Frans Buyout

What really pisses me off is that Patrick signing a letter of intent basically negates the need for a buyout. Fran isn't going to accept another coaching gig while his son is in the program. So the buyout is just completely stupid and unnecessary. With Patrick in the program, a buyout can only hurt the university, it can't help it in any way.

The fact that Iowa gets a $51m B1G check for football gives latitude to financial squandering is idiocy.
What business (and UI athletics is big business) would permit his CFO to piss away his profits?
The board might let one go, two gaffes would be like “Gary, you’re personal effects are in the box, Sven here will escort you to the parking lot.”

Couple things...

-Patrick won't sign his NLI until November of this year.

-Asking Fran about the deal after the Nebraska game isn't that big of a deal, IMO. Barta needs to explain why he feels it's good business.

I’m guessing Scott D heard scuttlebutt about a contract extension and asked about it. Didn’t get an answer. Filed the FOIA.

This isn’t malfeasance on the media.

Barta has some ‘splaining to do.

But my guess is that with how poorly Iowa was playing back then the backlash against this extension would be huge and beta were hedged that Thai team would turn things around compete for a tournament bid.

Wah- waaahhhh

The only thing I can think of as to why Barta is still here, is that he is a master fund raiser. He must bring in hundreds of millions a year. There is no other reason I can think that he is still out AD.

I think I read somewhere Iowa is middle-of-the-pack in revenue generated by the athletic department. Kind of like Hawkeye sports in general, middle of the pack.

This is just in football and the most recent I can find.

FOOTBALL REVENUE

1. Michigan $97,149,706

2. Ohio State $86,668,248

3. Penn State $75,527,152

4. Wisconsin $71,220,684

5. Michigan State $69,579,206

6. Nebraska $65,741,822

7. Iowa $52,498,092

8. Minnesota $49,188,752

9. Northwestern $36,212,907*

10. Indiana $35,520,657

11. Illinois $32,910,979

12. Maryland $30,071,434

13. Rutgers $28,657,722

14. Purdue $18,747,410

So is the next question did Patrick know about dads large buyout when he tweeted back at that guy? I could see that going either way. As a teenager I didn't have a clue what my old man was making and I wasn't asking. I lean towards him not knowing something like that but ya just never know I suppose. Every family is different.

I don’t frown on the media in this instance. How would they know to look for something like this when this is completely unprecedented? This is unheard of. Actually the only reason the information probably got requested in the first place was because of how bad this season has been going and they wanted to see what it would cost to fire Fran. Then they stumbled upon this craziness.
True and Rob said that it'd been requested awhile back which I didn't realize at the time I wrote that. The University is able to drag their feet for whatever length of time it is allowed under the law I suppose when something of public record is asked for. I bet they were cussing up a storm when they had to finally go through with that this morning..
