted space on the floor. Nothing more.
Woodbury is a great example of this. His offensive game is hot garbage! He missed more bunnies over his 4 years than any Iowa player I can recall. But he played defense and he rebounded. And it was huge for us.

Hutton isn't a power forward or a center!!! He's 6'5 and he can effectively guard 2s, 3s and some 4s. Now tell me 1 of the guys you listed that are capable of that??
For cripes sake! I think some of you just like to argue because you don't even read the thread to get context, before you chime in!
What the hell are you talking about?

Anybody here think having a 6'5 defender/rebounder might have come in handy off the bench when Loving (OSU) was dropping 25 on us? When Coleman-Lands (I'll) was shredding us? How about the 2 from PSU?
I don't care what else a 7 minute per game FR gives me! If he can help me slow down guys like that, I'll take him.

Hey lightning, Woody and Hutton aren't even the same type of player so why are you even comparing them?

Any chance for you to bash Woody I guess.

Lol. Go fck yourself. I don't bash Woody. I love his toughness, defense and rebounding. His offensive game is garbage. That's my opinion and if that's what you consider "bashing" Woody......that's your problem, not mine.

If you love him, why did you bring him up out of nowhere and start talking about how bad his perimeter defense was and how many layups he's missed?

Those that are thinking this is such a bad deal for the program just don't get it. I've seen others mention the size of the last class being 5 kids and the next being large also. When you have a top heavy SR class like this year was this was just bound to happen. The landscape is just different then 20-30 yrs ago. Players now want to play. It becomes a decision for guys that are role players/tweeners when it becomes apparent that they won't be studs on whether they want to do that or find somewhere else to go. Years ago it just wasn't like this. There are a lot of good players out there and the cashe of playing at a big school isn't necessarily priority 1 for guys. You'll get kids that'd rather play a lot at a UNI rather then bench warm at Kansas and never play... Teams are always recruiting behind you once your there too. At least they are trying to...

Wrong Dickerson. Trey sat out this year.

Strange. When you go to USD's web site: only one Dickerson is in the team photo, only one Dickerson is listed on the roster. In the stats they show up as Zach Dickerson, even though he's not listed on the team roster or in the team photo.

Anybody who thinks Hutton is GOOD for the program just doesn't understand basketball at all.

Hate to say it, but Fran's recruiting pretty much stinks.

All those freshman, only Wagner gave a LITTLE bit to the team.

In this day and age of college basketball, if you recruit 5 incoming freshman, and you have to redshirt 2 and the other 3 are glued to the pine, well... It tells us your recruiting stinks.

The best recruiter I have seen at Iowa in the forty years I have followed Iowa basketball has got to be George Raveling. Everyone is pale in comparison. No pun intended on the "Pale" adjective. :)
