Any one else think the QB battle should be reopened after today?

the question should be "could any QB win a game single handed with a average offensive line, no running game, and a weak receiving corps?"

Transplant (insert name of a pro bowl QB here) on this Iowa team and I'm not sure how many more wins iowa has this year, 1 or 2 more then they'd get with any current QB on the roster. No run = no win for Iowa.

This. Losing KMM hurt a lot, too. Not that he's an elite receiver, but we were definitely lacking a reliable target on a lot of third downs and Rudock has leaned very heavily on Kevonte so far in those situations.

I thought Jake played alright today nobody really played that good. Maybe if they open the QB position back up it will make Jake play a little harder

Offensively, everything has been covered. But offensively, it just looks like there was no plan if MSU took away the run. The offense looked lost, flat, and completely intimidated. The second pick Jake threw looked like "hey, we have no idea how to move the ball so let's throw this up for grabs and hope for the best'. Maybe we just don't have any talent offensively to compete, but I point my finger straight at an offensive staff that rarely finds ways to take advantage of either Iowa's strengths or the opponent's weaknesses. Great offensive coordinators can find ways to put players in positions to move the ball. To me, that was the biggest issue today.

Yeah, gosh, a terrific secondary anchored by an NFL corner, and receivers who rarely got separation, had nothing to do with it. If only we'd called the right plays.

Ok the hawks pretty much stunk it up today but I can't hold it all on them. When you play thug u. It's never good. When Powell got his helmet RIPPED OFF HIS HEAD I thought we were back playing basketball. This was Jr first real taste of what the big 10 is all about. Hopefully this is as bad as it gets and please HAWKEYES KEEP FIGHTING IT WILL GET BETTER. Ok so I'm a optimist.

I think Kirk and some here are just way way way too sensitive when it comes to a 20 year old's psyche. For some reason coaches across America and even Hayden, had no problem giving another qb a shot just to see what he's got. Now, we were all under the impression these 2 were neck and neck for the job. So Jake starting game 1 immediately overrules that initial analysis by the staff? I think it seems to with Kirk. Also, the very very very little time we've seen of CJ had us all thinking the same thing the coaches must have in the preseason, which is CJ can play.
Based on the way things have gone, and the way things could go the rest of the way here, it's likely CJ doesn't play meaningful minutes the rest of the way and I'll go further that this now goes through Jakes Senior season. Jake is now the starter by default until he graduates regardless of play.

But, but this is why Iowa won't win another game all year, you are pathetic.

I said when a team really only has one play maker on the team, and he's a wideout, it will be tough for Iowa to win another game if the qb can't throw a good deep ball to him.

I predicted they will win 5 games this season, so I do think they will win one more game.

Thanks for the name calling.

Yep, I officially gave up on G. Davis today.

I was one, of probably many, that thought he should have been fired last year.
This year, other than the horrible out call against NIU, I felt like he has a good grasp on play calling.
The run was never there, and we didn't continue to force it.
I thought Greg Davis called an OK game, but it felt like there were no adjustments at halftime (where have he heard that before?) from any position, coordinator or head coach.

The talents at receivers is not B1G level.
Iowa doesn't run an offense where WRs want to attend.
The game is changing where you need 3 quality WR starters.

I thought it was a mistake to let Erik Campbell walk away. (He's now a WR coach in the CFL.)

I thought it was interesting that MSU benched Cook at the end of the ND game. They obviously wanted a spark, and MAYBE they created one in Cook's mind/play.

We heard how Cook was upset he was pulled and he wasn't down on himself or his team, instead he showed a willingness to prove he's the man.

Do we not think the same thing could happen with Jake? Not saying you pull him every bad throw or whatever, but we needed a spark. We know what we have with our starters. Maybe bringing in someone from bench provides that spark, or it ticks off the starter to produce

Jake Rudock is the least of our problems. Maybe CJ could give us a spark but I'm not sure we should open that can of worms. I could have won more games as the Hawkeyes coach last year by simply pulling JVB and starting JR. The biggest difference between this year and last year is the play of the quarterback mainly JR's calmness in the pocket.

As far as 2001 is concerned we absolutely should have replaced McCann with Banks. Whether he's "ready" or not you absolutely play Banks who made plays with his legs when things broke down as opposed to McCann who tended to curl up into the fetal position.

One of Kirks weaknesses is his loyalty to his starters and heir apparents as opposed to playing a player who just makes plays ie Banks and Rudock (who also has made plenty of plays with his legs).

JM is right: Rudock did not see the field last year because the O was such a mess, it would only have had a negative impact on JR. Sometimes, having no experience is better than a couple of bad experiences. Secondly, I have not read one thing in this post to confirm that JR cannot throw the long ball or that he does not have a strong arm. My admittedly amateur observations are that he has pretty good arm strength and that I have not really seen him throw deep enough times to make a judgment. Maybe some of you should join me. If JR had the time to throw that the MSU QB had on Saturday, and maybe a couple of their receivers, or even a healthy Martin-Manley, I would bet his production would have been more impressive. And, wow, I am really surprised that an inexperienced QB was made to look bad AT TIMES by the best defense in the BT...go figure!

Don't get me wrong Jake didn't play terrible today.. There was a lot of pressure in the back field all 2nd half, but the first half he missed two deep balls pretty bad, and did have a pretty awful pick. On top of that, the three and outs, and the secondary being mediocre just plain hurt. Yes, the running game/blocking just wasn't there today, but the plays were still there in the passing game.

The big thing I'm curious about is last week we saw Beathard throw an excellent deep ball, and he also showed he knows how to run the read option quite well. Yes, we have an extremely small showing of what CJ can do, but I think he showed enough last week to at least open up the battle in a game. I'm just curious what everyone thinks.. I would think against tOSU we have a game where we can try some things out no?

Are you crazy this thing is all on NO TALENT AT THE WIDE OUT POSITION. We simply cannot compete against mediocre defenses with no talent at the wide out positions let alone against a top defense like MSU. QB is not our concern...defense on field for too long led to points by their offense. Jake is the real deal!

I just think its funny how we went from "Rudock is going to be the best QB since Long" to "Rudock is crap; time to move on to the backups" after one game where we were missing our top RB and WR against a top ten defense. The people on this board go up and down after wins and losses so much its getting to be some good comedy.

not a single person has said anything like this in the thread.. the person that talked about cook getting benched against ND summed it up perfectly. It created a spark for their team and made him into THE leader of their offense. Now, maybe they rotate some drives against tOSU if things aren't going well and Beathard creates that spark? Maybe Jake sitting on the bench makes him a stronger leader because he doesn't ever want to be in that position again.

If you're advocating opening up the QB battle, then maybe they ought to open up the OL battle at the same time, seeing how the OL got totally worked over yesterday. And don't forget the RB position while you're at it, because when a block was thrown, they didn't hit the right hole. Throw in the secondary, too. And FG kicker? Let's open it up to HS kickers. Not many bright spots yesterday, all around.

The problem is that considering Rudock got little, if any, help from the rest of the offense, he played very well. You open up the competition when a guy isn't playing well. You don't do it when a guy actually does a solid job when everything around him was failing.

If the WR could get any separation and create openings that would help. On his two picks there was nobody open and he should not have thrown them. He missed Cotton (barely). A new QB is not going to change the WR abilities to get open. Btw, Rudock's pass to CJF was absolutely perfect placement.
