Does Fran get reprimand for blowing up at Dev, Eric?

From the New York Times, 2008:

But for all the good vibes that Siena has generated this season, its biggest national headlines came courtesy of Margaret McCaffery, the wife of Saints Coach Fran McCaffery and a former star player at Notre Dame. Margaret McCaffery’s outburst after Siena’s overtime loss to Loyola on Feb. 16 may have even trumped the publicity that Siena received for its upset of Stanford.

“It is unique,†said Siena’s athletic director, John D’Argenio. “She has a lot of passion for the game and understands it at a higher level. That’s what makes it a unique and interesting thing.â€

After the loss to Loyola, Margaret McCaffery told reporters in colorful terms that she felt Siena had been victimized by the officials. Perhaps worse, considering the delicate relationships between college coaches and referees, she said, “Will Bush is a horrendous official.â€

She was not done there. During Fran McCaffery’s news conference, he gave typical muted responses when asked his opinions on the officiating. After one of his answers, Margaret McCaffery chimed in from the back of the room, asking about a specific call.

Fran McCaffery, who had not been in the room for his wife’s first comments, cut her off. “Marg, that’s enough,†he said in a clipped tone.
He later chalked up her outburst to frustration.

“To be honest with you, I thought that what happened this year got completely blown out of proportion,†he said. “She made a comment about an official like a lot of family members would, but it was in the wrong place.â€

D’Argenio assured reporters it would not happen again. The local news media had a field day.

The incident highlighted the distinctly different personalities of Fran and Margaret McCaffery. Fran McCaffery, 48, is as studious and bookish as his bachelor’s degree in economics from Penn’s Wharton School would suggest.

Margaret McCaffery, formerly Margaret Nowlin, is 37 and considered much more outgoing. She graduated from Notre Dame, and the two began dating when they were basketball assistants there. They have four children, ranging in ages from 9 to 1...

...Margaret McCaffery first made headlines in 2006 when she and her husband were ejected from a game at Hofstra. After Fran McCaffery was tossed for what he said was the first time in his career, his wife was ejected later in the game after a tirade at officials that included profanity. She was escorted from the arena by a security guard.

I am wondering when Marg blows up at a game, I think it would be awesome.

If she did , that would be awesome

Heck no he doesn't need reprimanded. Did any of you play organized sports that think he should be? Coaches yell because they care and know one can do better. If coaches didn't care, didn't like someone, or didn't think someone could do better than they would just ignore you. Coaches yell because they're passionate and want to teach. Sure, some can go overboard but FM doesn't. Wow, he slammed a chair down without hitting someone and brushed up against someone. Guess none of you have ever been mad. When he stops yelling and just sits there, that's when fans should be worried.

watch the replay of the outburst. gabe and woody absolutely crack up and have to hide their laughter. does this really tell you that fran is out of control?

Ok, with that said, what does their home life look like? So you invite the neighbors over for dinner, the gundersons, Fran and Margie are just going bananas over the meatloaf. How fun is that, I want to go
Fran, while flipping burgers on the grill: "Get off the shed! I will punch you in the face if you do not get off the shed! Get of the shed! Get off the damn shed!"

Outstanding reference. Perfect.

Fran doesn't typically go off like that unless somebody did something really stupid. Having a pair of upperclassmen bungle a press break beyond belief and not have the sense to call a timeout is pretty well in fair territory, IMO.

Intruiging thread...

Is this why Fran has never had a high major coaching gig?

Yet, there is very little video evidence of on-going "melt-downs"

perhaps well timed and placed tirades for the 18 to 23 yos to get it done?

For those who get it on the Iowa BB team... they either smile, grimace or look away depending upon what they have done well or screwed it up... and can't do it again if they want to win... or produce or make a difference and contribute to a win.

As much as I ABSOLUTELY HATE GETTING MY *** CHEWED OUT AT ANY TIME IN MY LIFE... more often than not.... WHEN I GOT MY *** CHEWED OUT BY A COACH, A BOSS, A TEACHER or A MENTOR...

I always improved, got better and GOT IT!

Also, I think the look on Dev's face is overblown. Just because he looks glazed over doesn't mean he isn't listening.

Honestly, would people feel better if he were ******** his pants at that moment? I know I wouldn't.

Nobody said that. You know nobody said that. Learn to read Nebraskan.

I need to learn to read? The OP mentioned Barta and the conference "coming down on Fran" and Scorpio and SonofaSailor both specifically mentioned him getting fired for his behavior. And don't you ever call me a Nebraskan. I was born and raised in Iowa and will always be a Hawkeye, lived in Nebraska for 5 years now and still have an Iowa ID. Just can't bring myself to get a Nebraska one.

I was just hypothetically talking...I think if Fran were to go nuclear ala "The General" Iowa would be encouraged by the Big Ten to part ways with him...and they proved that after the MSU chair throw incident reprimand last year. Delaney and the BIG are not going to have another Knight situation.
