Iowa not in Final 3 for Katenda

a) I said "one of the worst", not the worst.

b) Looking at that list, on paper, I say we have a shot against Colorado and maybe Texas Tech.

You are the eternal optimist, Stormin'.

Again, I want Iowa to win every game. But, I am REALISTIC. I know we cannot win most of the games we play.

And we haven't had a winning record since before most of the players joined the Hawks.

So how does it go down in your house with your wife and kids, just being REALISTIC?

Yes honey you do look fat in those pants, as a matter of fact you look fat without pants!

Hey kids, you aren't as smart as the Smith's kids, as athletic as the Jone's kids, or as good looking as the Miller's? Why are you stupid, clumsy, and ugly?

I love how people who are constantly negative say "I'm just REALISTIC!" I'm being REALISTIC saying your negative posting attitude on this board sucks. Don't get me wrong I want you to be a better poster, but I know that you cannot......

I completely agree that guards are far more important to a team than big guys. However, this team still has to make up a huge talent gap in the Big Ten. I would like to see how you feel about the newcomers on this team once the Big Ten season gets here. Iowa still hasn't played a top 25 team yet, so it is to early to judge how well they stack up against NCAA teams. Now Cartwright and Basabe are nice because their athleticism helps Iowa win games that they struggled to win last year, but once the Big Ten gets here everyone will be as or more athletic than they are. That is when we will see how bright the future can be with this team.

I will feel the same way about the 2010 class as I did the 2009 class. Eric May has not let me down in any way this year, except ball-handling, other than that he has been good. Unfortunately, Payne is not able to show how he has grown. This 2010 class is good, are they going to take lumps, sure, but will they give up when it gets tough in the Big Ten? I am going to say no, they will continue to play hard. Iowa will have a chance in almost all of their home games in Conference and has some winnable road games. Even if they only win 3 games, what matters is how they compete. This year is a year to lay the foundation, next year we will see the dividends, but I will enjoy watching this team unless a lot of games turn into blowouts, then it is no fun for anyone.

a) I am not married, nor do I have children.

b) So, you are OK with the way the things have gone for Iowa basketball since Steve Alford left? Really. i wonder how 'less than mediocrity' goes down in YOUR household. Sorry, but i am not going to sit idly by and just count on 'moral victories' like some refer to. Because, 'moral victories' are never victories. they are only talked about after a team loses.

and we are doing that a heckuva lot more than we did just 4 season ago.

Do you really think the way things are going in Iowa City that we will get even the best Iowa kids to want to play ball here - out of loyalty to being an Iowa fan? No. It started with Raef LaFrentz and has trickled down since then.

Nobody goes to Iowa out of loyalty anymore. Sure, we could get the second tier Iowa kids to go here and live their dream of being a Hawkeye. I would have loved to had the opportunity. If I ever have kids, and they are recruited by Iowa, they WILL go to Iowa or not live in my house. Period.

DeanVogs, if you cannot be realistic about the Iowa basketball program than I guess reality will not settle in.

Have I seen improvement? Yes.
Have I seen decline? Yes.
Have I seen more decline than improvement? Yes.
Do I think we have the talent to compete and win against the better teams of the Big Ten? No.

I say all of these negative things because I am freaking frustrated with the state of affairs in Iowa City right now.

I hate being a laughing stock in BT basketball.
I hate not having anything to look forward to in March anymore.
I hate that the only thing that is making me MAD AGAIN is the Iowa keeps losing again, and again, and again.

The players feel the same way.

So, if you want to chastise me, DeanVogs, for seeing what is REALISTICALLY happening in Carver-Hawkeye and with the UIowa Mens hoops team, go for it.

Look in the mirror. Look at the paper clippings. Look at the win-loss record. THAT is reality.

And, the reality is we are mired in the worst period of basketball in the history of the University of Iowa.

And, look at the roster. Most of these kids return. Kids do not got from being 5.0ppg guys to 15-17ppg guys and All-BT performers. That stuff rarely happens.

We are not getting the best recruits in the state, let alone the Midwest, let alone the nation, to come to Iowa City anymore.

That is REALITY.
This is not the football team. Basketball cannot make a team full of 2 star recruits into March teams every year. That happens in the lower level conferences because they have a guaranteed spot.

I am an Iowa fan. Period. But I am not going to take the glass half full route all the time.

I am sick of it being empty all the time.

This is not going to change overnight. Nor is it going to change in 2011-12. Nor is it going to change in 2012-13. It could take 4-6 years to get into the Big Dance.

And, when it does, I will be cheering loudly. Just like you.

In my realistic house....with my hopefully realistic wife and children.

