Just have a spring season. Kickoff the first Saturday in March.
That would be ok except for the fact that if you do that and had say, 8 or 9 games, that would make 20-21 games in a twelve month period if you resumed regular scheduling the following fall.

I personally don't think you're going to see football or basketball this year. I know football is the lifeblood of almost all major athletic departments, but I don't think you're going to see teams get together in groups to practice or play. There would be too much of a dichotomy between sports teams and the rest of the student body (and public in general), and the public outcry will negate the idea, whether right or wrong.

Yes, there are millions of rabid college football fans, but there are many, many millions more people who don't give a rip about sports.

You also have to keep in mind that universities don't need sports. For example U of I has way, way more resources to support itself than the athletic department could ever dream of.

I think as sports fans we get tunnel vision thinking that there's no way a football and basketball season could get canceled, but it's not outside the realm of possibility at all. Sports will resume at some point, but the financially struggling programs will be weeded out. And I don't think it's going to happen this fall/winter.

I think there is a near 0% chance the Pac 10 will play football. I think the Big Ten's odds are under 10%. I think the SEC (other than Vandy), most of the Big 8, Clemson and Florida State will use substantial efforts to attempt to pull off a season in some form (but even at that, I think there is a sub 50% chance they can get it done). Depending on how the ACC contract is worded, I wouldn't be surprised if we see FSU and Clemson attempt to skip town on the ACC and join the SEC if most of the SEC is able to play. Those are rabid "football at all cost" programs that have very different views than schools like BC, Duke, Wake, UNC, etc. and there is no way in hell Clemson is going to want to give up media rights funds for schools that aren't playing. I would just die if The Germ caused the SEC to add Clemson and FSU. They would probably have to redo the CFP so that the SEC East and SEC West both had a title game and each conference champ got into the big show. It would be the best thing for college football because then we would hopefully be able to eliminate the uncompetitive blowout games involving second tier programs like Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

If the kids are back on campus in the fall, they will find a way to have their casual encounters. I don't know how anyone could live in a dorm and not be exposed to anything and everything someone has. Don't know how they will handle the community restroom/shower situation in the dorms either.

I do think that public opinion and cancel culture will play a huge part. You can’t escape it nowadays.

If the PAC-12 came out and said they’re not playing football because of player safety and say, FSU decided to play, the FSU’s are gonna get shut down in a hurry by the Twitter and media mob. It will be the same as how sports got cancelled when this first got started. First they said no fans, then postponements, then cancellations, and then indefinite shutdowns. If (when) the full 2020 football/basketball shutdown happens, there will be athletic departments that don’t survive, conferences will get scrambled, and there will be a totally different landscape the fall after next.

My guess is no football in any form and no basketball until there is a widely available vaccine.

If we lock down the country for another 6 months the virus will be the least of our worries. We'll be looking at another great depression with people out of work, homeless in the streets and people struggling to feed themselves. Australia is already seeing a spike in suicides that surpasses their Covid-19 deaths. In short: we're all f***ed if we follow a perpetual "lock down" strategy. The fallout from that will dwarf the direct effects of the virus.

We still don't have a vaccine for H1N1 or a variety of other viruses...years later. Yet, somehow we survived. This disease is not killing young and/or healthy people in droves. It largely strikes the elderly, sick and compromised...like its predecessors. Intelligent steps to protect those groups is the logical (and time tested) way to proceed.

There has been a vaccine for the 2009 H1N1 swine flu for some time now. They did have a problem with the 2018 vaccine though. The H3N2 strain mutated and there was no update for the Influenza B virus, so the vaccine in 2018 was less than 10% effective. Last seasons flu shot seemed to be doing quite a bit better though.

So far the Covid-19 virus doesn't seem to mutate much. The mutations they have seen to be minor random sequence changes. It is hoped that Covid-19 is stable enough that they can at least have something predictable to work against.

The dominoes are beginning to fall. There’s just not going to be football or basketball this year, folks. We need to face it.

Keep in mind that back in March we thought there was no humanly possible way the NCAA tournament could be cancelled, let alone everything totally shut down. There will probably be some NFL because it’s, well, the NFL, but we better just plan on September 2021.

Some on here might compare the lack of mutation to Iowa's offense. Same thing year in and year out with very little changes. Sorry only joking. Couldn't resist. Damn I miss sports.

I wonder why they'd make that decision 3 months before school is supposed to start. I get that they need time to put plans in place but just seems premature to me at this point. Think of the implications this could have on recruiting, let alone the way this changes the landscape of collegiate sports as we know it.

I would add that I have worked in public school districts for my whole adult life and been exposed to about everything. Got a flu shot annually. Never had the flu. You may want to join me.

I've been sick for a couple days in the past 8 years. I never get or have ever gotten the flu shot and have been notified that I have been exposed to type A more than once.
As for football, Vegas is starting to figure out how to reopen and that should about tell you all you need to know about sports events. If you can space out the games in a casino/hotel far enough, not to mention all the different people pushing buttons on machines, I suspect higher learning institutions and thus sports will be a go.

I don't know anyone who's received the H1N1 vaccine if indeed it is available. Vaccines are highly effective for some things...but they're not the panacea many perceive them to be.

As much as we don't want to pay for it...we will...and it will be safe. Televise all games and get as much from advertising dollars as possible and pass the rest of the losses onto fans in the form of pay per view. Im willing this season if it means getting to watch games. It might feel like cc-tv DIII football viewing but people are itching for sports. People are watching video auto racing.

No, I don't think so. These schools will play a guy facing a rape charge. They honestly don't give a shit what the Twitter mob thinks. Again, I still think there is less than a 50% chance they can pull it off in the South, but if the schools feel like they can work something out and half the schools drop out, they're not going to get pressured into a cancellation. See, e.g., NASCAR. If NASCAR has a problem, though, then there is a 0% chance college ball plays.

My favorite driver lost his ride due to the video game racing.

I do agree that teams in the former Confederacy will push the hardest for at least part of a season. But if the 2nd wave hits during the fall, all bets are off so to speak. Without more answers like a better understanding of this disease along with mass testing and vaccines college and pro sports aren't happening anytime soon.

NASCAR is a pro sport and is starting this coming Sunday. 400 mile race at the sacred Darlington Raceway in lovely Darlington, SC. They haven't run a day race at Darlington in several years and not with the current car package, so this one won't be won by the engineers. No practice, no qualifying, and the temps are looking to be high 80's, which will make the Lady In Black slicker than snot on a doorknob.

lol, Kyle Larson that's your dude then, huh?:)

Yeah, that's my guy. I have no idea what the hell he was doing. I think he was temporarily transported to his 14 year old body and was trying to be edgy or something thinking he was playing Call of Duty. The dude completely cratered his economic prospects for the rest of his life. He was in line for a top ride next year and could have turned into a multi time Cup champion. Poof. Gone in an instant.

Unfortunately I think you're right. (Ouch that hurt a little)
