Who the hell is comparing it to ppg? The problem with individual +/-, especially over a non-conf sample size of only 13 games against greatly different levels of competition, is that it's way too dependent on line up combinations to actually measure an individual's contribution.

For example, let's look at the ISU game.

Gesell had 11 points on 2/10 shooting, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 turnovers.
Clemmons had 14 points on 5/8 shooting, 1 rebound, 8 assists and only 1 turnover.

I'm assuming you watched the game too, who would you say had a better game?

Well according to +/- it isn't even close, Gesell was +21 and Clemmons was only +2. Of course anyone who watched the game knows Clemmons was a huge part of why we won, he just spent more time on the court with Ogelsby-May-McCabe who all struggled that night.

Also, the overall +/- numbers are greatly diluted by the Coppin St's, Howards and SC State's we have played.

This is in-line with Ken Pomeroy's thoughts on plus-minus.

Spank - do you have a subscription to any advance stat website that shows the minutes each combination of players is on the floor? I'd be willing to bet the guy who leads Iowa in +/- is the major contributor who has spent the least time on the court with Ogelsby.

I do not. But you've got some good ideas here.

I am not disagreeing with you. I simply compared it to ppg and said that +/- typically is a better statistic. I even said at the end that conference +/- is more important. I recognize that lineup matters. Please reread my post and you might get that I was just stating it is a more useful statistic than others. I liken it to run differential for a baseball team. If you have a bad run differential but a winning record it means you are getting lucky with close wins and at some point that luck will likely wear out.

I would like to see clemmon's +/- for games he has started. As I would bet it is better. And I know the isu game he started but I would bet that is his low game.

Btw could someone really give what gabe's +/- is because I couldn't find it. I want to see if it is as great as herby would think...especially since he single handedly extended the lead against uni.

It's not, UNI is lower for him, -4.

I really like this stat. Although I am a big hockey fan and this stat has been used in hockey for years. I like it in bball although I'm not sure it is quite as accurrate in hoops. There is so much less scoring in hockey in tends to give you a good indication in hockey what lines are scoring and what lines are giving up scores.
Anyway my vote is Woodbury. My guess with him is because he plays less minutes than most of the other choices, sans Basabe. And when he is on the floor he commands the attention and frees up White, Marble, Gesell, and others to score. White and Marble see the floor a lot without Woody on it. Woody does not see the floor as much without one or both of those players on it as well.

My first inclination was White because he is the best BASKETBALL player on the team. But I eventually chose Gesell because of his high assist total and his ability to score.

I gave in and looked up the results (yeah, I'm inpatient), I was astonished by what I found.

Also while I was looking I found that Gabe is averaging 6.5 blocks per 40 minutes. That is far and away the highest of anyone in the Big Ten that is on the top 25 for blocks. Nationally thought, its good but not great.

I went with Woody. We play better defense when Woody is in the game and methinks that is an important factor in this equation.
