Barta confirmed - NO CBI

Here's the deal tork, I'd like us to keep playing to, but this is probably the only year in my life that I can honestly say I feel that way or probably ever feel that way.

But if our conference doesn't want us to and or Jim Delaney why would we? We get 22 Million a year and rising, because of our affiliation with both of them. He has a reason and I'm not even going to worry about what it is, I just assume the guy that's kicking other conferences butts on the business end of college athletics knows what he's doing. It's not the big dance, not even the little dance, it's like the singles over 40's get together at the Y.

Bingo, couldn't have said it better myself.

Ummm Gary Barta already basically said Iowa wouldn't want to take that risk? And he is the guy that makes the financial decisions...the BIG probably discouraged Gary and he made the fiscally smart decision.

Are you serious? He publicly said that because that's what Daddy Delaney wants.

Why are you degrading Delany with name calling? the man has made the BIG into a college sports juggernaut...I for one am glad he had the foresight and appreciative that Iowa is a member of such a stable and secure conference.

If he feels it's in the conference's best interest to stay home, we stay home....

It's not like it's a real tournament. The PLAYERS had their shot to get to the post-season and how many times did they fail in that situation? I can think of Purdue, NW, PSU and others where they had a shot to solidify an NIT bid or even get on the bubble....they have no one to blame but themselves...that is the sad reality. Suck it up, keep moving forward.

I'm not as big a fan of Delaney as some are. There are times I wonder if he's blazing a trail for college athletics that will end up in a place where we don't want to be.

But that comment was more directed at Barta's. He's just doing what Delaney tells him to. That's not a sign that indicates we would turn down th CBI regardless of Delaney's thoughts on the matter.

And like has been said countless times already, ANY tournament would be good for us right now.

It's been said countless times, but it hasn't been supported in any convincing way. Why is playing in a tournament necessarily any better than staying at home and telling the team that if they don't like the way that feels, they should make sure they take care of business next year when they have the opportunity to do so?

This. Saying that grass is purple countless times doesn't make it so.

I'll never understand the logic of paying for a post season tournament that includes nobodies. I understand Barta's decision.

It makes sense for teams from 1-bid leagues that don't no margin for error when it comes to qualifying for the NCAAs or the NIT. For a team from the Big Ten that has every opportunity to earn their spot as one of the top 100 teams in the country, I don't see the point.

Here are the reasons I see people providing for playing.
1) We owe it to Gatens.
Really? Seriously? One player is more important than the team, university, or conference? Giving him the opportunity to play more minutes than any player in the conference over the last four years and a college education are not enough? He was a one year 2nd/3rd team all conference selection. He stuck it out during a tough time, but so do many Hawkeyes that play on teams that won't see the national post season.

2) Some teams have succeeded the next year.
From last year's CBI field, Creighton, Davidson, and Montana will be in the NCAA field. That is less than 25% and two will be 14 or lower seeds.

3) It shouldn't cost that much?
Do you have any real idea. Have you seen a spreadsheet? Do you think the league doesn't understand cost and benefit analysis?

4) Player development.
So Marble gets more time to work on a position he won't be playing? White and Og's get to spend more time on the court and less in the weight room? Gabe gets to sit on a bench more? May gets to pound his back more?

5) We are not too good for it.
Seriously? Is that a reason?

However, all of these things are moot, because Delaney makes decisions ten steps ahead. Most factors involved in these decisions you will never know.

1) We actually DO owe it to Gatens. He suffered two seasons of Lick.
2) All I care about is IOWA, I don't care about the rest of the field. And it's pretty much a given that mid-majors and conference tourney winners who finished middle of pack or lower in regular season, or less-than-mid-major teams will get low seeds. Who cares?
3) The league OBVIOUSLY doesn't understand cost and benefit analysis. Unless you're suggesting that the Ticket City, Little Caesar's, GMAC, etc. were lucrative for the conference.
4) ANY chance for extra practice and games is a plus. It's also a reward for improvement for the team and program.
5) What constitutes "too good"? We couldn't get NIT in 2007 at 17-14. We finished as 8th seed in BTT for this year. Yet, we have 4 wins over Top 25 and beat two of the semifinal teams in BTT, sweeping one of them, only playing the other once. In other words, undefeated against seeds 2 & 4. From the best conference in the country.

Frankly, 5) is almost a better argument for why we SHOULD get NIT invite.

Misconception. He made OSU a juggernaut. He certainly ensured them playing in the Sugar Bowl after 2010 season. He didn't stand in the way when Brust transferred from IOWA to Wisconsin.

Not sure he's ever done anything for IOWA. IOWA was a member of the Big 10 before Delaney entered the scene.

How many times do I have to say this, it's a joke about practice time...maybe a couple days extra if that...besides I think in basketball you can continue to practice until Final Four....but the good coaches are cutting down practice time anyways this time of year.

Lots of stuck up fans in here. What if they players want to play in it? Would you still be saying "no" because your snobbish attitude trumps all?

Some pretty neat "Hawk" fans in here.
