Is Hawkeye Nation the medium, or the sum of it's posters?

Hawkeye Nation as a medium is useful tool and resource, much like Twitter, Facebook, the interwebs, and television. It is how the users decide to use the tool is where the good/bad debate comes into play. For years people have called television bad and blamed it for all of societies ills.

While I would have preferred AW not respond, I certainly have no problem with how he handled it, and I back his decision as a fan. For the trolls saying it is a reflection of his coach, I say good. I like the fact that Fran will stick up for his guys. Too many coaches are way too willing to throw anybody under the bus to save their own hide.

Just my opinion.

The main difference is the posters on this site don't play for the team (unless you are a team player posting here) and are not on scholarship. The posters are not bound to the team rules. This medium is in a different context for fans because it is a message board for the fans of Iowa sports. The players represent an image to the University and their actions reflect upon it. It is not a one sized fits all answer comparing posters and current players in how they use social media.

While I don't have a Twitter account, there is this little thing called "Ban" that you can use to not see all the negative posts. Maybe it's just a training issue?
 
Seems to me that if you restrict your Twitter/Facebook account to your actual friends and family, you wouldn't get some whacko posting junk about you. Why do these players accept friend requests from anonymous users and unknown strangers. Why do they need their twitter posts to be public for the whole world to see. There are tools available that restrict who can see your posts/follow you. I don't get the need for thousands of friends/followers you don't even know. Responding to an anonymous post is stupidity.

They were both called out by ISU fans and the University and PD, disciplined them both.
