Apathy has set in

Dean, me and you are in the exact same boat here. We don't always see eye to eye, but we have the same voting record on this matter. We were pissed off and fed up with Kirk until the miracle of 2015. We both were positive about Brian as OC. We both again now are jaded and fed up.

The thing that I can't get over is that I'm still not sure that Brian is the problem. I see Brian's youth and angst in the way this offense plays, but I also see an aggressiveness that has not been present for some time. I have to wonder if there isn't a constant clashing of philosophies between father and son. I have to wonder if this were Brian's team completely would we see a different team mentality and different results. At the end of the day Brian is a Ferentz and right now it feels like all things Ferentz should be burned like a plague riddled corpse, but it might be the best if pops pulled the health card at the beginning of next season and let Brian have a crack at interim HC. We know we aren't getting rid of either one by next year so we might as well see what we actually have in Brian. It's just like giving your back up QB a shot when your starter is stinking it up....oh wait Kirk doesn't like to do that very much.
Whistling past the graveyard won't save us

Because GB has clearly shown that he demands excellence, right?

Certainly not, but I don't believe that Gary gets to make this decision in a vacuum. Money will have it's say and from the few money cows that I talk to that needle does not point towards a Ferentz succession right now.

The crazy thing about the new aggressive style, it has actually cost us this year. Now I'm not saying I'm for going back to ultra conservative stuff, yet there is a time and place for it. I argued many times on here that there is no such thing as "playing not to lose". It is simply deciding that a safe play gives you better odds of winning. Think of it like poker, you can't be pot committed on every hand. You gotta play the hands you are dealt, and throw away the losers to play another day. Going for it on 4th down vs Wisconsin cost us early in the game, points would have been better. Going for it on 4th down vs Penn St. cost us as Penn St. scored before the half. Going for 2 vs Purdue cost us.

I can live with those aggressive calls, but man does it sucks they have really cost us this year. At the same time we have had aggressive fake FG calls the last couple years that have totally paid off. We go for it on 4th down a lot, and many times it pays off. Overall I am a fan of being more aggressive, but you also got to live with the ones that don't work out, because you aren't going to get every one of them.

Well aggressive calls backfiring and hurting the team are what coaches fear. It is why so many of them turn into conservative shells of their once selves. Brian is young and obviously aggressive and hungry. Learning from mistakes is a necessary thing. There is an art of when to be bold and when to fold. I don't know that Brian will ever find the correct balance, but as far as aggression losing us games... well I would rather have that then watching us lose in the fetal position.

Just laughing as I basically posted the same thing in another thread just minutes before reading your post.

Maybe Kirk will grow some ethical gonads and call it quits at the end of the season for the good of the program. Seriously how can he look his players in the face at the beginning of each season and tell them our goal is to win a Big Ten Championship this year. TOTALLY unrealistic.

Iowa alumni have to understand that they have an administration and a faculty and increasingly a student body that don't give two shits in a cup about Hawkeye athletics, the only time any coaches will get any attention is when there is a "problem",. Mediocrity is OK, how is our women's studies program doing and are we diverse enough are the concerns of this university. WE ARE......Illinois.

It's not being aggressive that's cost them, it's the fact that they can't seem to come up with playcalls that put their strengths up against the opponent's weakness consistently.

We have 2 of the best TE's in the country, and supposedly are a running team, but somehow we're shitty in the redzone??

It seems like they make these "aggressive" choices, and then just assume the other team will be so shocked that they won't play defense so the play they call (and their ability to execute it) doesn't matter.

Welcome to the party, pal

Good use of a movie line ...

You know the million dollar members?? And the U of I Prez would have a significant say in the matter.

Sadly enough I am afraid that this is apparently true. I just don’t get the thinking behind all the multiples of millions of dollars put into sports facilities just to have a pathetic attitude about the achievements in these programs. I don’t remember in the fifty years that I have followed Iowa sports ever seeing the two majors sports programs in this pathetic of condition at the same time. Barta your the man!!!!!!

Since the end of the 2015/2016 season Iowa sports has stopped being fun. Iowa football has officially become yet again become stale and stagnant. The promise of what could be done in the years following the historic Rose Bowl season has been completely wasted. Every time it looks like this program takes a step forward, they then follow that up by taking two steps back.

Hey, you remember this beauty?

Yeah, just last November you were pretty down on the Hawks.

Funny, that was almost at the end of that wonderful 5-year period where the Hawks had the 15th most wins in the P5, and the 10th most wins against P5 competition.

But there you are, "Apathy has set in".

Please, tell us again how impressive those wins were!

( and no, I don't expect you'll actually address this- dodge away! )

Meh, you found a post where I was blowing off steam the day after losing our 3rd game in a row. Believe it or not, if I came on here the day after the Michigan game, or Penn St. game I would have been ripping the staff and the players up and down. That is why I typically stay away from posting for several days after losses. After that Northwestern loss, I was very Apathetic, I felt the season was over. Luckily this is one of the few times I was ever wrong. I wasn't as apathetic as I thought and I loved destroying Illinois, beating Nebraska and then finishing off the season with a great bowl win over both a P5 and top 25 team.
