Any one else think the QB battle should be reopened after today?

If Bethard is ready to play. I think we should look at him. I like Jake but if he cant go deep we dont want three years of not being able to throw deep.

He can throw deep just fine. The problem is that receivers other than Powell have all sorts of trouble getting open on deep routes. KMM manages to get open all the time on the short and intermediate routes, and his injury hurt the offense in a big way.

I would love top see Beathard play. Ruddock is pretty good, but I loved the dual running threat that Beathard displayed. What if he is better than Ruddock? Our offense is not good, a running QB might be the spice we need.

Don't get me wrong Jake didn't play terrible today.. There was a lot of pressure in the back field all 2nd half, but the first half he missed two deep balls pretty bad, and did have a pretty awful pick. On top of that, the three and outs, and the secondary being mediocre just plain hurt. Yes, the running game/blocking just wasn't there today, but the plays were still there in the passing game.

The big thing I'm curious about is last week we saw Beathard throw an excellent deep ball, and he also showed he knows how to run the read option quite well. Yes, we have an extremely small showing of what CJ can do, but I think he showed enough last week to at least open up the battle in a game. I'm just curious what everyone thinks.. I would think against tOSU we have a game where we can try some things out no?

I like Jake, I think he is doing well for the most part, but he does need to work on his deep ball. He missed a wide open Cotton Saturday for what would've been a huge play.

Rudock is fine. It is the ultimate in armchair QB to want a change everytime a team loses. That would accomplish nothing.

If you're advocating opening up the QB battle, then maybe they ought to open up the OL battle at the same time, seeing how the OL got totally worked over yesterday. And don't forget the RB position while you're at it, because when a block was thrown, they didn't hit the right hole. Throw in the secondary, too. And FG kicker? Let's open it up to HS kickers. Not many bright spots yesterday, all around.

This. Amazing how QB is taking most of blame when it was the positions you mentioned above that were totally dominated by MSU. QB is the least of my concerns heading into the remainder of the BIG schedule.

I get the problems at WR, after Martin Manley went out Rudock struggled to find anyone open. But has everyone forgotten the first quarter when MSU stacked the box to stop the run? Rudock missed a couple of deep routes that, had he not over thrown, would have completely changed the game and opened up the run. But once MSU knew Iowa had given up on the run then those open deep routes were not there.

I only recall the one, and he just missed that one to Cotton.

Yeah, Rudock is a regular statue out there.

You're comparing Beathard's performance in mop-up against Western Michigan to Jake's against MSU, as if they were the only two players on the field and the teams they played against were identical in quality. Convince me that your thinking makes sense so I can join you in your funland; it looks pretty free-wheeling and whimsical from out here.

As I said I like everything about Jake except he hasnt showed me he can throw the deep ball. I have been saying that since week one. Maybe he can. But He hasnt shown it yet. He is probley still our best option at this time. But Bethard is going to catch up at learning the offense at some point

Beatherd threw one nice deep ball against Scrub U. Rudock's completion to Smith today was just as good IMO. Rudock missed Cotton by one step in the first half...a step, and that was into what wind their was, which was enough to affect a field goal.

People are just reaching for things here IMO, which is not uncommon after a disappointing loss. I can list six or seven other things that are far more pressing than this.

No Iowa QB will be successful if we don't have a balanced attack which leads to my question...

Is there any chance Beatheard could have helped with the rushing game with the zone read which would have led for more opportunities in the passing game?

I'm sure they're probably pretty even in terms of knowing the offense. They've both been in the system for the same amount of time. But while Beathard threw the one really nice deep ball against WMU, he didn't do anything else through the air. Rudock's precision on the short and intermediate throws is impressive, and his pocket presence (especially when combined with his well-above-average mobility) is exceptional. Those are the things that serve as real strengths for Rudock, where Beathard's only clear advantage right now is a stronger arm.

I still want to know why we just give "the look" of the read option? No one is buying it anymore and just sells out to get the running back. Rudock has had tons of chances to pick up big yards by keeping it, and I think he's way too savvy to have missed all of those reads. He can run very well but hasn't taken any of the opportunities given to him by the defense.

Agreed. Until he keeps it, they won't respect the "option" part of it.

GD renamed the play... Hawkeye Read, no option.

Not sure if that is worse or the playaction bootleg with no receivers on the side of the field of the bootleg.

Iowa plays in the Big Ten....the wind blows in the Midwest, almost every week. That means for half of the game, with Jake in there, Iowa has no deep threat, to stretch the defensive secondary. As we saw on Saturday, when Jake tried to go deep...we get picked. I think CJ has to get a look, cuz that wind is not going away....and if we do not at least threaten deep, our whole offense is too easy to defend. Bring in CJ as a surprise to OSU in the second qtr, against the wind, and go deep to Powell...

Rudock is the least of my concerns. Hard for any young QB to have a good game when the offense rushes for less then 30 yds. I'm more concerned that the Hawk Defense gave up big pass yardage to a very young/inexperienced QB. Doesn't bode well for our pass defense considering the passing attack's they will face the remainder of the season.
Look, dude, how is Rudock gonna pick up the slack? When their defense knows every play is pretty much a pass, when Iowa's secondary is so bad? We don't need a game manager at QB. We need offense.

the person that talked about cook getting benched against ND summed it up perfectly. It created a spark for their team and made him into THE leader of their offense.

This is an entirely fictional account of what happened. You have no idea if the ND benching had ANY impact on his performance against Iowa. More likely, they made a lot of progress during their bye week.
