Iowa Press Release on Brandon Hutton Being Granted Release

This isn't directed at you PC...just a comment. People need to remember Gesell was hurt most of his career. He was having a good year for a true freshman and then got hurt at Nebraska...missing the next 4 games. He then played hurt (on 1 good foot) in the NIT.

I believe he broke his hand during PTL play between his freshman and sophomore years. That shut him down and/or limited him the entire off season and appeared to affect his shot as a sophomore.

His junior year he injured his elbow and couldn't shoot from beyond 17 feet.

This year he was healthy all year...as far as I know. But the injuries throughout his career stunted his growth as an offensive player IMO.

Interesting point. I can see how 2 years of injuries could not only prevent you from improving your shot, but could actually make it worse from developing bad tendencies and losing confidence.

I agree. Fran has certainly been lucky with the way a few of his players have turned out. I would argue that the role players around guys like Uthoff, Jok, White, and Marble were an issue though. They just didn't provide enough offense to even be considered a consistent threat. None of them did. Woodbury, Gesell, Olaseni, McCabe, Clemmons, Oglesby, and Basabi all struggled mightily on the offensive end. One or two players can't carry a team offensively. Well they can, but not to the level of success that we're talking about. Plus clutch play has always been an issue. That just takes a certain kind of player, and for whatever reason Iowa hasn't had it. Not even with their "star" players. Again, that's something that's very hard to quantify in recruiting.

I do love what the Hawks have coming down the pipeline though. Weiskamp has me pumped. Combine him with the McCaffery boys, Pemsl, and Cook and the not so distant future looks pretty bright. We'll see how Bohannon turns out. His family is full of guys who just play ball so I hope he falls in line with that. I don't think there's any reason to expect anything differently. Fran could definitely use another elite PG recruit though. That would round out the future very well.

I think Fleming had that killer instinct on offense. Too bad he was so impatient. Jok and Marble were horrendous on defense their freshmen years and both turned out ok on that end.

Doesn't Fran's sons play with a pretty damn good PG on their high school team? Lane or something? What's the word on his recruiting?

It was just a few years ago Fran let Lohaus and Morgan loose from Iowa City and they seem to be having pretty damn good careers over in Cedar Falls. Watching Morgan light it up in the tourney made me cringe a bit.

Regarding Morgan, I'm pretty sure we only had 1 scholly to give that year and it went to Pete. Can't say I'd trade.

What's good is Fran seems to be fitting lucky with recruits more than most programs. If Jok gets 1st team next year it will be 4 years in a row with getting lucky. I'm hoping Weiscamp is the next Uthoff talent wise. If he is, we will be really good his sophomore year and beyond.

I watched Wieskamp play a few games this year. My brother goes to all the home games. Wieskamp had a down shooting year percentage wise and still led the MAC in scoring (20+), rebounding (9+) and blocks; he plays a kind of hybrid 2/3 position. The MAC is one of the toughest athletic conferences in the state of Iowa. He doesn't loaf on defense. While he doesn't handle the ball the most, the offense ran through him. The games I watched he could have had twice the number of assists if the kids could catch the ball and shoot layups. The best thing about him is that he's a good kid who get good grades.

Hold on. You are under the impression that all recruits play/perform to their recruiting rankings? Probably a good things they don't otherwise Marble, White, Jok, and Olaseni all wouldn't have done what they did here.

Getting a top 125 kid to commit after the Lick debacle was a good recruiting get.

Ohh got ya, only when it fits yer argument.

Thats cleared up

I think the bolded statement is ridiculous. Of course he recruits it. That doesn't mean he gets them to sign. You act like it's a given that Fran can go get kids to pick Iowa over the likes of MSU, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and OSU. It's not as easy as you make it sound. Some of the things you're talking about aren't easy to measure either. Mike Gesell was a flat out stud in high school. At that time there were absolutely no reasons to be concerned about him being mentally fragile in late game situations. That's the way it played out though. Newsflash! No coach in D1 basketball is capable of predicting the future. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you strike out. At Iowa, Fran has to take chances on some guys and he has to hope he gets lucky in order to win a B10 championship or advance further the tourney. Once he does that then he may be able to better compete against the elite programs in the B10 for recruits, but until then he's going to be behind the 8ball just like anyone else would be in his shoes.

I just want to make one thing clear though. His mistakes or failures in recruiting are not for lack of trying. You saying he doesn't recruit defense or toughness is complete BS.
Actually, defense and toughness are easy to find and recruit. Jacobsen/UNI does a much better job of finding it than Fran does! Explain that to me and we'll continue to have this conversation.

We got 1 guy coming back next year that can guard the 1/2/3 spots (Jok) and Jok isn't a good on ball defender. Lets assume Moss can guard someone, that's 2. Williams didn't show me anything. Ellingsen can't guard anyone. Neither can Bohannon. BIG guards are going to eat our lunch next season.

Would you complain now if we signed a top 125 kid? I'm not sure what you are even complaining about anyway? Are you mad the recruiting services were wrong, or that Fran got him to play at Iowa?

No. He's everything we lacked on this year's team. Tough, nasty kid that plays defense with an attitude. Explosive athlete! I'm sure he sat on the bench and just got more angry with each passing game.
Now I'm ****** off. The kid with the most heart just left the building.

Nice, you never saw him play a game but he clearly had the most heart on the Hawks. Please!

They must have some really tough players to win one more game playing in the MVC.

Yeah. Beating UNC and ISU with a bunch of 2* and
NO* players is something anyone can do. I'm surprised North Carolina didn't have 15 or 16 losses in the OOC schedule.

In the MVC. Which is a 2 team league.

Ben is a good coach. But no better than Fran.

Average recruiting rank of each player and their offer lists on UNI's team is = to Iowa's. Across the board. I can't think of UNI's starting Center but I'm sure he had offers from North Carolina, etc. I'm sure Ben Jacobsen out recruited a lot of Power 5 programs for the players on his roster. Right?

We aren't going to be able to guard a no parking sign, next season! When it finally dawns on you guys, maybe you'll remember this thread and realize what I'm talking about.
Then again....most of you probably won't!

Upsets happen all the time. Is this your first year watching basketball? When we were terrible and beat number 6 Purdue, does that mean Fran was an awesome coach and we were way tougher than Purdue?

UNI's center that didn't have offers from North Carolina was going up against a bunch of centers who didn't have any power 5 offers. It's all relative. Don't cherry pick the 2 good teams they beat and overlook at the terrible teams they lost to. I really hope you're just trying to mess around with everyone.
