Could The Rumors......

I find it just interesting that yesterday I was listening to Miller's radio comments on the state of the program and then wake up this morning to see people saying Lick fired.. Sure I know that Miller doesn't have that much power, just a crazy timing...

There have been a couple of threads along these lines today. Yes I think this has reached critical mass. I think it's entirely possible that when today started Lick was the coach for next year, and when today ends he wont be.

No it does not....

As hard as it is for some to see that, it could be true.
Getting a new coach now doesn't guarantee anything.

that is absolutely the case.

But it is darn near impossible to see how the Lickliter era would/could succeed, even if the rumors were not true and never occurred today. There comes a point in any endeavor when the momentum gets tilted so far to one side that there is no way it can work as constituted.

The stories in the Gazette were downright disturbing to me. The comments that people went on the record with about Lickliter's lack of initial engagement with the state's AAU coaches disturbed me greatly. They didn't you? You cannot win at this level if you cannot recruit good talent and keep that talent engaged in your program once you get them on campus. He has been unable to do either. Where else do guys who are gonig into their junior and senior years--and who are in line to be starters and focal points of the team--transfer? This is unheard of and no program can succeed with that happening.

Any new coach has a certain window to establish momentum in the right direction for his program. There is a natural level of excitement and energy that surrounds new coaches. Everyone (fans, alumni, to some extent players) rally around the new guy. They all want him to succeed. The coach has to turn that support into genuine belief throughout the program that his way WILL work. For Ferentz, it began the last half of his second year and carried through into the third when Iowa went to the Alamo Bowl. For Lickliter, it appeared that it might work last year through the non-conference and early in the conference season when Iowa was 10-3. Then Tate got hurt, Kelly and Peterson left and the belief in the program vanished.

Neither.

But I will leave this discussion saying it was done because they did not want Lickliter on the sidelines anymore and this was the only way to get the ball rolling. Rumors had to be created to shake Barta, Lick, and the administration. Whether it happens or not, we shall see. The rumors have done some damage, though.

WOW. Is this speculation, or fact?
