2016 Recruiting Over/Under - 9 Two Stars; 1 Four Star

It's obvious that stars do matter. Every year the best programs get the highest star recruits which usually translates to the best teams. It's hard to argue with that. Even the article that says star rankings are based upon who is recruiting the player doesn't mean it's "bogus". It just means that they are assuming that the best teams are doing their jobs in recruiting and decided this player is what they want (over time these programs establish a reputation of being able to find top end talent) So I don't think it's outlandish to have that be an affect on star ratings.

With that being said, I don't think you should put ALL your chips in on the star ratings... This program has shown many times they are able to see talent or players that will excel in our system and (given time) will develop to be able to compete at the same level.

I think dean drilled the nail on the head when he said it's the coaching staff's game day decisions that hinder us more than the recruiting itself. Now, would more "talented" players counter act boneheaded decisions? Possibly. I don't see how it can hurt us.

I've watched a few highlight tapes and I realize they are just highlight tapes but so far I like what I have been seeing. It appears to be a growing athletic class that will help build for the future.
I think this is a well thought out post, and I tend to agree. I will say however, that Iowa has put more people in the NFL then a lot of other schools, but that has not necessarily translated into wins on the field. So we have had talent, but game day coaching has hurt us. The one area where I feel we could use better recruiting is with our skill positions, particularly wide receiver. Game changing receivers make a huge difference in today's game.

Yep...they've apparently told him they are full at DB right now and to hold off on committing

His older brother was a highly touted OL that originally verballed to OK but then changed his mind and opted for UCLA. Sounds like older brother has been hoping younger brother would join him at UCLA. Might explain UCLA's interest in offering. A few comments from his older brother in the below piece about pairing up with his brother. Might wonder if Iowa could hold him until next Feb. if his brother is working on him through it all.

I am at a point where I just don't trust this staff on coming up with an original game plan, or making good decisions during game day coaching. I think this coaching staff flat out loses more games, or make more games competitive than ever should happen. I give them an F- on this front.

I am not at a point where I think this staff can't recognize talent. They have just proven too many times that they can recognizing NFL type talent where others just flat out miss it. There is a reason this program has put so many 2* and 3* kids into the NFL, and it ain't because the players all of a sudden gain NFL talent after they come to Iowa (it was always there). They are finding a kid that has that potential and they see it, and they sign it, where other programs just don't see it. They they do a good job of teaching the fundamentals, and then the inherent NFL talent (that was always there) comes out, and they get a shot at playing in the NFL.

Lets just look at the 2* DB that Phil Parker has coached and gotten into the NFL for instance:
Godfrey, Fletcher, Spievey, Hyde, Paschal

Here are some others that didn't make the NFL, but were great DB's at Iowa and were 2* kids:
Jovan Johnson, Greenwood, Miller, Lowdermilk

Now we have King who was also a 2* kid. When it happens this often, it ain't a fluke.

Jovan Johnson didn't make the NFL, but he has had a great run in the CFL even garnering defensive player of the year 2011.

Apparently he verbally committed to Iowa earlier today:

IowaLaw and 68 are Cyclone trolls. Well disguised. Miller lets 'em hang out because people take the bait and the "hits" go up. Iowa could go 10-2 this year and they would find fault with it.

Something tells me your application to the mensa society was rejected.. Tell you what. How bout we both email the Iowa Athletic Dept. and post the response detailing what exactly we've both done in support of Iowa sports? The loser - YOU - goes away.

Some of us just aren't useless lap dogs that bend over and accept all the ineptness and idiocy Ferentz and Barta give us under the guise of being "true" fans.

Put up of stfu.

nice try.

Hmmm, I notice that this thread has been viewed 3,000 times, yet not one person has answered the OP's two very simple, straight forward questions. AKA, will this year's "stellar" class have the highest number of 2 star commits this decade? Will we manage to get a single 4 star commit out of 25 open schollies...when 13 other Big 10 teams have already landed a blue chipper?

We currently sit at 20 commits, with 7 of them being 2 stars (tied for the most this decade). We still have 5 schollys to go. Zero commits from Georgia, Florida, or Texas...despite spending considerable resources down there and Wallace's claim to have connections down there (who doesn't think he used that in his interview for the job??). Isn't that LeVar Woods and Greg Davis' recruiting territory? Are they doing their jobs?

Some seem pretty excited about the way recruiting has been going this year. They are quick to congratulate Seth Wallace for his "offer first ask questions later" method. We have more offers and commits in June than ever before, and tout a Top 30 rivals.com recruiting rating.

The rest of us fear that the quality of this recruiting class is deteriorating right before our eyes. According to Rivals, next year's class, which has about 10 schollies left to fill, already contains MORE 2 star recruits than we had total in 2010, 2011, and 2013!). We are also trending downward when it comes to landing blue chip recruits. 0 of our 16 commits are 4 stars or higher, and overall, only 1 of our last 41 commits have been 4 star.

I'll make a very conservative over/under to see who puts their money where their mouth is on this supposed "recruiting momentum" that Kirk and crew are generating. First, who believes we end up with under 9 two star recruits (which would still be the highest number this decade)? I am betting OVER. Who is betting that we end up with more than one 4 star commit (which is still less than 2010, 2011, and 2012). I am betting UNDER.

