Ferentz' postgame quote on CJ

You can call it whatever you like, but our head coach completely snubbed a player on his team, live on the radio. That is inexcusable. You certainly can't deny it didn't happen. So, why do you think our head coach snubbed a player? What kind of strategy is that? How does this benefit the team or that player? It doesn't matter how many times afterwards the head coach did compliment the player, he opened the can of worms. It was a simple, benign, softball question and he swung and missed on it.

It wasn't "afterwards". The compliments for CJ were right after the game. When trashing someone you might want to get your facts straight.

"You are what your record says you are" - Bill Parcells

That's all I'm saying. That, and my aunt doesn't have balls. Yeah, I know... that was kind of stupid. :)

No worries ATL. I do agree with Bill Parcels quote. But, too often we relate that to the players and don't include the coaching, as well. We are a 3-1 team because KF had them "prepared" to play the way they did and an unnecessary lost was a risk and it happened. To me, KF routinely does not have his teams prepared to be 4-0, even with the FCS and MAC teams he schedules.

Okay, 23, you posted links to the post game interview with the media. The comment I heard came right after the game on Dolph's and Eddie P's post-game radio show. So, you tell me, which happened first? And it really doesn't even matter. KF snubbed one of his players to a live audience and that shouldn't have happened either before or after the interview you are referring to. Certainly you agree that KF should not have snubbed one of his own players, right?

KF's first comment about CJ's performance in Dolph and Eddie's post-game radio broadcast interview was as stated. Please read your own comment again before commenting further.

Thanks for the assist, DJ. I was almost certain but not fully. Anyway, it would have been nice to see the response.

That's a matter of opinion. To me that was just a comment based in fact. It was pretty obvious to everybody that CJ played great, wasn't it? The burden of proof is on the accuser so why don't you post the transcripts from all his post-game interviews, instead of taking one sentence from one interview with no context.

Both were roughly right after the game. You guys make it sound like he consulted with PR people just to say "CJ played great". It was obvious to everyone.

hwk, the question wasn't "how did CJ look in practice on Thursday" it was a question asking to allow KF to praise CJ. That isn't a matter of opinion.

This.
We all are aware of the preparedness factor. He even used to admit that he wasn't very good at preparedness leading up to bowl games.

I didn't hear the comment, so I'm totally out of context.
I can definitely see how some might consider it a dig at fans? A dig at CJ? Self serving? Passive Aggressive?

I can also see how it could merely have been a general KF awkwardness. Sure, maybe rooted in honesty or all the above as well too. He has always seemed awkward to me on Dolph's show. Or just about any other time I've seen him where he takes 'questions'. Remember "Oh crap."? Honest, maybe and a genuine 'emotion'. But really awkward. It would have been refreshing to hear "Oh ______[expletive deleted]". I would have even accepted "Nuts!" as you can always attribute that to the Battle of the Bulge. But, "Oh crap"? I found that awkward. Could be just me, I suppose.

As a coach there are things said to the media and things said behind closed doors to the team. This is comment that generally stays behind closed doors. That said, and in no way am I defending KF, but what if the comment wasn't made as a shot at CJ or directly at the fans. What if deep down KF sees the talent level and the potential, but CJ doesn't carry it with him onto the practice field on a daily basis. Maybe just maybe, KF wasn't trying to throw him under the bus but motivate him to step up and be "that guy" day in and day out to win the position.

kicker, I could agree with the what you said. But KF could have said "he didn't play well in practice but he sure did during the game." But he didn't. In fact, what he did say is "I am glad he played better than he did in practice on Thursday. I'll leave it at that." KF knew exactly what he was NOT saying.

Fans want to know why the coaches make personnel choices that they do.
Coaches don't say why.
Fans complain.

I just don't get it.

And the last part of his comment, "I'll leave it at that", tells me he knew his initial comment was not what Dolph, Eddie, or their radio audience was expecting to hear. I'm sure the comment KF made was not a slip, he meant what he said but he had good enough sense to know that no one wanted to hear anymore about practice performance, this was a time to celebrate the game performance.

As I said on a much earlier post, I hope he apologized to CJ and will be more circumspect with his critical remarks in public. That comment, if said at all, should have been addressed the day of the poor practice to CJ alone. But like anyone that makes a mistake, they generally know it as soon as it happens so I don't expect it will be repeated.

I'm ready to drop it and move on, I hope KF has too and is open to seeing CJ in a different light.

Much ado about nothing. Mountain out of a mole hill. If we were at practice, saw what he saw, knew what he knew, we might say the same thing.

For sanity sake, quit second guessing every breath KF takes.

What if we take it from a different angle? What if CJ saw that no matter what he did or how ineffective Jake was at running the offense, that KF wasn't really going to give him a shot. What if teammates had been telling him he should be starting? What if he shined in his game appearance and wasn't given another shot?

Could it it be he took all that to practice and that influenced his poor performance?

We'll never know with KF, he rarely explains his decision-making.

But one thing we can observe - of the three QB's that were/are practicing with Iowa (JR, CJB, AND the transfer Sokul), who looks to be playing the best in games? Would you say it was JR? I wouldn't so maybe KF's practice criteria needs a bit of a review because it could be that he's missing something...

KF doesn't publicly criticize players. Except CJB. Despite playing about five halves of football, CJB gets criticized to the media three times. What's up with that?

So it's safe to assume you would have benched Allen Iverson. Sound advice.

You're probably right. My college BB coach was Buzz Levick. He benched an all-District, honorable mention All American because he loafed in practice... AFTER he told him how much he loafed in practice. Guess what? The next week the guy made every hustle play in practice and got his starting job back. If you let one player coast through practice then all players get that idea and then your team goes right down the toilet. Practice does NOT make perfect... perfect practice makes perfect. And loafing through practice is not perfect.

How dare he even mention someone didn't perform well in practice!! Especially the best QB that may ever play the game.
