Aaron White tweet today

The majority of people in society work hard, spend time with their families, have multiple hobbies/interests and live busy lives. They enjoy sports & supporting their favorite teams in their free time. They have values, respect sportsmanship and can appreciate the efforts of players - win or lose. Winning is a bonus that instills pride and good feelings. These people represent 98% of the fan base. They are the ones who fill the stadiums/arenas, make TV ratings soar and donate their time or money. They talk sports among their familys/friends/coworkers etc. People who are content or mostly content don't feel compelled to speak out nor do they care to spend time expressing themselves to strangers.

The root problem with social media/message boards etc. is it provides a platform for the negative/extremist point of view. The gamblers who lost their bet, the folks with drinking/drug problems, the sky is falling negative folks, societies deviants who enjoy disruption, the outcasts who noone will listen to, etc. They all get to spew to an audience that never used to be available to them. They can spread rumors, lies, stories and pretend their opinions are mainstream, simply because 98% of the world isn't here to shut them down. Most of the live chat rooms on the internet were forced to shut down. All forums have to be moderated. It's the nature of the beast I guess, but sad that the few can always ruin things for the majority.

What amazes me is that McCabe/White/Jok/Woodbury etc. are responding in any way to the half a dozen idiots out there and calling them fans. What's gotten into these players heads? The entire state of Iowa was thrilled by their performance this year. Why are they trolling the internet looking for a pat on the back/headlines. My kids were taught in grade school and are still taught every year how to safely & intelligiently use social media. There will always be people who are able to find fault with & criticize anything. An intelligient person learns from criticism, uses it as motivation or ignores it when it's irrational. I think the Iowa players need a class in something and I'd agree Fran should ban all social media at least until the players display more maturity.

Excellent post BOP. You should post more often! I could not agree more with everything that you said.

It isn't just Iowa that has those 2%'s in the fan base who feel they have the right to send players raunchy messages. I would be willing to bet every single major university in the country has idiots like that. Why the Iowa players seem to let those 2%'s comments get to them is beyond me. They have got to have a filter. Many, many, more people in this world have to deal with worse things than random hate mail. You're living a sweet life as a D1 college athlete. Deal with it and move on.

Speaking to the bolded, maybe they have just never experienced irrational criticism before and they need to go through the learning curve of how to deal with it. Most of these kids have been celebrated their whole lives, especially by strangers from their communities who may have treated them like gods. They've never had someone that is supposedly a big fan tear them down. I would say learning how to ignore the rabble is an important skill, but not something that most kids are born with.

Just like at how ISU fans treated their massive freshman bust, Matt Thomas. He had to delete his twitter during the season because of how many people were criticizing him.

Amazes me how a fanbase could turn on a kid who was the best high school shooter in the country his senior year.

I'd be more concerned about the team having that kind of meltdown without some off the field situation.

I'm also willing to bet that all other major colleges who's athletes get hounded with stupidity, said athletes respond as such, as they should. We don't follow, so we don't know.

You ppl that say he should take the high road and just not respond need to wake up. Just imagine rumors like such going around about you or your kids being played at this magnitude. I've seen White numerous times since this stupid rumor thing has been out there and what is the first thing everyone starts whispering about? Saying it as a fact.

Dude squashed it as he should. Short n sweet.

Pat, just to clarify I believe I said in an earlier post in this thread that I don't have a problem with anything White said in his tweet. I don't blame him for squashing that rumor one bit.

My only point is that it looks as if this team is letting things get to them that are totally out of their control. The coaches need to take care of that. If that means banning Twitter then ban Twitter for God's sake. Who really gives a crap about Twitter? If it saves the players from stupid run-ins with the lunatic fans then so be it. If they can't ignore what's being said to them then I think banning it is what's best. Again, I understand what White said, and have no problem with it. All of this stuff is such nonsense and the players shouldn't be worrying one iota about things morons are saying to them. I guess I just feel like they should focus on things that are in their control, and block the rest out. There are many, many, other players in the country dealing with similar hate mail. Just let it go.

It seems these players let distractions affect them more than usual.. although not sure how one determines what is normal.

The trouble with the 1-2%'ers out there that spew the completely negative trash, is that they are usually the most vocal about it and have no trouble spouting off about it directly. The vast majority of the people are the ones who remain silent about it, at least on social media, and if they do say anything on social media, it's rarely tweeted right to the person.

The fringe folks are trying the "if I say it loud enough, and enough times, eventually people will believe me or it will come true" strategy.

Imagine if everybody who had an opinion or thought tweeted it directly to each of the players. While the positives would outweigh the negatives, I'd guess, the sheer volume of tweets would probably be just as bad.

It seems Iowa boards have more ISU trolls pretending to be Iowa fans than normal too.

What's funny is that the source of the White tweet is an UofI student and obviously a fan of the Hawks. ISU wouldn't be in this discussion at all if an Iowan poster here didn't blindly and incorrectly blame them. This poster is also considered a top troll on CF, so it also works both ways.

Exactly! I'd swing a mean ban hammer if it was my choice. No benefit to providing a mainstream voice to irrational behavior/opinions.

You ppl that say he should take the high road and just not respond need to wake up.

So, if I create 100 anonymous accounts, name them HawkFan1, HawkFan2 etc., and bombard you every single day with 100's of nonsense rumors/lies/nastiness, you will be focused on & spend every minute of every day defending yourself & shutting this down. You'd be fighting fiction. Where would you be years from now if it never stopped? Would you believe these were true fans saying these things? Would you think everyone whispered behind your back about it? Your logic completely escapes me.

Did what he had to do, that's all there is to it, and did it with class and restraint.....
