Winning 4 cupcake non con games, and having a losing record of 4-5 in conference play in a very weak division is hardly what I would call a very good season. Several teams hung a bunch of points on Nebraska, the OSU game was simply a fluke, but yes we did gut one out against ISU. Gonna miss Jewell, Wadley, and the other seniors for sure, as they were great Hawkeyes. Feel bad for Akrum as we have a staff that cannot figure out how to use talented players. We won't have a threat like him for some time on offense.
4 "Cupcakes":
Wyoming- 8-5, MWC, Won Bowl Game
Iowa State- 7-5, Big 12, Upset top ten OU and TCU, Bowl Game Pending against #20 Memphis
North Texas- 9-5, C-USA Runner-Up, Top 20 Offense Nationally
Boston College- 7-5, 5-1 down the stretch with wins over the reigning Heisman Winner and a walloping of FSU. Not great, but no "cupcake" either.
4-5 in a "Weak" Division:
First of all, it's actually 3-3 in said division. Losses are from
#20 Northwestern- 7 pt OT loss, 9-3 with a win over MSU, playing for win 10 in a bowl game they are favored in.
#6 Wisconsin- Ass-kicking, no way around it, but possibly the best Wiscy team in a very long time.
Purdue- Terrible loss, again, no way around it, but still won their bowl game over a decent Arizona team. Likely trending up.
Other two conference losses come from
#18 Michigan State- 7 pt loss, 10-3 team with wins over Penn State and taking #21 Wazzu to the woodshed.
#9 Penn State- 2 pt last-second loss, 10-2 team with win over Northwestern, playing for win 11 against #12 Washington.
I'm not gonna argue it was a great or even good season, but you're blinded by Ferentz-hate if you think it was a bad one. If you're gonna spout stuff like that, you might wanna do your homework. And no, those cupcakes aren't weak teams just because they are perceived as ones by you, as their records suggest otherwise.
