Iowa Football Investigation Discussion

Well that's a pretty dismal representation of minority hires. That needs to be addressed and it's not all that suprising.
However to be fair I want to school at Iowa and have been a fan for 35 years. I'd say about 99% of the people i know that are interested in Iowa football with any real seriousness are white. So I can see them wanting those jobs.

However even with that - they need to do a better job of having a diverse staff. Especially when you are trying to recruit.

When did the team physician graduate HS. He shouldn't use his senior picture.

Are young doctors easier to bully?

KF is akin to a Confederate monument. Pls read. For healing we need to move on. The zoo at games that Iowa plays will be a huge distraction for years and hurt recruiting aside from the fact it the right thing to do. Here is the lady that wrote the below.

Equating Kirk Ferentz with statues extolling the virtues of the confederacy. That's a huge stretch. KF is likely guilty of institutional racism, due to failing to monitor racist remarks by an important staff member and tolerating them when he knew about them. The confederate monuments were in large part political statements about who was in control of southern politics at the time they were put up in the first half of the 20th century. They weren't just memorials, they were political statements about whose legacy in the south was legitimate and where things stood in the social pecking order. Not only were they racist, they made it clear that the views of northerners and the descendants of scallywag's in the south were not welcome.

That's a bit of load to hang on KF. Are you going to hang the civil war on everyone in a position of power who comes short on keeping his institution free of bigotry and bias. Are they unredeemable? Do we just defenestrate anyone in a position of power who comes up short and be done with them.

Note: By the way, my fathers side is all central Missouri Germans, southerners who fought for the north. Had it not been for the solidly German speaking area between St. Louis and and Jefferson City (and the connecting railroad between the two) the state would likely have gone to the confederacy.

In my view those statues have been nothing but trouble.

Missouri was one of the worst places to be in the Civil War. The Palmyra executions were terrible. In Lee county Iowa the war spilled across the border. There was also a move to bring the war to Sigourney that didn't materialize.

About KF, it is the same as his presence will be a negative reminder. Time to move on.

Missouri was in a tough spot because the Deep South excised a whole bunch of the extreme fanatics and sent them to Missouri decades prior to the Civil War. Missouri had a big influx of Germans that tempered things, but politically the state was dominated by guys who were too extreme for Georgia and the Carolinas. Think about that. It ain't an accident that pretty much everyone who lives adjacent to Missouri thinks the state is full of extremist assholes. I don't know of another state that is so hated by its neighbors beyond good-hearted regionalized ribbing (e.g., rivalry between Boston and NY). You never hear someone from Georgia saying shit like "man, South Carolina sure sucks" or "Tennessee is full of asswipes." But you'd be hard pressed to find people from Kansas, Iowa and Illinois who would ever say anything nice about Missourrah.

Impossible, insitutional racism can only be perpetuated by the institution. Virtuous liberals looked at their navels, concluded that none of them were racist, but needed a way to explain observations, so it was the institution itself that was racist, not any individual. Kirk will likely be absolved of "racism" but deemed guilty of "racial ignorance."

I live in a surrounding state and know Missouri quite well. There is some truth to what you are saying and it takes a long time for change. That said, I hear more negative comments about Mo from Iowa than any other state . I think there is a culture in Iowa that is insecure about being very average so the talk down others. My wife notices it when she is in Iowa with me.

Put another way, Missouri and seem secure with who they are. Iowans don't as much.

There are parts of Iowa 5hat are quite redneck and Warrrrshington drive me nuts

Which may well happen, although it may not happen right away. I would hope that Brian would search for work elsewhere and get out from under the cloud. I doubt if they run from this mess right off. The wheels might start turning in the background though. Who knows, it might ultimately be Kirk that initiates the change of guard.

Yea, those counties closest to Missouri.

Kansas hates Missouri. Illinois hates Missouri. I am with you on "Warrrrshington." Every self respecting Iowan knows that there is no "a" in "Wershington."

You are missing some things about Missouri in your talk. Missouri had 2 state governments during the civil war. So the state was very divided. It is still divided today. The rural people hate St. Louis. Speaking that us the most racially divided city in the nation. I remember looking back at mayoral races and if a black candidate ran against a white, the entire north side of the city voted for the black and the entire south side voted for the white. And then the small corridor in the middle was the swing. Still pretty much that way today. St Charles county exploded because of white flight.

kansas and Missouri had a border war back in the day. that is one reason the Kansas/Missouri basketball game was such a rivalry. Blood spilled on both sides of the border. Missourians hate Kansans as much as they hate Missourians.

Illinois is hole to East St louis, which is where the extreme slums of St Louis are. Illinois hates Missouri for that.

Really? That's about as biased as the Iowa situation. When I lived in MN - they hated Iowa, when I lived in Ohio - they hated MI. I'm from Iowa and all I heard was I hate Illinois & Nebraska. Now I live in MO - they hate Kansas, Ark. and Illinois. So I think you're being a bit extreme yourself - but no surprise there. LOL But they all flock to Missouri to play and party at the lake... hhhmmm

Look, there is provincialism everywhere on Earth. People hate on their neighbors the most. Auburn-Bama, Michigan-OSU, Iowa-ISU, Eagle Grove-Humboldt, Japan-Korea. I could go on all day. But when push comes to shove, they usually respect each other in most cases, particularly as compared to "outsiders." Like I'm a Bama fan and I'm not ever going to cheer for Auburn, but I respect them for being able to win a title in our shadow. The same really doesn't hold with Mizzou. The surrounding states don't respect them because the place is full of raging assholes. Missouri is the Florida of the Midwest. It really doesn't fit in.

I mean when you have a state like Iowa formed and the first case the supreme court gets is about sending a slave back to Missouri, you don't exactly endear yourself with the new neighbors.

Could be done this week. More likely next week. UI wants it done by end of July. We'll see.

Any bets on which we see first? Investigation of claims of racism in Iowa football, or the Durham report on the investigation into the FBI’s involvement in starting the Trump-Russia investigation?

Tie-breaker: which will have less impact?

Whatever you want to believe... lol Was raised and lived in Iowa for 42 years... trust me there are plenty of jerks there too. Just a smaller pool to pick from.

Washed up Walk-Ons had another great podcast. Loved how they’ve brought three sides of the Iowa situation. Their perspective, the racial issue and now Tyler Goodson’s dad has weighed in... I’m tired of the lazy journalism where it’s all about the “shock” value vs. truth of where both sides fit.

So I gather from your post that pretty much everybody hates Missouri?

Can you not really see past certain things? Are things only black and white?

I know you live in Missouri. Rural areas don't hate St. Louis. Some areas prefer KC. St Louis itself has areas equal to E St L. I live in Illinois. Illinoisians don't have Missouri for E St. Louis. They don't give it much of a thought. Chicago is a much bigger problem for IL. Missourians hate Kansan's? Seriously? Maybe 120 years ago.

Afton is an interesting place where former Yugoslavians who used to kill each other live in peace.

St Louis was never going to fall to the Confederacy. I believe MO had the 2nd most civil war battles after TN. Southern Iowa had a lot of confederate sympathies. A lot of Iowan's immigrated from VA to TN to Iowa.

I don't know of any Missouri politicians remotely similar to Iowa's King. Harold Volkmer was a DixieCrat, but did champion minority rights.

The I 70 World Series was quite a divide, I'll grant that.

If my memory is correct, the Iowa 1st Regiment in their final battle wore guard gray and a number of confederates wore blues stolen from St Louis.