I wasn't happy with the way things were going when Alford was there...players not qualifying, players were leaving, Iowa only having six freshman in his tenure actually graduating from Iowa. Arrests and players getting kicked off for drugs and alcohol. The only difference between his tenure and Lick's was they did win. I was happy with wins, but not the image of the program. Now, I like the image of the program and the wins are going to come. We have the right staff for Iowa, it already shows.
Is Iowa better than last year? Absolutely. Will they win more than 10 games? Don't know because every team has improved as Iowa has.
As for 'moral victories' I will take them, there have been no victories in a few years.

Actually your post only validates what I think of your posting, and what I said. Nobody is happy with the state of the basketball at Iowa over the last several years. I'm pretty sure everyone on this board knows we are going to struggle this year and next. We don't need to b!tch and moan, and point that out on a daily basis, WHEN EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS AND ACKNOWLEDGES THIS.

I realize that you probably want this team to win as much or even more than anyone else on this board. We are all true fans, we are just built differently. I can't sit and b!tch and whine about the obvious all day, every day when we all know we are starting over and re-building the program. I just think to myself what a miserable way to live if that were my attitude all the time.....It works for you, that is fine....Just don't be surprised when it wears thin on the rest of us....

You know how inaccurate Kenpom is this early in the season...they are still using 3 baseline games for every team...Iowa's are buoying it's ranking considerably. Be realistic man...Iowa isn't a top 100 team.

I hope you know that you just made the other guys point...There is not a good basketball team on that list. GA is the best argument and even they are struggling BUT they actually have good classes to looks forward to.

I don't mean to offend but you just described the motto of a losing team. Everything you just listed was a quality of the Lick era and I, personally, am ready to move forward from that.

Dean Oliver was a fairly high ranked recruit, as was Jeff Horner (who committed as a freshman).

Iowa does not have a Brunner or Bowen on the team. Sorry. Great statistical comparisions, though.

And, if you read what I posted, I said it just does not happen anymore (meaning, presently)

I would only be offended if you thought Iowa had winning records the last three years. Also, I am not sure if you really read what I have to say. We have the right staff in place and to add to that Iowa will have a good chance to make the NCAA tourney next year.

Freshmen Averages:

John Shurna avg. 7 pts and 3 rebounds.
Taylor Battle avg. 10 pts
McCamey avg. 8 pts
Lucas 10 pts
Draymond Green 3 pts. 3 reb.
Durrell Summers 4 pts. 2.5 reb.
JaJuan Johnson 5 pts. 3 reb.
Robbie Hummel 11 pts. 6 reb
E'Twaun Moore 13 pts. 4 reb
Jon Leuer 3 pts.

The point is ALL the best players in the Big 10 are NIGHT AND DAY better than they were as freshman. Did some average more than 5 pts. a game....Sure they did, but look how much better they are as upper classmen. Some of these guys you would have told me I'm friggin nuts if I tell you they will be All Big ten types when they are jr/sr.

It is a complete and total fabrication to say that the "good" players are awesome from day one like a Sullinger. The Sullingers of the world are the exception, not the rule.

Even the good, all Big Ten players develop over time, and get much, much better than they were as Freshman. Do you think Evan Turner was NBA ready as a freshman? Not averaging 8 pts a game he wasn't......

Will any Hawkeyes be that good as JR/SR? Not sure at this point. I don't see any reason that May can't be a guy who is close to that, and the same goes with Basabe.....I am NOT trying to say the Brommers of the world will do this. Yet if you have 2 borderline all big ten types, with solid players around them, that is a recipe for the NCAA tourney.

A lot of negativity towards Men's hoops. Fran inherited a total mess, at least give him a couple of years, there is nothing he can do about the last ten years of Hawkeye hoops but he can change the next ten! Go Hawks

It's definitely possible for guys to go from little production t a lot of production in their careers. I think we've seen it a bunch of times. It is absolutely pretty rare though.

I like this current staff and think that once they have had time to establish themselves on the recruiting front, they are going to start reeling in the recruits that we expect (and hardly ever get) around here.
Why? What have they done so far that leads you to believe that? The best recruit they have a commitment from (Ogelsby) fell into their lap. Siena is a long way from competing in the Big Ten my friend.

Could this situation be much the same as the Devin Coleman situation? I'm not saying Iowa pulled Katenda's offer like they did Coleman's, but maybe they have cooled on Katenda as they have evaluated him further. It's interesting in the Coleman case, because it seems as though everyone has backed away from him for the most part.
Perhaps their having trouble evaluating which players can and can't play at the Big Ten level. Why else would they be shying away from players like Coleman and Katenda, guys they had been recruiting for months?
