Barta confirmed - NO CBI

Re: Barta confrimed - NO CBI

Who else would be involved in the decision. The AD doesn't report to the regents. I can't believe Mason would get involved in this.

Doubt if Mason even knows what the CBI is unless she had Barta explain it to her.

Wrong Iowa should play in it if they get left out of the NIT if anything to give Gatens a chance to play in the post season, they OWE him that much for him sticking through the WORST times in Iowa basketball....

Here are the reasons I see people providing for playing.
1) We owe it to Gatens.
Really? Seriously? One player is more important than the team, university, or conference? Giving him the opportunity to play more minutes than any player in the conference over the last four years and a college education are not enough? He was a one year 2nd/3rd team all conference selection. He stuck it out during a tough time, but so do many Hawkeyes that play on teams that won't see the national post season.

2) Some teams have succeeded the next year.
From last year's CBI field, Creighton, Davidson, and Montana will be in the NCAA field. That is less than 25% and two will be 14 or lower seeds.

3) It shouldn't cost that much?
Do you have any real idea. Have you seen a spreadsheet? Do you think the league doesn't understand cost and benefit analysis?

4) Player development.
So Marble gets more time to work on a position he won't be playing? White and Og's get to spend more time on the court and less in the weight room? Gabe gets to sit on a bench more? May gets to pound his back more?

5) We are not too good for it.
Seriously? Is that a reason?

However, all of these things are moot, because Delaney makes decisions ten steps ahead. Most factors involved in these decisions you will never know.

The Creighton coach said he would never play in it again. I agree totally with hawkeyewx

Uh.. what?

Earlier this week, the Omaha World-Herald had a story headlined “CBI helped pave way for CU’s run to NCAAs.â€￾ Creighton played seven CBI games, five in Omaha.
Said Bluejays Coach Greg McDermott: “Any time you have an opportunity to win a championship, regardless of whether it was in the CBI or some other tournament, it helps your program develop.â€￾

CBI not good enough for 17-16 Iowa? Really? | TheGazette

Not that I don't want to see them continue to play but I don't really care either way. If a team wants to play in a post season tourney win more regular season games or don't lose in the 2nd rd of the conference tourney.

I feel bad for the players but its on them for not taking care of business earlier in the year.

I love the enthusiasm that we want to keep watching Iowa basketball, but this is getting really ridiculous.

Not only is this not Barta's decision, but it is the right decision by the conference, and to think that Iowa is above the conference is the height of both ignorance and arrogance.

Fact of the matter is, and everyone can deny it all they want but you all know it's true.

If our record was exactly the same and Gatens didn't have those three games at the end of the season, this would be a non issue with everyone here.

1. No, Gatens is not bigger than the team. But this shouldn't be Delaney's decision to make.
2. And what's the percentage for teams that played nowhere last year that are making the Dance this year?
3. The conference doesn't foot the bill to play, so why does Delaney care how much it may or may not cost?
4. It doesn't offer a ton in terms of player development, I'll grant you that.
5. When the reason AGAINST playing seems to be that we ARE too good for it, then yes "We are not too good for it," is a reason.

1. No, Gatens is not bigger than the team. But this shouldn't be Delaney's decision to make.

Yes it should. He runs the conference that is the cash cow for 11 athletic departments. The conference makes the rules that all the schools play by, and I seriously doubt that this is a new decision to screw Iowa.

2. And what's the percentage for teams that played nowhere last year that are making the Dance this year?

Not relevant. CAAR's point was correct, that to try to draw a line between playing in the CBI and NCAA tournament success the following year is dubious at best.

3. The conference doesn't foot the bill to play, so why does Delaney care how much it may or may not cost?

Because Delaney has to look at how the conference as a whole is perceived, not how one fan base wants to keep watching basketball because their team is watchable for the first time in four seasons.

4. It doesn't offer a ton in terms of player development, I'll grant you that.

Playing always helps, somehow I doubt that these guys aren't going to be serious gym rats over the next ten months.

Iowa isn't too good for it, the Big 10 is too good for it. We are part of the Big 10. You can't take your toys and go home because you don't like some of the decisions the conference makes.

The ACC and Big East have had teams play in this tournament. If it's good enough for conferences as good as those two typically are, it should be good enough for the Big Ten. Especially since this doesn't have to be a regular occurrence. For Iowa, this is basically just something to really get the ball rolling. Play in it once, then never go back.

I just don't buy the whole negative impact on the conference's image. Hell, the only reason we even know that the ACC and Big East sent teams is that people looked it up to support the argument that WE should go. If it weren't for that, none of us would even know about those teams. It certainly doesn't seem to have hurt the ACC or Big East's images.

The Big East is a fart away from imploding as a conference.

The ACC is legit and is a great argument for your cause, except that they don't have a 25MM television network to also protect.

Just drop it...I love Gatens and co. BUT it all comes back to them...want to play in the post-season? Don't lose by 15 to Campbell and get blown out by Clemson. It all comes back to the players & coaches...they made big progress this year but didn't take care of business to reach the post season.

As if HDNet is an actual rival network to the BTN/Fox? Please. That is what this is all really about. It's got nothing to do with not aligning a conference team in a (largely) mid-major tournament. If the CBI were carried by ESPN, there wouldn't be any issue at all along those lines. It's all about the money, and not something that's in the best interests of any of the teams near the bottom of the standings. I'm not saying Iowa is getting picked on. We're just the school currently in the boat that other schools have been in before us.

It's an unwritten conference policy...see Illinois AD comments.. "NIT or bust"

And it's a garbage policy. It's got nothing to do with the quality of the tournament being beneath the Big Ten. It's got EVERYTHING to do with the tournament being carried by HDNet.

The good news is: At least we won't have a thread as long as this one complaining about the games not being carried by the BTN.

Oh you mean, protecting the brand image and protecting the integrity of the network created by the conference that pays out millions upon millions of dollars to every athletic department in the conference?

You are making arguments based on your emotions, where I can minimally see where you are coming from, and might even agree with it.

From a business standpoint, it makes tons of sense.

Guess who wins.

Which is stupid, HDNet is nowhere close to competing with Fox, BTN, or any other channel that carries sports. Haven't we seen Iowa on Versus before?

If the CBI were carried by ESPN, there would be no issue at all with Big Ten teams playing in it. HDNet is the equivalent of Versus, if even that. It's no threat at all to the BTN.

I don't care either way but if you're going to talk about Gatens (and other players) wanting to play more games, beat **** teams like Campbell and that problem would have been solved.
