Don't Expect Any Protests During National Anthem from Hawkeyes

Our Pastor told me he is not allowed to give his personal opinion on politics in a Sermon.

A pastor can educate on issues. They can make points about politicians as it relates to Church and life. They cannot tell you how to vote or base membership on how you vote.

The Constitution was to protect the Church from the State. For IRS they have to be politically neutral but can educate.

For example, a referendum coming up on abortion or gay rights. They can educate. The cannot say to vote yes or no.

Criticizing a President is not necessarily campaigning for or against that person. If Trump goes out of character and starts seeing a new woman, that is fair game to criticize him about. You could not say...don't vote for Trump because of it.

The law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office."

Always remember that laws are constantly being challenged and the Govt does push limits of power.

So you are sick about people exercising their first amendment rights. Is there any situation where you wouldnt be sick about someone exercising their first amendment rights. The thing is we all have this right so you have to accept it when others execise their right so you can go plant yourself on a street corner with a sign stating your ideas and exercising your rights. Or going to the statehouse to yell at representatives.

Sitting or taking a knew during the anthem is so calm compared to buring the flag yet the Supreme Court has twice upheld the right of citizens to burn the flag in an act of protest. And Justice Scalia even voted on the affirmative side.

The people who dont like what the NFL players are doing can go picket outside the stadiums, refuse to go to games, write letters to the editors, whatever.
The way I look at this is that I understand that they all have an opinion. They live and breathe too. It's not that they have one or want to share it. It's HOW and WHEN they are sharing it. The media has laid out there and very well I might add that they have the 'right' to do what they are doing. Well that's true. They can't get arrested and charged with a crime for it. That's what having the right to do something means. It doesn't mean that their employer can't make a rule saying if your on the clock with the uniform on representing them that they can have rules of decorum. It's funny to me that a league that fines and penalizes players for pulling out sharpies and fake mooning fans that they wouldn't have decorum rules about the anthem. Not that they can't that's their prerogative. It's just not a consistent way of doing things. To me it's the owners sticking their finger in the air and seeing which way the wind is blowing PR wise.

But back to the how and when of what they are doing it. During games on Sundays who amongst the public watches to see them do that? I only care about the game. Not the players opinions on social or any political issues. I think I'm in the majority but perhaps I'm wrong. So by them doing that they risk offending/upsetting however you want to look at it their audience. Now some will be upset but not enough to stop watching. Some might stop for awhile. I think there's a mixed bag on that to what extent we'll just have to see the longer they keep doing it.

I think it'd be interesting if the fans who disagree with what their doing would not go into the stadiums to their seats till after the kickoff. Imagine that an empty or mostly empty stadium for not only the anthem but the kickoff of a game on TV. Or heck the whole 1st quarter. You'd have owners in all out panic mode then. Besides the bad PR that'd be a hit on the their wallets. Less time in the stadium is less hotdogs/ beer/jerseys/keychains you name it being sold. I doubt that'll happen but I'd enjoy seeing it.

As far as the media's role in this I find it fascinating that they seem to think Kaepernick is some enlightened martyr. He was once fined 11k by the league for saying the N word on the field during a game back in 2014... Ever heard anyone talk about that?

If Kappernick, who started this whole mess, had done his homework beforehand he would have seen that the topic of his derision is, statistically, quite low on the list of crimes and injustices against black people.

Where's the outcry of black on black crimes?

Where's the outcry of the CIA funneling drugs into the the poorest of US neighborhoods, which are predominantly black?

I could go on and on but you get the point. If Kappernick really wants to accomplish something he first has to get up off his knees and focus on something that will really make a difference.

And he has to be willing to do so with or without the possibility of publicity.
but it's so much easier for him to wear socks that have drawings of a pig dressed as a police officer.

Isn't putting your country above all others a mild form of racism? People talk about everyone should be as one but and the same time want to put our country on a pedestal. Maybe it's time to make a world anthem and due away with the national anthem. That said I love my country above all others.

We Are the World done by soloists, perhaps? No thanks :)

Bottom line: the only knee I want to see from a Hawkeye is Stanley or Wiegers taking one at the end of the game. I don't even want to see it at the end of the first half!

BAUMANN: FERENTZ DIDN’T TAKE A STAND WHEN HE SHOULD HAVE

(“Here’s the way I look at it, too; name anybody that’s against or in favor of social injustice? Likeanybody? Who is in favor of cancer? … I can’t imagine there is anybody in favor of dumb stuff,” Ferentz said.

Who’s in favor of cancer? Probably no one. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but people do.

Who’s in favor of racism and inequality? People who are racist and believe that people of certain religions, genders, or backgrounds are not equal.

