Iowa not in Final 3 for Katenda

Maybe we need an unbiased 3rd party here.

"Sitting out most of the summer’s AAU action Katenda saw some schools shy away and told NBE in August that he was still considering the three finalists mentioned about along with Iowa, Michigan, Siena and Boston College."

My take was that they have since started to focus on other players. It is December now, and he claimed he was considering Iowa in Aug. Furthermore, by all reports he is a finesse big and in my opinion we need a 'banger-type' big.

I agree on the banger. Although I did just watch a small clip on him. Good handle for a kid his size. I really think a PG is Iowa's #1 need. Cartwright just isn't that good

I can't find it now, but recently (within the past week) I read a posting somewhere from a hawk fan that went to watch one of his games and was extremely disappointed. I believe he showed athleticism during warm-ups and that was it.

I hope for a proven juco big and a pg.

Could this situation be much the same as the Devin Coleman situation? I'm not saying Iowa pulled Katenda's offer like they did Coleman's, but maybe they have cooled on Katenda as they have evaluated him further. It's interesting in the Coleman case, because it seems as though everyone has backed away from him for the most part.

If I was Fran this is what I would do. It is hard to go out and get a PG who is well balanced. Most of those guards go to Duke, Kentucky, etc and he is still new at Iowa. I would find a guard who can really penetrate. Who cares if he can't shoot. Iowa has shooters but in Big 10 play they will struggle to get good looks. For McCabe, May, and Gatens to be at their best they need a guard who can get to the middle of a defense and make a defender help out.

This is very true. Cartwright isn't bad, but he's more of a Michael Reeves than a B.J. Armstrong.

I'll admit I've only watched Cartwright 3 times. In the SIUE game, which he looked good (everyone did that game). And in the other 2 he has been awful. Scouting report is out on him, he has no left hand and can't hit a jumper.

I like Fran, but he may have to replace one of the current assistants with a proved recruiter if the 2011 recruiting class is a disappointment.

Really? Lets see, Iowa has signed a Top 150 kid in Oglesby and a very versatile SF/PF in Aaron White that will surprise people when his career is over.
Also, the staff has not been together for a year and you are calling for changes? Again, lets not forget that this Staff and recruiters were responsible for getting Basabe and Cartwright to campus.

Yeah, that calls for making a change...please:(

If he does, he would avoid one of the previous guy's big mistakes.

Watch how Michigan recruits with LaVall Jordan on staff and how many of the top Michigan kids they get to campus.
From a lot of things I read, it wasn't the assistants, it was the fact that the previous coach didn't follow a lot of their advice.
Carlton Brundidge almost went to Iowa, a kid out of Southfield, he is going to Michigan. There are multiple Jr/Sophs in Michigan that now initially have Michigan among their top schools, consequently some of them had Iowa listed until Jordan was let go.

It is getting a bit concerning to continually read these articles with the new staff in place. The staff has had enough time now to start showing results. This is 2010 now where almost all of the recruiting is done by the first signing day and unfortunately it is almost barren of difference makers in the spring.

Here's the thing though, Iowa only loses Cole and Brommer has proven he is a lot better, so when Cole leaves, no significant loss. Basabe/Marble/McCabe will be a year older and hopefully we avoid injuries, the roster looks good to me with the two signees Iowa has now.
Iowa does need to take a serious look at a PG, but Eli Carter and Cezar Gurerro are listing interest in Iowa and they are both Top 150 players.
I don't think a big guy is as big of a need as it was a couple months ago, or even a few days ago. This is the opportunity for Iowa to go "find" one and maybe it is an athletic project that can be redshirted. If only Cole is not on the roster next year, there is not an urgency to fill to the two open scholarships, one yeah, but not a "have" to fill both. If Iowa only gets Ogelsby and White, I am content. Does Iowa have needs, yes, do they have to fill all the open scholarships for 2011, if the right players are there.
My thought on a big man is this, you don't have to have the best big guys anyway, but if an elite big man comes along that wants to play for Iowa, can't pass on that. Guards will take you further than big guys, get big guys that rebound, run the floor, block shots and score when there is opportunity.
I guess getting a Top 150 player isn't showing results.

