Aaron White tweet today

Our players us vs the fans mentality has been weird all year. Sports aren't hard. If you win, fans like you, if you lose they don't. And honestly, as an athlete or even just as an individual it really shouldn't matter who cheers for you or what people do in response to you. People should try to do things for themselves.

Even with the stupid rumors if they didn't happen just live knowing that they didn't happen and go **** some hot chicks and party a lot like every other ******* college basketball player does and stay off of Twitter. Internet conversation is for nerds like me.

My question is, can you be sued and lose for defaming someone else on a social media site? And if you think you're account is untraceable that's flat out dumb unless you're using your companies vpn or using the tor network or something like that. But I would assume the people dumb enough to make statements threatening or defaming someone else, probably aren't smart enough to use tools like the above mentioned to keep their account anonymous and therefore would easily be traceable. Just using a fake name wouldn't cut it imo. I guess if I were Aaron's parent, i'd consider suing.

I think you can.

Absolutely.

Again, not good PR on White's end posting this. It reeks of kind of bantering back and forth with the fan base/rival fan bases and makes it look what the community is saying is getting into their heads. .

Were I a coach, I would seriously think of banning twitter and facebook...because one day my players might realize it was for their own good....I can't imagine having this level of notoriety at their ages. So yes, I'd ban it like Kirk does.

I agree. Whether or not these guys are in the age group that uses twitter I can't imagine it being that big of a deal. They are division one athletes in a fish bowl community. They live like gods in Iowa City. Losing the ability to tweet should mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. If I were a coach and a recruit told me that the ability to tweet is one of their priorities when picking a school then quite frankly I'd tell them to look elsewhere, whether or not I had banned twitter.

With that said, nothing AW said in his tweet was inappropriate. I have absolutely zero problem with him squashing a rampant idiotic rumor with one simple and to the point tweet. Those of you bashing him for it are hilarious. What McCabe said was completely inappropriate. What AW said was totally understandable.

This is my question. Not that I think it'd be a good move for AW to brand himselt a litigant at the ripe old age of 22 or whatever age he is, but I honestly think we need a few high profile cases of college kids having their financial futures devastated to set an example of dangers of twitter.

It is not that I blame White for feeling they way he does if things are being said that are not true. But, trying to discuss/argue team problems on the internet with total strangers to me seems likes a lose lose situation. Let the figure heads of the program discuss team issues (head coach, AD).

All these rumors need 2 end. Nothing happened between teammates or girlfriends. The season ended bcuz of our play.Simple. Yall need to chill

The bolded part I think is the most questionable and is where this us vs fan base mentality is coming out. I think others are saying here, you don't want to put out questionable comments that might be taken the wrong way. And taking everything into consideration with what has happened with twitter this year with the team....commenting to random people on the internet about team issues does not seem like a smart move at all PR wise.

Let Fran clear the air. That is his job and what he is being paid for.

Don't know if I trust Whitey on this one, heard from a pretty reliable third hand frat bro source that there was definitely a female involved.

He isn't discussing or arguing with anyone. Did the debate go on? It seems to me like he got tired of hearing the ridiculous rumors and decided to put them to rest with a simple tweet. He kept it respectful and he made his point. I don't do twitter so I have no idea, but if he did waste his time arguing with folks then I would understand where you are coming from. It just seems to me like you and a few others are making a big deal about him simply squashing a rumor that has been floating around for a couple weeks. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I'm sitting here shaking my head at myself over the fact we're debating over a completely appropriate tweet from a college kid who wants people to quit slandering him. Have to admit I'm slightly embarrassed. This whole Twitter thing is insanely stupid.

There's a reason that football players are banned from twitter during their entire stay at Iowa. It's because of crap like this. There are some things I disagree with Ferentz on, but this isn't one of them. If I were Fran, I'd institute the same policy for the basketball team.

To each his own and I respect your opinion. I just think it should come from the head coach, not him or other players. And, I to would support a social media ban for players with representing the university...whether it be during the season or in the off season....players need to stay off of it. Call it old school, but I think it is for the best overall.

Is it Twitter that is out of control? Or the users of Twitter that are out of control?

Whenever you have a form of communication that people can use without tying their name/reputation to what they are saying you're going to attract idiots. We've seen it on these message boards for years. The fact it's on twitter is far from suprising, but that doesn't make it any less unfortunate.

When phones were invented people placed prank calls. I'm sure people created fake email addresses and sent raunchy messages behind them when that became a possibility. There has always been trolls on message boards. Now facebook and twitter are next "thing" and it has only become easier for idiots to do what they do best.

The only way to prevent this kind of nonsense is to put an end to it.
