I was finally able to put a finger on a thought related to this team

They made shots because Iowa tries to trap, fails and in doin so leaves guys wide open all game.

Actually, I think Iowa covered them up pretty well on most of the 3-point shots. Give Northwestern credit.

I thought NW also covered Iowa's 3-point shots pretty well.

The biggest issue I continue to see is the big guys establishing a post position and nobody feeding them the ball. In tonight's game after no post feeds, the bigs (Basabee, Woodbury & Gabe) get a pass outside the paint and settle for a 15' jump shot. The problem is there are no rebounders under the hoop when they are 15' out. Entry passes into the post can lead to those beautiful little hooks Woodbury and Gabe made earlier in the season. Olaseni has done nearly nothing in the past 10 games. Entry passes can also lead to the kick outs for 3's. Swinging the ball along the arc with posts coming out top to screen is easy to defend as you just lay off the guards. All the interviews and games I've watched Marble seems to be humble. He doesn't get up or down (no animation) wether he is playing well or poorly.......at least we can't blame the refs for poor officiating and we shot lights out from the FT line. I think we just need some vocal floor leadership with an inside emphasis on offense (and play man D).

I think there is a lot of overanalyzing going on with this team. The problem as I see it is that there is a gross overstatement of the talent level on the roster, aided in part by the team playing a bit above its talent earlier in the year. No amount of toughness or grit is going to overcome your point guard, three point specialist and center going 0 for 18 from the floor. Iowa has zero, zip, zilch consistent shooters. Worse yet, it only has two players (Marble and Oglesby) that can even be considered streak shooters (Utoff's hot shooting night notwithstanding). Add on to that that there is only one player one player on the entire roster that can actually break an opponent down off the dribble. It's amazing to me they won 20 games with this group.

It all goes back to hitting shots.

I'll add that the starting lineup should have been shaken up a long time ago. It's no secret the start of the second half of each of the last 8 games has been brutal. Woodbury should be coming off the bench - should have happened during that stretch where Oleseani was clearly outplaying him.

'Yes there is too much overanalyzing going on with this team'. I stopped reading after that. We just suck.

I think we just need to win a game so people will shut the f*ck up on this board and quit saying stupid $hit

Marble jumped all over Oglesby after NW hit a corner three-pointer at one second on the shot clock late in the second half. Oglesby was talking back, looked like an argument. Then Oglesby was removed and seemed to be whining on the bench. Don't like to see that, but I do see it happen with other teams, so maybe it's just another way of 'communicating.'

Therein lies the chemistry problem among others.....

When you get outrebounded by one of the worst rebounding teams in the BIG, how do you expect to get those fastbreaks? Did Collins coach a great game, maybe. But Fran coached an equally crappy game. Same story all year. Did the coach at Illinois, Indiana, etc., etc., coach great games too or was it that Iowa just aint that good. I'll take the latter for $1000 Alex.

Actually our rebounding was the highlight of the game. We out-rebounded them: 37 -29, 19 - 5 offensive rebounds, at least according to the Hawk Central Box Score.....

The only highlight if you can really call it that.....

The Stats are painful.....

Clemmons left his shoes in the lane on that drive! How can you possibly sit for the entire game and expect to lock down a guy that has been playing all game? He about rolled both ankles and then took a chair to watch...

I listened to the game (my grandson's birth is definitely more important than an Iowa game), so I didn't actually see it. But... the stats say that Iowa won the rebounding battle 37-29. In fact, we made more free throws than NW took, had more rebounds, more blocks, more steals, less fouls and less turnovers. What struck me was our inability to hit shots. Looking at the stats we were 20-62 from the field for the game. You aren't going to win many games shooting that poorly.

The final total shows Iowa won the rebounding battle, but in the first half they were getting killed on the glass and Iowa did not take the lead in rebounds until late in the 2nd half. This was when NW got the lead and they started taking Iowa's transition game away by retreating immediately after a missed shot. There were many times NW would miss a shot, Iowa would go up for the rebound and by the time they came down with it not a single NW player was in site as they had all run back to the other side to set up their defense.

