Iowa Press Release on Brandon Hutton Being Granted Release

When 2 coaches are having similar success and one is at a power 5 school with the other at a mid major, odds are pretty good that the power 5 coach is better. Just like if a high school coach has the same success as a mid major coach, the mid major coach is better.

That's very profound for a Monday morning.

UNI and Iowa are apples and oranges. UNI should have never achieved what they did with such a limited bench which ultimately led to their "embarrassment". Still it is over achieving which is a good thing.

A big question is whether or not Iowa overachieved or underachieved. There is the argument that they finished about where they should have (which I agree with), but at the same time the end was a collapse and that cannot be hidden. Something like that begs for analysis.

Iowa's season ended with a loss to a team playing in the National Championship game; that beat the overall #1 seed on a bad shooting night; and made their Final Four opponent look like Rutgers. Analyze away.

I'm sorry.....is math too difficult for you? 23 > 22, by 1 more game. Maybe next week we can discuss Hawkeye Nation math. Where addition by subtraction is a good thing.

So I guess using your math:

  • Valparaiso was better than us. At the end of the regular season and conference tournament, they were 26-6. Of course their KenPom rating is 40, a full 17 places behind Iowa.
  • George Washington was better than us. At the end of the regular season and conference tournament, they were 23-10. Of course their KenPom rating is 47, a full 24 places behind Iowa.
  • UC Irvine was better than us. At the end of the regular season and conference tournament, they were 25-9. Of course their KenPom rating is 75, a full 52 places behind Iowa.

These are just three examples of teams who had more wins. It's not just about wins; there were 75 teams in the NCAA DI that had more wins than Iowa and 30 of them did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament. It's about quality of wins. UC Irvine didn't even qualify for the NIT - they played in the CBI (and lost in the championship game).

Am I the only one who feels like this is lightning1 in this thread?

The average IQ in the U.S is 98. I'm guessing that you guys represent the bulk of the masses.

Checking in, has anyone agreed with you yet?

123 here.

Both UNI and Iowa had pretty good years overall, both have solid coaches. Beyond that, not sure there's an absolute argument to be won here. What's the argument again?

Sounds like Fran is up front with these kids and they know where they stand and what he wants to see out of them.

“It wasn’t anything academic; I’m doing pretty well with academics,” Hutton said. “It wasn’t anything like be in trouble with the law or anything like that. It wasn’t anything with Coach Fran McCaffery or having any run-ins with him. It wasn’t anything like that. The program just wasn’t the right fit for me, and I wasn’t the right fit for the program.”
Hutton wants to focus on refining his game and earn playing time at his next stop.
“I don’t find this year at the University of Iowa to be a waste,” Hutton said. “I learned a lot. I have experienced a lot. I have that under my belt.
“It’s all about progression. It’s all about me enhancing my basketball skills, enhancing my basketball IQ. Just using this upcoming year to perfect my game. I feel like going to a juco will most definitely help me with that, and I won’t have to sit a whole another year.”

Nice to see those comments. The last comment is what sticks out to me the most. Translated: He doesn't want to end up on the bench next year. That's why it isn't a good fit. I respect him for being so classy about it though. Hope he does well wherever he ends up. Seems like a good kid.

I agree with this.
