Iowa Extends Contract of Fran McCaffery

I agree we are in a much better spot. But, it does seem like we do overpay for our coaches at Iowa (football, basketball) if you are going by major accomplishments. Competitive wise and stability wise...maybe we are paying for that and the fear of the unknown more so than a lot of top end success.
That I wouldn't argue. Iowa is not paying top dollar for any of their coaches right now. Pretty much all of them are performing above their pay grade, which as a business, is the ultimate goal.

You are not good at negotiating, there for, you'd be a great boss to have. You'd starve me out to where I would look for different work and you'd over pay me for 1 big deal rather than rewarding me for showing I can make lots of deals over a longevity of time. That's someone who doesn't really get it, especially at a school like Iowa where consistency and longevity is important and the school's most successful recipe for having excellent athletics.

Sure one off games happen and upsets happen. But, again, in year 11 (and 35 years overall) if Fran can get beat a 15 seed with his best team ever....with the player of the year....when is it ever going to happen with him?

I'm sure as shit as an AD not giving Fran 4 more years losing to 15 seed with his best team. At most 2 years for recruiting purposes and making the tournament (my threshold) 3 out of every 4 years.....which he has accomplished.

I will pay top dollar for top end results.
You'll be Nebraska football in like 5 years. Have fun

Well, that is your opinion. But, I'm not overpaying for a car that has very little bells and whistles and is a 10 minute car and not a 10 second one.

No, you want to wait until that car doubles in price and then buy it. I get it.
If that is what the market demands...at least I know I would be most likely getting a quality product, then overpaying for a piece of shit that does not work before going over all the details.

Iowa knows who Fran is. They've been riding in this car for a while now. They didn't over pay, I mean, I guess if his deal puts him in the top 2 in the B1G salary wise, maybe, but he's not gonna be that. They likely got him while he was going to be the cheapest he could be. The only way they didn't is if he somehow loses to Grand Canyon. That's the only scenario that Iowa would have an upper hand in negotiating. I don't think if you're Iowa and you're looking to be a shrewd negotiator like you think you are that you can afford that gamble.

That 4 year deal is overpaying if he does not make the Elite 8. Sweet 16 is borderline. IMHO

I think it becomes a steal for Barta....and something he gets very, very lucky with if they make the Final 4 or better.

2 year extension to me seems reasonable for a first weekend exit for recruiting purposes and the fact he had another Iowa team tourney bound.

Gary is either going to make out very well, or look like a dolt yet again. Bottom line, high risk/high reward early contract.

What deals has Gary looked like a dolt on? He got the better of the last KF and Fran deal by a wide margin. He's underpaid for Iowa's 2 biggest revenue sports and they print money. He's a PR dipshit and has had all kinds of brushes looking dumb, I think Iowa could have fired him at least a half dozen times ....but not really when it comes to $$$ and contracts. Iowa is getting amazing ROI on their 2 main coaching contracts...and then you look at women's hoops, wrestling, baseball and then you're like, wow, this guy's pretty good at contracts.

Basically, Barta is betting this team/Fran is going to do very well in the tournament by handing out this sweetened contract in the blind.

Hopefully it works out and continue to prove the doubters somewhat wrong (like me).

I guess, for me, I just see this 4 year extension (added to 3 makes 7 years) without having a deep run yet (under the most favorable conditions Fran has ever had and having the player of the year land in his lap), and knowing Fran's overall track record, to me that seems risky. We are locked in for a quite awhile with him.

I would rather pay more if it meant it took more to learn about the product I was buying and it is a very good/great product than pay still a decent amount for something, but not know all that details about that said product and it turns out to be defective.

I want to see what Fran can do with a team in the NCAA tournament like he has now. Can he in the role of the favorite play up to the expectation of a 2 seed? Can he do it against quality teams? Again, I think Iowa did not get as favorable a draw as other 2 seeds. But, if he makes a big run, he will have more than earned it.

I would even be willing to give him more than 4 years for a Final Four or better.

I want Fran to succeed. But, I also want him to earn it to. And right now, without the advantage of hindsight, I think we are adding to many years on to the contract before seeing if he can make a long run or not.

Another thing to chew on......Fran can lose tomorrow evening and he has a 4 year extension deal inked. He could sit on his behind and watch his team falls apart (not saying he is doing this of course), and he has 4 more years of 7 figure salary.

If I'm Fran, I'm like, shit this Gary Barta is fantastic to work for. I was not leaving anyway, but shit they are giving me everything and the kitchen sink.

We've gone in circles long enough, we'll just have to disagree, I just don't think you've given much thought of how the real world works in coaching contracts. 4 years is the standard, you re-sign guys that get down lower than 3. Just because you don't like Fran doesn't mean there are other people who don't. Iowa wants Fran, and if you want him, you sign him now and not after.

That might be how it works if you give that Wal-mart clerk a raise, Iowa dictated the terms here and had the upper hand. It probably wouldn't of after the season is over. Again, if you're ever hiring, let me know.

I would say I'm lukewarm to Fran. He rebuilt the program and is having NCAA tournament appearances. But, what is missing is the signature achievement. I hope when it is all said and done, that there is no question about his contract length in hindsight. Whether that be a long run or a short exit.

Gary's 4 years will be a steal if he gets them Final Four bound or better. Elite 8 is right on the mark. Anything less and Fran is laughing to the bank. I know I would be.

LOL, you don't even know the amount of the deal so you literally have no idea what you are talking about. Literally.

Ye
We are going off of what we know right.....and 4 years has been released to the public.
Yeah, so a standard CBB coaching extension has been placed on the best coach we’ve had in 20 years. Not sure this is gonna have that Lucy with a Football moment you are obviously craving.

Not sure why you say that.....it has been far to long since Iowa has been passed the first weekend. I will be on cloud 9 with a long run.