For comparison:

2016 - 6 two stars; 0 four stars
2015 - 7 two stars; 1 four stars [Daniels]
2014 - 7 two stars; 2 four stars [Scheel, Wiegers]
2013 - 5 two stars; 0 four stars
2012 - 5 two stars; 4 four stars [Garmon, Ekakatie, Ward, Johnson]
2011 - 5 two stars; 4 four stars [Walsh, Hamilton, Coe, Blythe]
2010 - 5 two stars; 4 four stars [Coker, Derby (NFL), Donnal (NFL), Fiedorowicz (NFL)]

What "rating service" counts? If you take a composit average of all the services we only have one 2* commit and that is Shulte. Keep in mind that is the average of all the service, not just their best ranking out of all of them.

Maybe be take a hint that when 3000 people view your thread and ignore your bullsh1t premise.

Because of the way the star system works there's no way to really guess who will end up still being a 3 star after their senior season. For example nobody had seen any tape on 0 star Billings until he committed to Iowa. He was switched to a 3 star with a ranking that same evening. Does that make him a better player? Like Hawkeyegamefilm said, guys who show some ability in their junior year generally show good improvement in their senior year. We'll just have to see if the staff zeroed in on guys who continue to develop. Now that they're committed and on the recruiting service's radar, a good season by a 2 star player could get them bumped in the star rankings. I anticipate that'll be the case with some of these current 2 star guys.

I could spout off a number but it'd just be a guess so who really cares. Ummm lets say Iowa ends up with four 2 star commits.

Your reply is something a coward would say. You can play too Walker. You have to just quit running your mouth and accept. You won't though. You'll just make up a reason and try to deflect from the fact that your contribution to Iowa Sports is posting on message boards and snuggling with your Kirk Ferentz bobblehead every night.

Happy 4th coward.

LOL!! Dean - do us all a favor and stop posting...ever! You are embarrassing yourself over and over again.

Bernstein did nothing? Hmmm, he was all Big 10 and did enough to get drafted in the 7th round by the Redskins. 4 star flop?
Weigher did nothing? Hmmmm, he holds the U of Iowa freshmen rushing record, and rushed for almost 3000 yrds last year. He's a Carolina Panther. 4 star flop?
Coker did nothing? Hmmm. MVP of our last bowl game win. Was Big 10's 2nd leading rusher in 2011. 4 star flop?
Davis did nothing? Hmmmm. He led the team in receiving his jr and sr year. 4 star flop?

You are a bafoon. Stop responding to my posts. Keep being thrilled with 2 star recruits because 1/1000 could be bob sanders, while most will be Reid Seilbys and Connor Kornbraths. We don't want 4 stars, that's why we don't get them.

OMG, you are a joke dude.

Of the 4* kids you listed, literally 1/3 of them did nothing for the Hawks (Bernstein, Weigher, Coker, Derby) or little (Davis, Hamilton)

Davis's junior year was McNutt's senior year. I didn't google stats but I'm gunna go out on a limb and say Davis didn't lead the team in receiving his junior year.

Another attack a troll would post. Not sure what in the blue hell you are trying to say, but your contribution to Iowa Sports seems to be posting on message boards and hating everything Iowa sports related. Super brave.

Happy 4th poopy pants. It's a build-a-bear KF doll btw.

Your kind is the absolute worst there is. ALL you do is attack first and drop names and then when someone fires back you whine like a 4 year old.

The original bet still stands whenever you are ready Walker. One email to the Athletic Dept. is all it takes.

I'll be waiting........but won't hold my breath.

See, I disagree. I, and I think most others on here, would say your kind is the worst on here. I'm sure a few love your posts...for example, I bet iowalaw likes a bunch of your posts...lol, now that says something.

I attack first? All you do is b!tch and moan and attack. You whine everytime your called out on your constant negative posting. Find and repost a couole post where you haven't been negative...yeah...thought so.

I've never said you were a clown troll, I've said your a miserable, pissy pants Hawkeye fan who us a troll on here. I have no doubt you spend loads of money, and then come here to cry. Congrats. So I concede super fan, your still miserable and I'll continue to call you out on it.

Quite simply, I'll be here long after your gone, and I'll be here when you come back with another alt.

Everyone, I mean everyone is well away of the glaring weaknesses of Iowa football and of KF (barring Hawknick and hawkistate, Lord bless'em). We need to see some improvements this year, and trends toward more improvements going forward . '10, '12, '14 were very dissappointing to awful.

I don't deny I've been a fan of KF overall and defended him in the past, with his warts and all, and I don't apologize that up until maybe last year, I've thought the pros out way the cons, overall. I also am very tired of losing to bad teams, pisssing away leads, and overly predictable offense.

Please, feel free to be critical of KF, Davis, Barta, etc. It's warranted. Cut off what I am sure is magnificent financial support. If things don't improve, and quick, I am sure we'll have a change soon.

Buck up champ.

You don't like my posts, ignore me. Pretty simple.

I'm done with you for now.

Peace.

I've noticed most Hawkeye fans have up voted a post at least once during their time here. 68 has 0 up votes so he's either a troll or he doesn't think anybody has ever said anything that he agrees with. Either way it doesn't say much for 68. I'm sure he'll have a reason for this which he'll believe.

Just when you think you've read the stupidest thing on here the bar gets lowered. The reason I don't "vote up" posts is because the likes/dislikes options on these boards are RIDICULOUS.

If I see a post I agree or disagree with I can respond to it directly. Just as if I was having a face to face discussion with someone. I don't have to use some cheesy, passive-aggressive, internet button to express my feelings. I'll leave that to the likes of you.

The fact that you think this has some symbolism one way or another doesn't say much for you.
