He is awesome(crazy educated, successful, and ine of the hardest working humans I've ever known, he 100% believes in individual responsibility). With all of that he emphatically states luck and fortune also played a role in him getting where he is, and that with miniscule changes, it could have been wildly different outcome. He's been shot, in a gang, arrested. Ironically, he credits an old, retiring, racist Irish police officer as his saving grace, who he became great friend with. Its a story for Hollywood its so surreal

He helped me understand, well...as much as a white, middle aged, straight, upper middle income, male, who grew up in rural Iowa with both parents, in a lower income family, and has only lived in small towns or the suburbs of a mid sized city...can possibly understand....

In the end, unless you subscribe to the idea that black folks are simply somehow genetically predisposed to violence, crime, laziness, etc.... (which would be the definition of racist)..... You ultimately will come to the conclusion that the plight of inner city black communities was not solely their own doing.

Btw, I also have a friend from Miami (which makes sense since I live not far from there). My friend grew up in Cuba. The other day we were talking and he fell into a thousand-yard stare.

You know, George Washington once said that having just two political parties is a bad idea. Man did that turn out to be prophetic. Look at all the years that congress couldn’t get nothing done because one party would always shut down other one. I think we need a multi-partied system to get through the gridlocks. Each political party would have to seek the backing of other parties and create a dialog instead of taking up staunch stances thereby not get anything done. It would have to be an odd number of parties and has to be at least 5-7 parties involved. Also each party would have their own presidential candidate and give Americans a better choice of candidates.

And while we’re at it, get rid of lobbyists too. Serving special interests groups is not serving the American people. They also need to overhaul the FDA, the EPA, the IRS. They need to get rid of the DEA and fold them into the FBI and the U.S. Marshals. We need to go back in the law books and get rid of old outdated laws and get them off the books. The Education system needs to be overhauled and start teaching how to balance a checkbook, and how to save and invest money.

Im sure there are a lot of other federal offices that need to get a hard look at too. It’s time we balance the budget and get American out of debt, but not by taxing us to death, but by controlling and managing our spending.

George Raveling and C Vivian Stringer have both gone on the record and said they felt appreciated, but not necessarily comfortable living day to day in Iowa City. And that was over thirty years ago. And look what they left behind-a dream team in Raveling's case and expert medical care for a severely challenged daughter in Stringer's.

Several years after he left out of frustration, Raveling actually came out and basically apologized for what he thought was an overreaction on his part. I don't recall the exact quote, but he basically intimated that his perception of the Iowa community's treatment of him as a coach was due more to his own immaturity than implied racism.

I'm not sure he is totally correct, but I applauded him at the time for stepping up and admitting that. It had to take some courage on his part.

I can't remember exactly, but I think he mentioned something about the inability to find a place to get a haircut. And the killer was the decision to wear sweatsuits on the sidelines. I think he was looking for a reason to bolt and a certain part of the fanbase wanted him gone......it was a perfect storm.

It is very possible he just used that as an excuse to move on to something he thought might be better for him. I mean he was fairly young. USC and the west coast, ocean!!

I'm sure there was a myriad of reasons that he wanted to move on, and, yes, a good portion of the fan base was ready to move on as well, as his recruiting prowess wasn't matching on-court results.

I don't recall the specifics, but shortly after he left he said something that intimated that he was pushed out because of race, only later to recant that, claiming that part of his frustration derived more from immaturity than the reality of what was happening.

I personally don't think he was much of a floor coach, but I respected his mea culpa. That's not to imply that he wasn't a victim at some level of racism, but it does show how reality can be distorted by perception, something that is all too prevalent right now.
