I mean no disrespect to Gatens, he will always be remembered as a Hawk. But he also started during the most frustrating time of Hawkeye basketball that I can remember. I am sure under Fran things would have been different, but I would just rather forget the Lick years.

Good Call.. I think all I remember is Gatens and Cole.

No, dont you thunk someone
ea,lse can do the job we havee recruits that have stars
are 7'0 with 7'10 wings and each weigh over
175 it must be
harder to shoot when you eat spaghetti at lunch time
your blocks go up and you rebound more i'm not worried about
that they HAVE time to get BBOPS and will take over BK

Lmao!

Please don't be doing this sh!t while I am still drinking coffee.

My post wasn't about Gatens, it was about us fans. We get all sanctimonious about him now, when in reality 80% of us trashed him for two or so years. It's hypocritical.

We are just trying to be like Herby here dude. You are right thou there was a lot of hate for Gatens his first few years. Do you think it would have been better if he hadn't played during one of the worst era's of Hawkeye bball?

It was never Gatens' fault that he was asked to be a go to guy scorer when he was really a complimentary player. When he finally had other legitimate scoring options around him, he finally took off.

We won't know if we truly miss gatens until we see what we can do in big games without him. Indiana is a game like that. Last yr he did what great players do he lifted the team in big situations. We haven't had a big situation yet to see if marble or white or someone else can do that. We expect it to be marble but it could just as easily be gesell or white or someone else. It isn't about picking up his ppg or his rebounds or anything like filling up the missing stats from the players that are gone. It is about the ice cold leadership and stepping up in the biggest moments.

Until we have a moment like that (or multiple moments) we won't know. I am thinking we may not win but marble will show us that on the big stage his light gets brighter and that could propel us later on in other big games.

The thread is titled "Does this team miss Matt Gatens???"

Yes, the team probably misses Gatens.

But the poll is titled "Do you miss Matt Gatens"

I never miss.

As far as I'm concerned, this is really a silly question. Of course you're going to miss one of the best basketball players in Iowa history. But that's the nature of college athletics. I would have loved to see Matt redshirt after his sophomore season and be on this team. He'd make a great 2/3 ala RDM.

Yes .. we miss him, but it is what it is.

This thread fails and the poll is invalid. Thread is entitled "Does THIS TEAM miss Matt Gatens?"
The poll is entitled "Do YOU miss Matt Gatens?"

I haven't seen so many people gang up on one person since high school. There are a lot of D bags on this board.

Also we built a double digits lead while Gatens was cold. It would have probably been a close game at the end if he didn't get hot but we still would have had a very good chance to win. We won by 15 or so.

do I miss Gatens the person no because I never knew him, as a former Hawkeye player, strickly has a former player yes, but this years team needs, No. teams can no longer focus on just one player, to many remember a couple of games and he is a superstar, but forget the games where he disappeared like in the NIT.
where Gatens had back to back 7 point games, a Tournament which could have set him apart.
Spank tried to diss Marbles 31 point game by saying Oregan plays no defense, if this is correct then WHY didn't Gatens score that 31 points.
the point is this team is built to be a team and NOT a one man show.
if you shut down Marble you have White to worry about and the other way around, then you still have to worry about Gesell as he is a much better shooter than Cartwright, Oglesby is another threat to score, as is Woodbury, McCabe, Badabe and even Olaseni, even if its a couple put backs and dunks with solid FT shooting.
this team is much deeper and more talented than some care to give Iowa credit for

No this team doesn't miss him. It has it's own identity now. Guess what players graduate and teams move on, it happens all the time.

Interesting that Gatens hasn't even crossed my mind this season, funny how that works..
