Campbell over/under

Here's how I think it will play out.

ISU will renegotiate his contract this off-season. That will keep him around for another 2-3 seasons. Around that time, a blue-blood job will come open, or the NFL will come calling.

Everything changes if Meyer decides to step down and he gets an offer, but, unless he really explodes, my guess is he'll still be #3 or 4 on OSU's list. Herman probably will be at the top.

Everyone here is going to think I'm crazy, but I think he's there for the long haul. I think he turns their football team into a consistent 7-8-9 win program, and stays there until he doesn't want do it anymore. He is going to be what Hayden Fry was to Iowa.

I'll be the first to admit that I always root for ISU except for when they play my beloved Hawkeyes. It's a state pride thing for me.

I never understood the hatred that many Iowa fans have toward ISU fans & vice versa. Both fanbases talk trash about/to each other, but don't dish it out if you can't take it. The trash talk is all in fun, and makes the rivalry more interesting IMO.

The hatred is simple -

Iowa has 4 million people. It produces around ten D1 starter level kids per year in football. It can't sustain two quality D1 P5 teams.

In addition, Ames is closer to two top 100 population metro areas in Des Moines and Omaha. In short, if ISU gets good, Iowa will decline and corporate booster support cod switch swiftly to ISU. During basketball season, almost all the talk in DSM is already about the Cyclones. Give Kieth Murphy a chance to bury the Hawkeye football program for good, and he'll do it without blinking an eye.

Campbell needs to go and Iowa needs to keep beating ISU and Nebraska, because otherwise we aren't going to be getting the top oline prospects in this region anymore.

Please. He will probably be the best coach they've had since McCarney... but spare me the Hayden comparison. What Fry did was unique and special... a hell of a lot more than just winning more games.
And let’s be real, Campbell hasn’t done anything special other than prove that he can make a team fluky in an incredibly inept league.

Is Campbell's specialty offense or defense. His defense is winning him games especially in that conference where if you just make a team punt or turn it over 5 times you win. ISU beat two ranked teams last year and two so far this year.

It depends on how much he is making at ISU, who comes knocking on his door, etc . Not sure if a bunch of P5 teams are a step up but most Big 10, Pac 12, and SEC teams are a step up but ACC not so sure.

How much is he making?
I think he’s an offense guy. Fan base was super mad prior to last 2 games that he didn’t have an OC and was calling plays himself.

This seems kind of dramatic. Omaha and Des Moines don't produce that much D1 talent. Iowa is closer to Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis which produce far more D1 talent. I don't want to see Campbell there long term because I agree it's not good for Iowa, but it's not the end of the world either.

... People will say 'but the QB!" and its nonsense...they said "but the QB" the year before when it was Park vs Kempt, then they said the same thing in 2016 when it was Lanning vs Park. None of these QB's were able to beat iowa, but then their backup went on to do great things in the terrible Big 12...and all the ISU fans said "if only we had the backup QB we would have beaten Iowa'. This has happened THREE years in a row now...
Quarterback regression???

If he doesn't get grabbed by a big school/NFL then he will make ISU a thorn in Iowa's side for years. Iowa will have a legit competitor for instate recruits. On the plus side Iowa's strength of schedule will make a jump.

^^THIS^^ ............................. ain't gunna happen.

Nobody is going to stay at Iowa State unless they have strong ties or feelings for Iowa State. Hell, Iowa State basketball couldn't even keep Fred Hoiberg for krist sakes, they aren't going to keep Matt Campbell. It's a stepping stone. It isn't like Ames is Tallahassee or cripes even Madison. Lincoln, NE is more appealing then Ames, IA. I actually could see him eventually moving over to the BIG at some point.

Dude can coach. Why not stay at ISU? Make some good money and do what Fitz has done at NW. But as a Hawkeye fan, I would love to see him take employment elsewhere.

There are a few reasons, especially with a young coach. What are his aspirations? Does he want to be the best and win a NC? If so, he won't be there long.

Is he content to make 3 mill a year and raise his children in Ames? Then I could see him being there for a few years or if he thinks Ames is a great place to put your children thru school. Those decisions come into play with a young coach.

So, kind of depends on his goals, aspirations, and what is best for his family.

I agree that many coaches would take any gig in the Big 10. Super revenue for your sport, etc, Brand and better chance and better bowls

If he is smart he will stay put and average 7 wins a season. There is no team in the country that offers a better more wholesome state for raising a family and there is very few P5 programs that have reliable job security for making bowl games. If he stays at ISU he is almost guaranteed to make 100+ million over his coaching career. It would take a special job at a special program to get me to leave that gravy train.

Nebraska should have hired this young coach. Campbell has a very bright future. I actually hope he stays at Iowa State. It would be good for the entire state.

3 last year. They won at #21 Memphis end of the season.

McCarney did well with attaining 7 win seasons and they didn't think that was enough. Maybe they've learned from that.