There are people out there who are in favor of that “dumb stuff,” Kirk.

And another thing about cancer — football does, in fact, use its national platform to support those with it. How many teams wear pink during October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Almost all of them.

What about the Kid Captains the football team partners with every week? They are suffering. Iowa is using football as a platform to promote awareness of the diseases, to bring in donations for the treatment and care for those sick children.

Why can’t football be a platform to bring awareness to all the other “dumb stuff,” too?

“So go do something that could really make a difference. Go do community service. Go to an activist rally … But go listen and find out what candidates are really about, and go vote. Go vote,” Ferentz said.

Community service isn’t what we’re talking about here. I have a hard time seeing how picking up garbage on the side of a highway or walking dogs at the local Humane Society is going to bring about racial equality.)

Part of the reason could be the quasi-fiasco with Faith Ekakitie last year. Faith handled it with calmness and class. No riots ensued, no stores looted, no Mr.-or-Mrs.-Civil-Rights coming to town for photo ops. And, of course, because KF is right: don't just do it before a game, do it on a regular basis.

Frankly, it loses significance to see the "protest" before a game then see players taunt and do other jack-wagon stuff after every sack, first down or broken-up pass.

I'm pretty sure kneeling before the anthem isn't going to bring about racial equality either. But volunteering at a homeless shelter or a battered woman's shelter is going to go a lot further in helping to bring about social justice than taking a freaking knee will....frankly I'm just tired of people paying lip service to this stuff, but never actually DOING something...

While that is a very worthwhile thing to do, this has brought a lot of attention to the issues. This along with youtube of some police shootings. I honestly can't understand why people can't at least get an inkling of understanding about the 3rd verse of the Anthem, which this is really all about. Then do a little investigation and read some of the other things Key wrote about blacks and a clearer picture comes about. Doesn't matter if most people white or black haven't read or sung the 3rd verse prior. The words are right there. The scenario in which they were written is easily accessible.

ML King wasn't perfect, but he did speed up attitudes by quite a bit that he wouldn't have accomplished volunteering in shelters. A number of posters here get all bent out of shape about anything Hawkeye Negative especially by Cowherd.. Imagine if it was about something actually much bigger.

"State law says: The only way a student can be exempted from reciting the pledge of allegiance is if they have a written request from their parents. And even then, the law says that they still have to stand."

Kim & Donald would be proud.

Rosa Parks didn't take a knee....she DID SOMETHING by sitting in the front of the bus.

MLK didn't take a knee (except in prayer while in jail).....he marched, he protested, he DID SOMETHING

In this day and age of click bait, twitter, facebook, etc....no one wants to do anything except retweet or "like" a post...to the point that people think taking a knee is doing something...

If you want to raise awareness for Cancer, you don't do it by kneeling during the Anthem, because you will alienate a segment of the population that feel the Anthem is above this type of thing.. If you want to raise awareness to child abuse, you don't do it by kneeling to the Anthem, because you will alienate a segment of the population that feel the Anthem is above this type of thing.

It makes no sense, and has never made sense to tie this cause to the National Anthem. My issue isn't with the cause, as it is damned well a very good cause. Any police who victimize the population deserved to get punish 100x worse than the average citizen for breaking the trust and job they were given. My issue is the manner in which it was implemented. Now good people who would normally back a good cause are totally turned off by it because it is hijacking something that they value and respect (the Anthem). These same people would be turned off by cancer awareness or child abuse awareness if they tried to Hijack the Anthem for their causes.

I am not sure how this goes over the heads of those who are protesting in this manner, or who support the kneeling during the Anthem. Now they frame the argument as if you DON'T kneel during the Anthem, you are a racists or are for police brutality.

He has donated his time and plenty of money....He has done more than just kneel.

How do you know that the players that are kneeling aren't doing more? I can point to several who are going back to their communities and trying to make a difference.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Ahhhhh, yes, I see it now so clearly. This is saying that people should tie their social justice agenda to kneeling during the Anthem. I'm thinking maybe those who are protecting unborn children (noble cause in their minds) should now also kneel during the Anthem. I'm thinking that the NFL against domestic violence should be kneeling during the Anthem in protest of all the NFL player who batter and abuse the women in their lives. I think every worthwhile cause in the country should be celebrated by kneeling during the National Anthem.

It is soooooooooo freaking stupid to alienate such a big segment of the population by tying your cause to what some will find as disrespecting the Anthem/country.

This mentality is why our Govt is set up to protect the minority from the majority. Given a long enough rope, you eventually hurt yourself with it. Thx for making my point.

No, the only issue getting a lot of attention is "Is this protest right/wrong, protected speech/not?". Anything else is just background at this point.