WOW CY, I am really surprised at your negative post.

So basically you watched him go 2-11 from the field against isu and that makes him awful.... You do know hes 2nd on the team with 10 pts/game, and 4.5 assists/game right? I don't think he's a worldbeater by any stretch of the imagination, but if were using your method for evaluating talent then diante garret is the worst bball player known to man.

He is 2nd on the team in stats on one of the worst teams in MAJOR college basketball.

Wow. stop the presses.

I have been to a pair of Iowa games this season. And, in my opinion, we are not talking about the best that Compton, CA has to offer.

While he can, in certain situations, break a defense down and get his shot, he is not a true penetrator. Nor would I consider a pure PG. Additionally, he needs to improve his 'lateral' defensive abilities.

I think, with time, he can improve on all the aforementioned facets.

However, for now, I am not going to go coocoo for cocoa puffs over the kid.

Not being negative at all man. I'm just commenting on a player. Go back and read the rest of the posts in the thread. I am commenting on Iowa having good shooters but how they need a guard that can get them good looks.

No I watched him go 4-19 against ISU and UNI, two of the better competition he has gone up against and after teams have gotten a chance to scout him. Watch what happens during Big 10 play, he won't be your #2 scorer, I can guarantee it.

DG isn't very good. Never said he was. He shot 5-24 against Iowa and still abused Cartwright though. So what does that tell you?

I completely agree that guards are far more important to a team than big guys. However, this team still has to make up a huge talent gap in the Big Ten. I would like to see how you feel about the newcomers on this team once the Big Ten season gets here. Iowa still hasn't played a top 25 team yet, so it is to early to judge how well they stack up against NCAA teams. Now Cartwright and Basabe are nice because their athleticism helps Iowa win games that they struggled to win last year, but once the Big Ten gets here everyone will be as or more athletic than they are. That is when we will see how bright the future can be with this team.

MAJOR teams worse than Iowa per Pomeroy:

CAL
Virginia
Stanford
LSU
Georgia Tech
Colorado
Oregon
Georgia
Miss State
Texas Tech
Oklahoma

Cartwright is the only player on the team that can create his own shot. Is he a great shooter? No but he is extremley valuable to this team.

When you say abused, I assume you're talking about the hand-checking? Like I said, Bryce isn't all-big material but he's been somewhat effective at running fran's style of offense (see end of 1st half vs uni when gets a layup at buzzer). I'm not gonna hold it against you, but you probably didn't watch Cully struggle to get the ball down the court last year against B10 teams - Bryce isnt going to have that problem. BC isn't a great shooter but hes quick and can create for himself and others. Its hard to appreciate the athleticism on this years team unless you watched the lack of athleticism on last years team.

I will say that I think that iowa might need Olasani more than Katenda.
Olasani is 6'10'' and more of a true big man.
Katenda is 6'8'' and seems to prefer to hang around the perimeter.
To me, with Melsahn,McCabe,Aaron White...we have the 6'8'' power forward type player covered. Mel is an inside power forward, White is more of a perimeter power forward type and Zach is right in between....fine.
So, I was a bit skeptical of adding another guy in that size range this year anyway.
At least Olasani is a true big,and could back up Brommer in the middle next year.
Now, I would not object to bringing in another guard, tho.
A good quick ballhandler of either pg or shooting guard would be welcome.
And taking the long view, if we carried over 1 or 2 schollys to 2012,it would not be a disaster either.
The 2012 class is loaded with Woodbury,Paige,Gesell,Staten,Thok...and that is just in Iowa/Neb.
If we took those 5 in 2012, it might be worth the wait as the foundation would be set for Fran to have a timely good team in 2013-14 with Mel,Zach and Devyn as seniors.
