What does each Big 10 team lose next year

How many programs do you think would fire their coach for doing what Fran has done?

I didn't say Fire Fran. However from here on out he needs to improve his record and performance. What he has done in his eight years at Iowa has earned him some extra time to show what he can do from this point going forward. Am I as a life long Iowa fan totally satisfied with his results and think he doesn't have to improve? Absolutely not. To settle for third place finishes in the conference every few years and one and done in the BTT is absolutely unacceptable going forward. Yes Lickliter drove this program into the ditch but that tenure has disappeared in the rear view mirror and now Fran has to be measured by his own merits. How does he rank up against Lute, George, and Tom. Forget Alford and Lickliter as neither one of them were in the same league as the previous coaches.

I will give you this in that you have said yourself that Fran needs to improve and meet higher achievements in the next three years. However you then turn and say that if in the next six or more years he maintains the same level he has been at, that, that earns him a total of 15 total years before reevaluation.......... that's nuts!!! Are you related to him? Are you young and just started following Iowa basketball about the time Alford or Lickliter took over? This would help explain things as far as your perspective.

Lute was better
He's been better than George
he's been right on par with Tom (sorry but Tom inherited a completely different animal than Fran did)

But that is comparing him to Iowa coaches from 20 and 30 years ago - not at all the current landscape of college basketball.

He's been exponentially better than Alford and Lick and the only real thing not positive about his program has been that they played so well early in a few seasons that they didn't end up living up to the hype and failed to meet unrealistic expectations put on them because of said early success. 2 different seasons they cracked the top 10 when no one even picked them in the top half of the conference as far as expectations? Some can call that melting down - others can call it what is likely was and that was falling back to mean a little.

I have followed the Hawks faithfully since the early 80's when I was old enough to comprehend the game - I have lived and died with the team every single season - even the very lean years and I can honestly say - with a straight face and mean it, Fran McCaffery is my favorite part of Iowa Basketball right now.

You say if he stays the exact same, he needs to be fired in a couple years. So I ask again, how many programs do you think would fire their coach for doing what Fran is doing? What's weird is you said he deserves 2 more years but thew out a "I'm done with this conversation " post because I said I would be ready to move on after 5 years. It's not like there is a huge difference between settling for what Fran has done for 9 years and settling for what he's done for 12 years.

Fran is a better coach than Davis. If he inherited those teams, he would have kept us that high with his recruiting. Instead he is having to build us up one class at a time. I think they are really close in player development and coaching, but Fran being a relentless recruiter makes him the best coach since Lute.

This question is for anyone who wants to answer. If Gard has the exact same next three years as Iowa just had, does Wisconsin fire him?

If he stays the same - Iowa is a borderline top 25 program every season with a higher ceiling and a chance at a special season every 3-4 years - and that's where he has it... and it's what he accomplished coming out off the worse stretch in program history to recruit to. I don't really understand how anyone can be dissatisfied or assume off of what has happened thus far that he's even scratched what he's capable of.

I agree - Fran's recruiting has been absolutely my favorite part because it just keeps getting better and he and his staff continue to find diamonds in the rough and continue to turn them into all conference players.

What I'm really excited about is the ceilings Fran's teams have.

Your chance to overtake Wisconsin this coming season, guys. I expect you and others will do it. The following seasons though look pretty good that we'll be up around the top again.

Meh. I'm really only concerned with Swanigan's decision. Haas is a decent player but without Swanigan he will probably see more doubles than he really ever has.

Fran figured out how to exploit him on the defensive end in pick and rolls last year at Carver.

I did see an article about Swanigan recently where he in essence said "I'm just starting the NBA process, so it would take news for me to leave Purdue."

How many would fire Fran? Very few, IMHO. He took a perennial cellar dweller and turned them into a 3 year (and counting) 10 wins per B1G season contender. How many other teams in the B1G can say that? He’s earned 2, if not 3, more years because of that consistency and the talent he’s going to have over the next few years.

Now, if he maintains (over the next few years) 18 wins a year and barely makes the Dance and is one and done in the B1G tournament and doesn’t make it to Sat/Sun of the first weekend of the Dance, then his seat should be pretty hot.

I don’t, however, see that happening. I see 20 win seasons and maintaining the consistency of being in the top five or six of the B1G and being a contender. I see forays into the Sweet 16 or farther. I see more 4 star recruits taking a serious look at the Hawks. I see Fran retiring from Iowa.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

So if his next 4 years are equal to the last 4, would you think he should be fired, warm seat, or completely fine? I personally would be OK with a Davis type push out at that point because with Fran's age, we wouldn't have much to lose. But as of right now, I think Fran has Iowa basketball in the best position it's been in since the 80's.

Good question. He managed to pull a Phoenix out of the dumpster fire that was Iowa basketball and got them into the post season in just 3 years. He’s gotten Iowa to the post season in each of the last 6 seasons.

The problem is, in each of the last 4 post-seasons, the Hawks only have 2 wins. (I don’t consider the BTT as “post season”. We know Iowa will play in that tournament regardless.)

To answer the question, if the next four are the same as the last four, the seat should definitely be hot. I’d have to see how the team is performing before I say fire or not.

I would also want to know who the replacement was.

When Fran took over Iowa, it was bad.... no doubt, but I dunno that you could call a program that Sagarin lists as a top 10 college basketball program of all time and that the AP said was #23 all time for appearances in polls a "perennial cellar dweller" - doesn't change the fact Fran turned it around quick.

Point taken. It was probably too strong a phrase. But it was a dumpster fire and yes, Fran turned it around quickly.

GO HAWKS!!!
