2016 Recruiting Over/Under - 9 Two Stars; 1 Four Star

Some seem pretty excited about the way recruiting has been going this year. They are quick to congratulate Seth Wallace for his "offer first ask questions later" method. We have more offers and commits in June than ever before, and tout a Top 30 rivals.com recruiting rating.

The rest of us fear that the quality of this recruiting class is deteriorating right before our eyes. According to Rivals, next year's class, which has about 10 schollies left to fill, already contains MORE 2 star recruits than we had total in 2010, 2011, and 2013!). We are also trending downward when it comes to landing blue chip recruits. 0 of our 16 commits are 4 stars or higher, and overall, only 1 of our last 41 commits have been 4 star.

I'll make a very conservative over/under to see who puts their money where their mouth is on this supposed "recruiting momentum" that Kirk and crew are generating. First, who believes we end up with under 9 two star recruits (which would still be the highest number this decade)? I am betting OVER. Who is betting that we end up with more than one 4 star commit (which is still less than 2010, 2011, and 2012). I am betting UNDER.

For comparison:

2016 - 6 two stars; 0 four stars
2015 - 7 two stars; 1 four stars [Daniels]
2014 - 7 two stars; 2 four stars [Scheel, Wiegers]
2013 - 5 two stars; 0 four stars
2012 - 5 two stars; 4 four stars [Garmon, Ekakatie, Ward, Johnson]
2011 - 5 two stars; 4 four stars [Walsh, Hamilton, Coe, Blythe]
2010 - 5 two stars; 4 four stars [Coker, Derby (NFL), Donnal (NFL), Fiedorowicz (NFL)]

This is NEWs?! I'm Ron Burgundy?! There's been an eon worth of analysis by 50% of the people on here about this. Kirk, and his system, are so long in the tooth it's beyond repair. We can only hope he has the LONG overdue foresight to direct his direct reports to mix stuff up, break habits and let's get this thing moving forward before I retire in 4 years. I think at one point when Davis was trying to run more plays someone asked KF about that and his comment was something to the effect that we wouldn't go to an ORegon type hurry up because we still want to play Defense. WHAT!!!!!!!!? Is he really that out of touch? I think every potential playmaker we've had the past few years, and there have been very few, he's managed to run off. His handling of the Willies deal....the handling of Adam Robinson's concussion.

And BTW no serious 5 star or now it looks like 4 star athletes save an OLman will come to Iowa. We get very few recruits anymore that are offered by Big 5 teams we get the highly coveted MAC specials. Maybe Kirk should go coach in the MAC. OOps they play a wide open gun slinging offense...he would have a losing record there too.

We have a new commit in the fold. A 2 star LB out of Wisky with offers from Bowling Green and Southern Illinois. That increases the total to EIGHT two stars committed before the end of July, and is already the most we have had in a decade. This class is shaping up to be about 65th in the nation by signing day.

Really homers, these are our top targets? We aren't even targeting 4 star and 5 star kids? Bowling Green must hate us, as more than 50% of our commits had offers from them.

247Sports has a combined rating of all the services (Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and 247). We currently only have 1 2* recruit when you take and avg. out all the rankings.

Yea but when you do it the right way (bounce around from service to service looking for low rankings) we have an astonishing 8 two stars! When you compare that number to every other team's 247 composite ranking, it really shows how bad our top 25 class is.

Plus, if you choose not to figure in any 3*/borderline-possible-might-be 4* recruits, ALL we have are 2* or worse. And if you take THOSE out, we have NO ranked recruits.

And if one REALLY wants to get technical, we have zero SIGNED recruits with LOIs secured.

And to get really horrific, there's no guarantee KF won't cancel the season since he already cancelled the breakfasts and is probably siccing the NSA on all of us, anyway.

And you wanna know what REALLY steams my bean? Yep, his salary!

The OP CLEARLY states an objective criteria regarding over/under 9 two stars: the rivals recruiting ranking. There is no picking and choosing from various sites to skew the data.

Per Rivals, Iowa has the most 2 star commits of any D1 college football team, including MAC, Sunbelt, and other conferences where schools play in stadiums with 10,000 people at games. Per Rivals, this Iowa class has more 2 star recruits than any other Iowa class in the past decade. Per Rivals, we have had just one 4 star commit in the past 2.5 years. By far, the worst in the Big 10, and one of the worst of any BCS team nationwide.

You can spin it all you want that all of these 2 star recruits are "borderline" 3 star players or whatever makes you happy...but that can be said for any 2 star recruit in the country. Rivals didn't target Iowa and purposefully suppress our star ratings. We offered 2 star recruits 8 months before signing day that no other decent team was desperate enough to offer so early, and they said yes.

It really is as simple as that. These are the kind of kids that we used to offer in February, right around signing day, when we swung for the fences with 4 star guys and missed at the last minute. Now we aren't even trying for those guys and it is resulting in a bloated, 2 star heavy recruiting class that many will be unhappy with come signing day.

We have about 4 spots left in this recruiting class. Will at least one blue chipper come to Iowa, Mr. Seth Wallace, or are we just little ol mega rich Iowa? Northwestern, Illinois, and Minn have had no trouble landing at least one. Duke has 4 already. Kentucky has 2. What am I missing here? Remember the shiny new facilities that fell in your lap when you came aboard?

24/7 is more reliable on this than rivals is. This is an outstanding class #20 in the nation. Rivals tends to under value these recruits.

They approach players that fit into the program. Who cares how many stars is next to their names. If they fit in the program and work hard then everything is fine. It isn't like the NFL is going to stop signing Iowa players who are two star recruits. Iowa seniors have plenty of talent....They just need a better gameplan and gameday coaching to be more W's....
