Still a preponderance of short throws to the outside; safe KF throws I guess. by this chart JR needed a few more completions more than 20 yards
Jake played well in the first quarter/lst half, but what happened I think is a "flash in the pan sort of thing." CJB did not really have a lot of time in the game to do his thing and most of the fireworks happened while Jake was in there.
I'm sure CJB's services will be far from done this year (maybe even the 2nd half).
I am also a CJ supporter and would like CJ to run the zone-read option for Iowa at a minimum.
Jake played just about flawlessly and looked to push the ball down the field. Huge stones for him to come into a high stress situation and perform like he has.
Serious question, can jake throw a deep ball... Like hard and with zip? Serious McSerious hereStill a preponderance of short throws to the outside; safe KF throws I guess. by this chart JR needed a few more completions more than 20 yards
Did you actually watch CJB's first series? He looked lost. He missed the dish to Parker on the option, he threw two very bad passes and had a three and out. I give Kirk credit for getting him in early but he showed no spark. The whining will go on all year, even if we run the table. Pathetic.
Chill out Dude.....I said Jake played real well and I gave him credit in that. But, if you look at the 2 and a half quarters or so (or look at the throw chart above on his passes) it was really more of the same. Decent, good, but not spectacular. He had a good game.
I just hope that Kirk does not blow his wadd over a run of a lot of points over a short time span and forget about the things CJB did in Jake's absence. As I think that sequence is probably more the exception and not the rule (but it would be great if it was the rule!).
Actually, if you look at your post, you said he played well for a quarter and a half. That is not the same as saying he played really well, which is what I said. When looking at your entire post and not taking a couple of words out of context, you basically paid Jake a back-handed compliment. That isn't anything close to giving him credit.
You said that, not me......I gave Jake credit. He played decent for most of the game, the first quarter looked real good. He did his typical short passing game stuff overall, but it was executed well. He had a good game....and I think the coaches gave him more to work with play calling wise......unlike CJB today. Clearly, CJB was #2 in the their game planning and "significant minutes" was a mirage.
That is the way I saw your post as I looked at it more than once before responding. Now, maybe you meant it differently, and admittedly one cannot really read tone of voice from the printed word. But there are enough people that are trying any way they can to justify giving Bethard time that they are willing to read things in a way that justifies putting CJ in there, no matter what Jake does.
I really don't care who is in there (actually I want the best guy in there) as long as the team is winning. I do think CJ is the guy, but that is ultimately the coaches call.
i am one of those that would really like to see CJ more, and I wanted him to start today. But I am willing to recognize that Jake got the pt today that he deserved, based upon how he played.
Was great in the first quarter or so... then It was the same Iowa no offensive team we know.
The ole did you actually watch the game/player question. Really?
How about the play calls they actually gave CJ which do not fit what he does best. True, the read option has allowed him to make some plays with his feet, but only one pass play I can think of went down field when he was in the game (which resulted in a pass interference penalty). CJB looked like he was set-up to fail play-calling wise from the staff. I would not call his playing time today "significant minutes". More like throw CJB a bone while Jake gets to wolf down the main meal.
Once again, Jake had a pretty good game and this is not a knock on Jake. It is just Jake did what he normally does and executed pretty well (the short passing game). He had a nice pass to DP for a touchdown. But, the play calling was not objectively favorable for CJB imho.
Clearly Jake is Ferentz's pick. It is what it is. I only hope it works out in the upcoming games.
Funny you should mention that the play calling for CJB looked like they were setting him up to fail. My FIL and I were watching the game and after his second series we looked at each other and said the same thing. The play calling for him was atrocious...this staff (and KF in particular) have their guy...they don't want to see CJB do much of anything. They will throw him a bone or two but they gave him the big old middle finger today. Hope the kid realizes he's got special talent, would hate for him to sit on the bench behind captain check down for another year while he could be learning the system somewhere else for a staff that wants the kid to succeed. Hey...maybe Arkansas would take him?
I agree......I would hate to lose him to transfer, but you never know what a kid will do if he could get meaningful starting time somewhere else.
I thought Kirk was pretty smug when mentioning how he thought Jake has been practicing well, thought he would play well, then kind of smirked and said he thought CJ would to.
Jake is his guy for sure. Kirk needed Jake to play well today to re-establish his image with the fans and the media (show who is boss). And they gave him the narrative to make it fit. Thankfully for Kirk, the Indiana QB went down.
To be a fly on the wall in there. Once again, Jake played a good game and real good 1st quarter (and yes he looked better than CJ today, but I think that had to do with circumstances at least partially), but we really can't realistically expect a 28 point first quarter under this staff game in and game out and with the conservative style and slightly vertically challenged arm (in comparison to CJB) that Jake possesses. The sample size would indicate this. And, the longer CJB holds the clip board, the more potential for rust and doubt can creep into his mind. Is CJ always going to come to the rescue when Jake starts going sidewards only to be yanked again when the going gets good?
I really hope for Jake's sake (since he is Kirk's pick) that he can have a solid performance game in and game out from now on in so it does not come to that. Sadly for CJ I'm not sure what really his role is right now with the team other than maybe a highly touted tease of the coaching staff. He probably deserves better.
All this said, like I made mention several days ago, sometime it does not seem to matter who plays the QB position over time with this staff as they seem to be challenged with the play-calling and regression.
For the guy getting most of the first team practice reps it works out great. For the guy getting the leftovers, not so much.
I really don't think we'll be able to score enough points to win the West, with JR. And, yes, CJ got the salute from KF yesterday. I wouldn't be surprised to see CJ transfer to a small southern school where he doesn't have to sit a year and can play 2 years.
I've seen a few posts like this. Do we know how the ratio of reps have been over the last couple weeks?
60/40? 50/50? 70/30?
It would seem to make sense for the named starter to get more practice reps, but I don't know how they are split.
Yes, Rudock had a good first half, but then the O stagnated. The usual under Ferentz. The problem isn't Rudock, it is the play calling. I wouldn't necessarily blame GD either. No, I would blame KF for that. The same thing happened with KOK... It will be interesting when BF takes over OC next year, and how father & son deal with Kirk's conservatism.
