Yes, officiating was awful, but..

Officiating very very rarely if ever decides a game. As a washed up athlete I used to react to refs, looking back it is a compete waste of a players energy and focus on the game. It was called, move on. If I was playing or coaching today I would tell my players to completely ignore refs and calls (except to pay attention to how a game is being called).

I knew we were in trouble when MSU didn't even pick up their first foul until around the 8 minute mark of the first half. That is inexcusable especially with the way that they play. That being said, the refs were bad both ways, and didn't cost us the game. Silly, lazy turnovers, free throws, and 3-pt shooting did us in.

The refs absolutely cost us the game. If the refs call the game fairly we win this game. Turnovers absolutely cost us the game. If we make a couple less stupid tos we win this game. Not having RDM absolutely cost us the game. If we have RDM we win this game. You change anyone of those three things and we win. You can also probably throw in missed freethrows as a cause for us losing.

Agree the officiating was horrid. But as a player our coach always said if you want to win don't let yourself get put in the position of losing due to a bad call or a no-call. Sound advice, and something I repeated as a coach to my players and continue to tell players as an official.

You're a B-Ball official????? You're dead to me :p

Coaches have to have a scouting report on who the refs are going to be for every game now too. The look on Izzos face at the end of the game said it all. He knew damn well they didn't deserve that win. It was handed to him on a silver platter. Take any one thing the officiating free throw shooting turnovers and have one of those go our way just alittle bit and that group without Marble has a W. As frustrating as that is it's a step the right way. When I saw Marble wasn't playing I woulda thought no way Hawks keep it within ten at the end. I object to Mcaffery not seeing toughness. I thought they fought hard. Momentum swung away in the 2nd half again and they didn't quit. They didn't play great but the effort was there. I think Woodbury needs to not only get physically stronger but with him it's a mindset. He is trying to be such a finesse guy and that's great to have soft touch around the basket. But I'd like my big guy to try and go up strong with the ball. Try to dunk it when your at the rim. Other than him Mcabe and Basabe picked up the slack they played great.

Fran was right. He said they clearly got the message defensively, but they showed little to no mental toughness on the offensive end. That showed in all the dumb mistakes (Gesell's words, not mine) they made, especially at times when they really needed a basket and had a chance to get one. Too often, they let MSU's physical play get them out of sync mentally.

Everybody's got a plan until they get hit in the mouth. It's the teams who can fight through that and still execute the gameplan that are truly ready for prime time. Iowa didn't do that last night.

I see what your saying. I guess I see that as more of playing smart and common sense more so then toughness. I think the combination of MSUs tough play and the refs letting alot of it go got to em. I agree they coulda shoulda reacted to that better. After a close game especially like that there are going to be more then one thing to nitpick about that coulda been the difference. As frustrated as we are imagine how the Staff and players feel

I, and many others, warned that this would be the case this year. Young teams play that way.

Oh I know, because I was one of those as well...It just hurts so much more as the talent improves and the mental mistakes continue to plague this team. Good or bad thing, but one thing I've noticed (and could be mistaken) is that Fran tends to wait for the media timeouts rather than calling time outs to get the heads back in the game. IMO with young teams they play so spuraticly that I'd rather call the time out sooner then let them fall into a rut.

No, they didn't. The things Iowa could control - but didn't - cost them the game.

And out of all these factors, the team and coaching staff can only control two. They can stop with the stupid turnovers, but most of those are turnovers of inexperience. Hopefully the players will learn and cut them down. They can also shoot free throws at a higher percentage down the stretch; to paraphrase an old SI article, we need to shoot free throws, not foul shots.

You can't really control injuries. You can only hope for the best. I believe this was the biggest factor in the loss. You simply can't lose your go-to guy and expect the other players to perform at the same level. Especially when Marble is the one who is the playmaker as the shot clock is going down and who the offense runs through at the end of the game in a close game.

We can p*** and moan about the officiating until we are blue in the face; it doesn't do any good. As a former player it took me a long time to learn this. The call is made. No matter how incredulous you look at the official, no matter how you try to plead your case, no matter what actually happened, what the official calls is what he calls. Get over it. And for the record, the calls in this game were bad both ways; both phantom calls and non-calls.

Did you see the Packers Seahawks game this year? Hawks UNI last year? So the "if ever" part of your argument needs to go. It absolutely happens.

Obviously- a coach should tell kids to move on, not worry about the refs, control what you can control. But fans should be able to talk about the reasons their team won or lost and SOME of the time the refs are a factor, one of the variables for which different values end in different game outcomes.

That was true against MSU. Iowa could have done better on other variables but the big X that was Jim Burr et al hurt Iowa's outcome.

Of course officiating is a factor. Everything that happens in a game factors into the outcome, including whether or not a player has to take a dump in the fourth quarter.

But it's generally a good idea to place blame on things you can control before anything else. The Packers/Seahawks situation was different, as it was CLEARLY a blown call on what would have been a victory-sealing interception on the final play. That's much different than picking out a variety of calls over the course of a game and pinning a loss on those plays.

The officiating had a role, but it wasn't the main factor in the outcome of the game. 18 turnovers, missed free throws in crunch time, and Marble's absence were much more important than the officiating.

I see Jim burr is doing the Georgetown st johns game. That ******* piece of **** shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a basketball arena.

That's what drives me nuts about college hoops. I don't get why refs decide to call a game like that, nobody wants to watch that ****. If Iowa weren't playing I would have turned this game off in the first half.

The amount of reach ins that were allowed in that game was something I have never seen take place before.

Im at a loss for what that was, those were not the rules of basketball the way I understand them.