Rebounding is not what I would complain about. We ended up with 19 offensive rebounds to their 24 defensive rebounds. We got multiple looks on a lot of those late possessions and just missed all of them.

They don't play for one another...or rather, they have stopped playing for one another. The chemistry they once had is all gone.

I am not saying they don't like each other, but they just don't seem to go out of their way all that much for each other, like close teams do, like last year's Iowa team did.

I am guessing White is tired of how few touches he gets in scoring position where he isn't forced to dribble drive, which is hard for him because people don't respect his jump shot.

Maybe I am wrong...perhaps I am grasping at straws, too...but that's what it looked like from the couch.

Yes you are grasping at straws. For all your criticism of other people's "explanations" of why this team has fallen apart, it is crazy that you think you are going to know how a bunch of college students feel about one another based upon a basketball game. Saying they have stopped playing for one another is basically saying they have given up trying to win and throwing the season.

Sorry Jon this is one of your dumber posts.

How can you watch that game and say that team honestly loves to play with each other. Jesus. It doesn't take a genius to realize that team doesn't like each other. They don't care. They play with no emotion at all. No celebrations or high fives. No communication. Just stop. You are blind to say the least.

Reading most of this thread - what is clear is that it is not just one thing wrong with this team. Everybody is right. And fixing one thing won't do it now. There are too many holes in the dam and Iowa is out of fingers.

I think Jon hit the nail on the head. I started focusing on the players' faces and emotions and something happened ... or something developed because this team no longer looks like it is having fun; no emotion; no high fives... I paused and watched when Uthoff hit the short jumper in the lane at the end of the game and was fouled ... I watched Aaron White's face... Absolutely no emotion ... That is a time when the team should have been pepping each other up. And then during a timeout toward the end I just watched the faces of the players ... White looked disinterested ... Clemmons (while not in the game at the time) was completely in the back and not even paying attention to Fran.

Fran lost this team somewhere along the line. The talent did not change. The mental makeup of the team has changed - and it's obvious on the court. In my 30+ years of being a fan I have never watched a team spiral so far down after showing such promise. We went from a Top 15 team to about a No. 50 team in a span of three weeks. No injuries on the court. Same players in the lineup ... This team simply lost its will to win. We have had teams with less talent but they played hard. This team is not playing hard. The lapse on defense is the most noticeable change. To top the whole night off last night, Northwestern played well but they did not play THAT well. We played that poorly.

If I was in that room on Selection Sunday ... this Iowa team would not be on my list of tourney teams. No way.

Or all of us are wrong. One thing is for certain is there are some underlying issues with this team.

With all those offensive rebounds, it seems that Woodbury, Basabe, and Olaseni would have combined for a lot more than 2 of 11 FGs.

Maybe.

To be honest, i've nevfer seen a team play so tight in my life. The closer this team gets to its first NCAA birth in what seems like ages, the tighter/more robotic this team looks. I seriously think it comes down to their inability to handle the pressure.

I've voiced my thoughts on Marble and where the team will be next year. I don't believe this team deserves a NCAA birth at this point, based on the fact there not even a shadow of what they were earlier in the season. I know that the last 10 games have just as much arre weighed equally with the first 10 and all games are equal, but the fact is that this isn't a team that hit a rough patch. This is a team that hit a mack truck and is not the same team that America fell in love with early in the season.

At this point all I can hope for is that they get that tourny invite. Get the monkey off their backs. And make babysteps to right the ship. IMO this is a perfect example of pressure destroying a mentally weak team.

All that said they're still competitive and who knows, maybe they can return to form if they're able to get the invite and can put the pressure of just making the tourny behind them. Fact is, making the tournament and getting that invite may be the only medicine that can help them.
