Don't Expect Any Protests During National Anthem from Hawkeyes

Found these tweets interesting. Week 3 NFL ratings were actually up once Monday was factored in. Its way too early to tell what it means though. The Cowboys in prime time always draw high ratings regardless.

This tweet I found even more interesting.

Distribution is not the same as ratings, but it does show that cord cutting is hurting everyone in cable, not just ESPN.

I think its only naturally that ratings will continue to decline across all sports. MLB, NBA, NASCAR and the NFL have all seen ratings declines. People have so many other options now than just having to watch whatever's on cable.

To me the language is not concrete and a little tricky and a bit ambiguous. I think the wording is open to interpretation.

It's stated "....players on the field and bench area should stand at attention....".

Should is a bit ambiguous and to me doesn't state one has to stand. Otherwise, It would have been worded that players on the field and bench area must stand at attention.

Actually, should here might be the past tense of the auxiliary verb shall, which does mean must.

I've never understood the holding hands thing. I mean I get the symbol, but these are football players... Maybe they could do a group belly flop... If pink actually reduces aggression, what about holding hands? We used to smack shoulder pads and hit helmets with our hands.

Let's face it, it ain't football 'til you've smacked a 310-pound lineman--doesn't matter which side of the ball--on the ass. A subsequent "grab", however, is strictly optional and should, in most cases, be done off camera.

Just do away with the national anthem before games. I dont know the history. But I really dont see the point.
I doubt many of us have the national anthem played before we go to work.

So much this. It rids sports of some crappy singers, the National Anthem covers about six octaves so it's hard as hell for GOOD singers to sing, and it pales in comparison to something like "Rock 'N' Roll, Part II", "Back In Black" or "Jump Around".

Don't know about you, but I sing the National Anthem, God Bless America, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, then say 10 Hail Mary's, 6 Our Father's, and watch 3 episodes of GI Joe before I eat a classic Beef and Cheddar sandwich from Arby's. How else will people know I support the troops?

You lost me at "classic Beef and Cheddar"....

NFL players sign contracts, they aren't at-will employees like most of us normal people. There is no bylaw saying you have to stand for the national anthem. Even if there was the penalty would be a fine, not a cause for termination.

Sure, an owner can cut any player at any time for any reason, but they would still owe that player the remainder of the guaranteed money on their contract regardless. Then the owner would have to take a dead money hit on the salary cap for that contract for future years. For some players that wouldn't be much money, for others it would be millions...depends on the contract

Also keep in mind that NFL players are part of a union. If an owner were to fire a player for kneeling, the union would absolutely, 100% file a grievance and go to an arbitrator. The losing side would then more than likely file an appeal with the federal court (like Ezekiel Elliot is doing right now, and Tom Brady did for deflategate).

Guess what I'm saying is it would be a LOT of trouble (legal and monetary) for an NFL owner to fire a player for kneeling during the national anthem. Not to mention the publicity (good and bad) and the rift it would cause within the team and the NFL. Frankly, it wouldn't happen.

I wonder how "stand up" the NFLPA will be when Pittsburgh cuts Villanueva?

You have a right to protest. You don't have a right to be a player in the NFL (at least not in the Constitution that I've read).

Is it you "should" grab that 310 lb lineman's arse or is it you "shall" grab that 310 lb lineman's arse?

Isn't putting your country above all others a mild form of racism? People talk about everyone should be as one but and the same time want to put our country on a pedestal. Maybe it's time to make a world anthem and due away with the national anthem. That said I love my country above all others.

As a retired military member let me put my bit in. I stand for the anthem. I have my reasons. I also don't fault those who don't. That's their right.

For those of you making a big deal of this, in the military when the anthem is getting ready to be played you'll see a lot of guys running to get into a building so as not having to stop and salute. Raising my hand! Been there done that! Call it lazy, call it what you want. It's the way it is, it's not unpatriotic. Human nature. Lazy, whatever, not unpatriotic. And I have yet to stand at attention when it's played in my living room.

Now I have never been handed a flag, but I have been there when they were handed out. After that, you stand for the anthem.

The long arm of the Rob keeps people in check
Actually, when you think about it, it's kind or ironic. Rob is exercising his right to delete any posts that become too political because he basically "owns" the site. I fully support him in this ... someone has to control decorum. So in essence removing our "free speech". Some of you are arguing that an NFL owner can't or shouldn't do the same thing during the national anthem. Let that marinate for 20 minutes.

Best post on here. It really shows you can be patriotic, care about the national anthem, and find reasons not to stand for it, all at the same time. Few things are black and white.

I think someone else already brought up the contract/player union issue, so I'm not going to explain how HN & NFL are different.
