Does Fran get reprimand for blowing up at Dev, Eric?

`The thing that isn't being mentioned is recruiting. Like it or not parents see this stuff. Not many want their kids face on a pic like that. BK developed a cult following. FM doesn't have a cult following (except for a few on HN). The bigger concern is the impact on recruiting. Some kids can handle it fine. Hawks are having a hard enough time with current players and mental toughness. On one hand it made weed out those less tough. On the other hand, if you are being recruited by equal schools or better, who do you want to play for. For the generation growing up watching Happy Feet and getting ribbons for participation, this won't play well right here in River City, if it keeps up.

Also it's human nature that it will get worse if the team doesn't get better.

Have you ever watched Izzo or Crean coach a game? Honest question.

Hate being that guy, but IMO based on teh look on Marble's face I don't think the psychopathic screaming and pouting fits really affect the players anymore and that ship has sailed its course. This board's discussed these in your face coaches that do nothing but scream previously, but I'm truly starting to feel that its lost the affect it once had when it comes to motivation and getting inside a players head.

Iowa should reprimand Coach Brands. He's just too intense on that wrestling match.
Do you see me yelling at people in my every day life? That's just too passionate, no way to show his feelings out there.

Outrage. Just an outrage.

Can't believe the audacity of a coach to yell at his players or so passion in any form. Amazing to me. And they get paid all that money too!! UGH! The worst!!

The players I have talked to have been constant on one front when comes to Fran. They know what he expects. They know that when they fail in that regards, they are going to get chewed out when it's warranted. But they also know when that's over, he still the guy they can hang out with and have common ground. Fran is the hard-nosed, high-expectation front figure, but he also has a big heart and love these kids unconditionally. And it's reciprocated. The players love playing for him. He is a players' coach that will light into them when it's needed. They know this, everyone know this.

The players learn to listen to what is being said not how it's being said. This team plays hard every night, they get after teams on defense this year, the kids at the end of the bench are into the game every night. If you're implying the team is tuning out Fran, you're wrong.

Yeah, I also don't tackle a co-worker in the hallway as if I'm on a football field.
You know sports are different than every day situations, right?

Yes, but just because the situation is different doesn't mean your reaction has to be. I don't believe you have to scream to be an effective coach. Most young adults and adults do not learn most effectively through irate screaming tantrums. There are better ways to teach and get desired behaviors.

The funniest part is posters on here make fun of Paw Whoads for acting like this then praise Fran for doing the same.

Totally agree. I mean, I could care less if Fran gets so ****** he walks out to mid court, takes a dump, points to the kid, and says that's what your play looks like tonight, I just think there are much better ways to teach than going bizirk, getting an inch from a kids grill and going ape shite.

I had a coach in Jr. high that did nothing but yell and would periodically get to the point in which he threw or broke things. The guy scared us to death at first, but at the end of the season he'd broke us down so much that we were no longer scared of him and we basically quit playing for him because of the belittling. Not saying the players don't respect Fran or don't like him as a coach, but they're playing hard for him and if he tones it down a bit, I'm guessing they'll do the same.

Players generally see traits they like in a coach when they're being recruited, I'm pretty sure he didn't win over the recruits by screaming at them in their living room and acting like a lunatic so I'm thinking that his ability to lose his temper wasn't something that won the players over. I'm guessing he could tone it down a bit and they'd still play just as hard for him.

For sure, I mean let's not let him act like Bob Knight. He was an awful coach and never won any national championships.

The irony with Knight is that he couldn't hold himself to the same standards of self-discipline and respect that he demanded from his players.

On Fran's behavior, I haven't heard any stories of him crossing the line outside of game situations. To me, it appears he has the self-discipline to act appropriately.

At the same time, his game time antics run the risk of becoming exactly that - antics. The best coaches know how to pick and choose their spots. The red-faced, in your mug screaming act - similar to the hyperbole he uses to describe his players in the preseason - seems like it is on the verge of becoming a little too frequent, which can ultimately cause it to lose its effectiveness.

I love the job he's done though.

Again, if Iowa's players are too sensitive that they can't take a ribbing from a coach, then there are deeper issues at hand with them.
The good thing is, none of these players are negatively affected from the way Coach McCaffery runs his team.

I don't think it's necessarily the fact they can't take a ribbing. I think its just the antics he uses have been worn out and don't have that same affect on the players that they once had. Marble looks unphased, and I'm sure that Fran was screaming at him to relax.

Hey more power to farking Fran, he found a job where he can literally scream, swear, kick objects, yell, and remain employed, even held in high stature by many. Good for you mother ******, I kid, calm down

Judging by the Hawks play last night, he should've started screaming in the first few minutes. Might have woken them up.

It's cute how people act like Fran is the only coach who screams and yells at players.

No, I would say the majority do, at all levels, which I think is ignorant behavior often by ignorant people (not all). If it was the most effective way to teach and get results, wouldn't we use this in all areas if life? At school, at home, at the office, etc

Take coach k at duke, I know he does yell at times, but I think he is mostly pretty collected and teaches, explains, corrects, etc. I think he has a few wins. And yes, I know he does get upset too
