Iowa not in Final 3 for Katenda

Really? Lets see, Iowa has signed a Top 150 kid in Oglesby and a very versatile SF/PF in Aaron White that will surprise people when his career is over.
Also, the staff has not been together for a year and you are calling for changes? Again, lets not forget that this Staff and recruiters were responsible for getting Basabe and Cartwright to campus.

Yeah, that calls for making a change...please:(
Please, is right. White is a guy who will surprise? Well, he is going to have to because nobody else in the Big Ten thinks he can play much, or they would have recruited this 'surprise' player.

Who invited Debbie Downer?

Im just glad you're not in charge of recruiting.

MAJOR teams worse than Iowa per Pomeroy:

CAL
Virginia
Stanford
LSU
Georgia Tech
Colorado
Oregon
Georgia
Miss State
Texas Tech
Oklahoma
Congratulations! Care to wager how many of those teams finish ahead of the Hawks at the end of the season? The schedule has been laughable! Pomeroy's system needs a few weeks of conference play before it means anything. But, you just keep deluding yourself.

Freshmen Averages:

John Shurna avg. 7 pts and 3 rebounds.
Taylor Battle avg. 10 pts
McCamey avg. 8 pts
Lucas 10 pts
Draymond Green 3 pts. 3 reb.
Durrell Summers 4 pts. 2.5 reb.
JaJuan Johnson 5 pts. 3 reb.
Robbie Hummel 11 pts. 6 reb
E'Twaun Moore 13 pts. 4 reb
Jon Leuer 3 pts.

The point is ALL the best players in the Big 10 are NIGHT AND DAY better than they were as freshman. Did some average more than 5 pts. a game....Sure they did, but look how much better they are as upper classmen. Some of these guys you would have told me I'm friggin nuts if I tell you they will be All Big ten types when they are jr/sr.

Hold on, respectfully, you're wrong. On that list only Green is a surprise. The rest were high level recruits that were expected to develope into successful Big Ten players.
The point is you have to recruit at a higher level than Iowa presently is. Not just hope for surprise careers or even maxed out careers because that doesn't happen often enough to succeed in this conference. I know you know this as it should be an obvious concept.

Yep and it is quite different for those players seeing as they were 4 star guys coming into teams that were already good and had 4 star guys. They had to wait their turn so to speak.

Iowa is different. There is plenty of time available and if you are good you will show it right away.

There are only 2 players on Iowas team that I think can get better every year and that is Basabe and May. I said when Gatens was a freshmen that he was really good but he had already hit his ceiling. I am saying the same thing about McCabe now.

Iowa isn't going to make it back to the NCAA's with 1 fringe top 150 guy a year and a couple other top 300 guys. The other teams in the league simply are bringing in more talent than that. Recruiting has to get better.

I really wasn't trying to make a point about if they were highly rated recruits or not. Even highly recruited guys have to find their way their freshman year. Many struggle, and they don't look good. I also pointed out May and Basabe as guys that could reach a all big ten 1st/2nd/3rd team type of production, just as you say. I'm not saying the Brommers/McCabes are these types of players, or that any player can just be those types of guys.....I think some of you missed my point, or I was unclear.

I agree on Gatens hitting his ceiling, however, I totally disagree about McCabe. He will get better and better. He can shoot it from deep and he is a rugged type inside. Also you left out Marble. As soon as he grows into his frame more he is going to be a legit star. He can shoot it from deep, finish with either hand and has pretty good handles. Not to mention his length, he will be a matchup nightmare.

Oops, you are right I did forget Marble. He will get better and better. Don't think he will ever be a 'star' but he will help Iowa win games.

As for McCabe, let's just agree to disagree. I think he struggles in conference play. He is a catch and shoot player that needs others around him to be good in order for him to be successful

Evidently the info on Katenda is dated and according to other boards Iowa is in the mix as of this week, along with the other three schools listed.

As I said, I think Olasani would be very useful to help us in the paint as Cole is graduating this year.

I know it is hard to keep our heads up right now,Hawk fans, but we all knew this year, and probably next year, would be tough, did we not?
I still think next year presents an opportunity for a more veteran Iowa team to be middle of the pack in the league and make a tourny of some stripe, which would be progress. The top 15 players in the league this year will be gone next year, which could allow for a more experienced team like Iowa to steal some wins at home vs top rated frosh players on the road in the league for the first time.

Hang in,hawk fans....trust fran.

If I could pick players from Iowa for my team (ISU), disregarding current needs, it would be....

1) Basabe
2) Marble
3) May - I like his athleticism but I'm still not sold on him as a bball player...but he will develop.

I'm not a fan of McCabe, in the very least, but that may be a personal thing.

Wow, I'm surprised by the lack of love for McCabe. Kid is a freshman and has darn good skills. I think by his junior year he will be a very good complimentary player. I agree he will struggle with conference play as I think he will be relegated to the perimeter, but as he gets older and stronger I can see him being a factor down low as well.

I think that is all depended on the surrounding talent. He really needs a good PG to make him a better player. I don't see him ever doing damage down low in the Big 10 but the kid has a nice shot and could do some damage down the road if Fran brings in some quality guard help or Marble really develops

I look at McCabe in ISU's system and don't see him as much of a factor. I think he's a better Lick type than a Fran type.

I agree... I had said since day one that Matt Gatens is a GREAT complimentry player on a good team.

I think McCabe is a very good complimentry player with a tad more upside than Matt Gatens due to his 6'7 height. I really like McCabe as a complimentry player who still has some growth. I think he improves his game by 1. adding strenght and 2. adding ball handling so if he pulls a 4 away from the basket he can dribble drive around him.

However Iowa's issue since Lick took over is they have had no one who could consistently break down defenders. Cartwright is by FAR the best player on the team at doing this, but if Iowa could get a better guard than Cartwright they would be in a great spot. Iowa has good pieces but they have absolutely no GREAT player.

Iowa desperately needs a playmaker to take a big step forward. I don't think Cully is the playmaker Iowa needs and Cartwright is ok but mainly looks good because it has been years since anyone has seen a legit playmaker on Iowa.

Untill Iowa gets a stud lead guard they will struggle against Big 10 teams.

Agreed. You hit the nail on the head with the Top 15 players going to be gone. Yes there is still talent, but I like the fact that Iowa will have a lot of experience back for next season and if a freshman is a starter it will be because they truly deserve to be in the lineup. Basabe would be a starter even if the defections did not happen. Don't judge Payne on what you saw this season, he was not healthy from game one, he will be a difference maker when it is all said and done, this style fits him very well.
I do think Iowa needs a big guy, but they still need another PG so Marble can play his natural SG and blossom.
The one thing that you cannot take out of the equation is this: coaching. This staff can coach players up and it has shown already. I will use Brommer here, he looks like a viable player, not to say he is going to be an All-Big Ten performer, but a solid player that is becomming more reliable with the confidence the coaching staff has enstilled in him.

Please, is right. White is a guy who will surprise? Well, he is going to have to because nobody else in the Big Ten thinks he can play much, or they would have recruited this 'surprise' player.

All the teams recruiting him have been NCAA tournament teams and three of them were A-10 teams, who can play. The only team that hasn't made the tournament that was recruiting him was Northwestern, but I forget, are they are in the Big Ten?

SIAP here, but Katenda hasn't cut Iowa from his list. The blogger who reported it got it wrong. I will personally be writing him to ask that he make a public correction because his claim just isn't accurate.

I hope you are joking. I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Merry Christmas.
