Could The Rumors......

force Barta's hand here? Maybe he had no intention of letting Lick go after this season. But perhaps the rumor mill today provided a window of opportunity for him? Maybe the UofI was behind it, to guage fan reaction? Well, I think it was off the charts.

I have supported Lick all year and I still do. However, there is a certain amount of excitement thinking about a new coach taking this team in a new direction. My first hope would be that all current players stay and all recruits remained comitted if Lick were let go.

This is a very interesting theory. Very dangerous, but very interesting. Regardless the University can't ignore the fan reaction and sentiment today. It is clear if Lickliter remains on as coach the Universtiy has a lot of selling to do. Even scarier is the potential impact this could have on recruits.

Welcome to the dark side, Forever. :)

I just want what's best for the team. If Lick can turn it around, so be it. I wouldn't mind some more up tempo basketball. And, if Lick were let go, I wouldn't complain. Unless the new coach sucked and I could say I told you so.:)

Honestly though, I have been very intrigued by everything that has gone on today and I will leave it at that.

By the fanbase, or someone connected to the university?

Neither.

But I will leave this discussion saying it was done because they did not want Lickliter on the sidelines anymore and this was the only way to get the ball rolling. Rumors had to be created to shake Barta, Lick, and the administration. Whether it happens or not, we shall see. The rumors have done some damage, though.

Like WWII depth charges...they didn't have to be on target, they just had to shake things up so the pressure would crush the hull...

I impressed myself with my analogy, how do I give myself points?

Then that leaves us with the boosters? Possibly ex-players?

Iowa fans are probably not much different than fans elsewhere...but they seem to think that by starting baseless rumors they can create the action that they desire...rarely is that actually the case.

If Barta were swayed enough by rumors then Alford would have been gone long before he left.

If anything...the effect of starting rumors is that it demoralizes the coach/player they are started about and have a definite negative effect on their psyche and thus their job performance.

Fanbase rumors undoubtedly played a major role in Alford's departure...but obviously they didn't cause Barta to fire him...but rather they started his eyes a wandering. Then people got all pissy about him looking elsewhere. What would you do if a bunch of your customers at work started spreading rumors that you were getting fired? Would you maybe check out Career Builder in between message board posts?

Forcing Barta's hand may not have the intended ending. An AD usually has a plan and deviating from that plan may not go well. Granted, the status quo wasn't working but Barta's ducks may not be in a row just yet.

Careful Spank, I'm not sure I like where you're going with this...
