Badger Football Hire a Lesson for Iowa?

Again, some people think that it's just a given that when Iowa makes a change, its up and to the right. I don't see it that way and am not ready to kick Kirk to the curb.

You will never publicly admit that not matter how bad things get. Of course I could be wrong, but doubt I am.

If next year is another year like this year offensively? I'll write the column the day after Thanksgiving. And by like this year offensively I mean no attacking downfield and routes run short of the sticks. Have a .500 record but trying to attack is one thing. Going 4-8 without firing shots downfield is another. If it happens again it means nothing was learned and would prove to me KF is too set in his ways and it would be time to go.

That said, I can't possibly believe we will see that again.

Even then, it won't matter cuz I don't see possibly happening until after 2014 at earliest if things head south

If Iowa starts throwing around 3.8 million at coaches, they won't have to settle for a MAC coach..

That's the selling point right there, if we want a top level coach, go throw 4 milly at him and see if he can turn that down. I highly doubt wisky threw that type of bread at any coach they looked at prior to GA.

I am on the side of KF leaving. He's had some good teams, and as it'll be pointed out, some of the most successful teams in the history of the program. While I would be happy if he were to leave now, I think he's earned one more year to prove he is capable of turning this around. Do I think he will, no. There's no talent, the coaching is poor, and honestly we're probably a few more seasons away from being a 8 win team. That's my beef, the fact that we're this far along in his tenure and we're looking at 6 wins as the max for the next two to three seasons. That is on KF for allowing coaches to stay past their welcome (Kaz), for not putting a stronger emphasis on recruiting, and having a more reactive stance to all the legal troubles.

For those afraid of making a poor hire after KF, I ask what other coach could come in here and make football this boring to watch? We already have Lick style football right now with KF. Unless Gary Barta feels it's necessary to bring in the same type of coach, I'd be willing to bet ANYONE could come in and coach and at least the football would be a little more fun to watch.

Look at Fran, its still too early to say he can turn around the program. He has brought some hope, and a more exciting style of basketball. Will we compete for Big10 championships, maybe not, but the fact is Iowa basketball is more fun to watch. I actually CARE about it.

I don't care about Iowa football, and I'm not sure I can knowing KF is going to keep things status quo. There is a chance he can fool me and turn it around, but it's going to take a change of his coaching style and overal thought process in regards to football to do so.

Hope you don't take what I said the wrong way. I am not saying I blame you for not saying publicly that it's time for ferentz to go. If it means you lose your good relationhsip with ferentz, I don't think I'd do it either in your position. I realize there are some things you can not do in your capacity of head of HawkeyeNation.com.

1) I did not see the list of applicants for the job. Did you? If so, please post names so we can evaluate who might have been a better hire than Brian Ferentz.
2) "Natural improvement"? Put that on your loan application the next time you go to the bank looking for money to improve your house, see how far that goes.

Yeah it will. My house will be older, wiser and stronger. Started freshman and sophomores in college up against jrs and srs will make a diff. They were young. They will get better. Our line will be healthy again and have another year of experience and weight room. Fresh start at QB. Plenty of worthy RBs. There is optimism.

In your opinion, and maybe the story you just wrote infers how you feel. Do you see this program returning to the highs we once saw under Kirk?

If you need to stay non-bias and can't answer, all good.

Why would you wait until after Thanksgiving? How about at 2-6??

Have to wait and see what GD has saved up for Nebraska next year. Maybe he's planning on sucking teams in for almost two years before unleashing an Oregon-esque offensive explosion against the Huskers. Jon, wouldn't want to judge too early.

Well, unless it's the Wisconsin hire, then Andersen is obviously a huge failure before he's even been officially introduced.

KF was with the Baltimore Ravens as an OL coach when hired. Was with the Browns before that...you know that Belichek lineage thingy?

Is that the Belichek lineage thingy that's produced outstanding head coaches like Eric Mangini, Josh McDaniels, Romeo Crennell, and most directly relevant to this discussion, Charlie Weiss?

Honestly, this makes no sense to me. How can anyone sit here and think that next year is going to be any different? The GD hire was an epic failure and if you think next year is going to be any different then you are kidding yourself. My questions is, what is the tipping point, another 4-8 season? Another terrible recruiting class? Another horrible offensive year? We are in big trouble, not only next year but for years to come, the writing is on the wall.

If someone asked if I think we have seen the last 10 win season of Kirk Ferentz era, my answer would be yes. The historical odds would bet against that, the return of Michigan, Nebraska now on the schedule each year...several factors

Not a particularly great article. You are basing it off of the premise that Kirk can still have some success here. That is very much in doubt. Recruiting looks awful, and there is very little elite level talent currently on the roster. This is not even bringing up the disaster that was the Greg Davis hire, compounded by the horrific decision to bring him back for another season. If it's a choice between taking a leap into the unknown, versus a few more 6-6 and 7-5 seasons, I'll take the unknown every time. To me, there isn't a gigantic difference between 6-6 and a Toilet Bowl bid, or 4-8. As noted, we won't be paying the new guy all that much, and if it doesn't work out, you just pull a Lickliter and start all over. Also, due to our extensive coaching lineage that is more or less exclusive to Iowa, I have the utmost confidence that we will have a higher caliber of candidate than a school of our prestige level would typically have. Of course, the potential fly in the ointment of the whole thing is exactly what did us in the last time, which is beauracratic incompetence. I have absolutely ZERO confidence in Gary Barta making any decision for the University of Iowa beyond what to charge for parking passes next year. This, more than anything, is what should give Iowa fans pause as they consider whether or not a change should be made.

MO TROLL...

Then why do you advocate keeping him for even one more minute? With the cupcake OOC's, you do know you are essentially saying we are finished with + .500 Big 10 records as well? Better listen to some Pink to get your head right:

Another important element missing from JD's comparisson, is many big time coaches and even rising stars will choose to not work for an iconic AD such as Barry. Most stars desire latitude and not working with their bosse's hands on their shoulders; which may be part of the reason BB left, as he felt he had outgrown Barry's shawdow.

This would be the only point I think Jon overlooked in his assessment. Regardless, I still think Jon's point is valid, that it is naive to think Iowa is a given to bring in some top name coach should KF leave.
