Any one else think the QB battle should be reopened after today?

As I said I like everything about Jake except he hasnt showed me he can throw the deep ball. I have been saying that since week one. Maybe he can. But He hasnt shown it yet. He is probley still our best option at this time. But Bethard is going to catch up at learning the offense at some point

He has made nice throws on the Kittle wheel route and Powell TD against WMU.

Iowa plays in the Big Ten....the wind blows in the Midwest, almost every week. That means for half of the game, with Jake in there, Iowa has no deep threat, to stretch the defensive secondary. As we saw on Saturday, when Jake tried to go deep...we get picked. I think CJ has to get a look, cuz that wind is not going away....and if we do not at least threaten deep, our whole offense is too easy to defend. Bring in CJ as a surprise to OSU in the second qtr, against the wind, and go deep to Powell...

Rudock overthrew Cotton, who was running into the wind, on a deep route. He also threw an excellent ball to Smith, although not into the wind (which was barely noticeable, anyway). The first pick was bad, I'll grant you. But the second one wasn't underthrown. He should have throw to Powell's outside shoulder, because Dennard had inside position and therefore had the best play on a ball thrown inside. Honestly, it looked like Dennard knew exactly what Powell was going to be doing, and that knowledge and the work he did at the LOS led to him having excellent position to play the ball. The throw itself had plenty of distance; it just wasn't thrown where it needed to be for Powell to have a play on it.

So Iowa fans are gonna stick with Rudock, throw their hands up in the air with the knowledge that Iowa will have an, at best, .500 season and say, "Oh well". Oh well, Iowa fans....

Yeah, I guess so. You know, since Rudock isn't the ******* problem.

Who are you gonna blame when the offense doesn't produce? Davis?

The offensive line got owned all day long, receivers still don't get open with much consistency. The former leads to no running game, and both serve to limit the passing game. Yet Rudock still had an okay day through the air.

Is he going to win the game for you when pretty much no one else is doing their jobs on offense? No. But neither will Beathard, or any other quarterback, for that matter.

I dont think they have been in the program the same amount of time. I do agree with the things you said JR does well. The kid does a lot of things well. and as another poster said he made a nice deep throw to Smith. He has had 2 or 3 good deep throws seems like he has missed on 5 or 6.
I'm sure they're probably pretty even in terms of knowing the offense. They've both been in the system for the same amount of time. But while Beathard threw the one really nice deep ball against WMU, he didn't do anything else through the air. Rudock's precision on the short and intermediate throws is impressive, and his pocket presence (especially when combined with his well-above-average mobility) is exceptional. Those are the things that serve as real strengths for Rudock, where Beathard's only clear advantage right now is a stronger arm.

Rudock has been in the program longer, but he spent his first year with KOK. Beathard was on campus last year, so he's been with Davis just as long as Rudock has.

I haven't read all 8 pages of this thread so sorry if someone has already said this. I think Rudock is and should be secure as the starter until he proves otherwise and I don't think he's done anything like that, this season. What I would like to see is a gameplan that includes a series or 2 per half for for Beathard and featuring the read option with Canzeri in the backfield. At this point I'd rather get beat by OSU by 50 and trying to be creative and finding an edge than losing by 17 playing it close to the vest and limiting game possessions. Who knows, maybe it works against NW or Wisky?

NO, Beathard provides more offense. Plain and simple. Of course, one has to rememeber Ferentz's 'girdle' on offense.
Beathard can both run the ball and consistantly throw the deep ball.. things Rudock cannot do well. Of course, there's that 'girdle', again.

Beathard can both run the ball and consistantly throw the deep ball.. something Rudock cannot.

Rudock can also run the ball. Also, since when did "consistently" mean, "he did it once"?

Consistantly means Beathard can throw the deep ball with accuracy. Rudock, not so much. We've seen plenty of that evidence. What's Beathard's evidence of accuracy with the deep ball? In a 7? minute span Beathard had two long balls (at least 25 yards) that were accurate.

IO'M TOTALLY WITH YOU HOMERCHUMLESS! KIRK PLAYS THE WORSE PLAYER ALL THE TIME AND I CAN'T STAND FOR IT!!!! BEATHARD IS OBVIOUSLYU BETTER, HE HAD THAT ONE PASS THAT ONE TIME.

Don't get me wrong Jake didn't play terrible today.. There was a lot of pressure in the back field all 2nd half, but the first half he missed two deep balls pretty bad, and did have a pretty awful pick. On top of that, the three and outs, and the secondary being mediocre just plain hurt. Yes, the running game/blocking just wasn't there today, but the plays were still there in the passing game.

The big thing I'm curious about is last week we saw Beathard throw an excellent deep ball, and he also showed he knows how to run the read option quite well. Yes, we have an extremely small showing of what CJ can do, but I think he showed enough last week to at least open up the battle in a game. I'm just curious what everyone thinks.. I would think against tOSU we have a game where we can try some things out no?

No. We have enough of a battle with the punt return team coming up during the bye week, one would hope.

Not to mention some serious tackling drills that need to take place.

On the bright side, we got O$U right where we want 'em: game two of our losing streak.

Are you really so dense that you don't know the definition of consistency? Throwing a deep ball accurately, ONE TIME, is not doing so consistently. Throwing a consistently good deep ball means you've done it on several occasions. One throw is not an adequate sample to determine consistency.

As to Beathard's two accurate long balls in a 7-minute span? He was 1-3 against WMU.

I guess you're consistently bad at math.

Northwestern has plays for both their talented quarterbacks. From what I've seen from Beathard.. I'm not sure the Hawks shouldn't be doing something similar to at least attempt to open up the damn run game.
