What are your expectations for Adam Woodbury next year?

I don't think his impact will be scoring. I think he'll help defensively as well as rebounding. He'll definitely add much needed depth as well.

I don't look at it that way at all, because teams are not required to play a 'true center'.

True but a true center is what this years team has been missing.

Iowa's best lineup to start the year will be to have White, McCabe and Basabe in the front court. Are you going to tell me that you think Woodbury is going to produce at a higher rate than any one of those three?

McCabe yes, White no, and Basabe I don't know.

I tend to side with Duff here...although, high school opponents are not going to go inside and attack Woodbury when most of their bigs are probably 6-5 to 6-7. Makes no sense to try and win that way unless you want to send in a goon to try and get Woodbury in foul trouble.

That said, I am not sure on how many good college shot blocks came from a background of less than a block a game in high school.

You might be right but I just cannot see many teams running plays at him where he even gets an opportunity to block. Without having seen him play it is tough to just look at numbers in high school and expect that kind of production in college. The Nike camp would be a better indication of how well he can block, are there any numbers that exist?

Yes, they are...but just having a 'true center' doesn't solve a problem unless he is ready to play some minutes. Not saying Woodbury isn't...just don't want people viewing him as some sort of savior for next year.

Look, basketball is turning into a guard dominated game. What we need is a big body that can out rebound and out muscle people.

I don't want 20 ppg out of my center, I want 20 rebounds.

I undertstand your argument, but you gotta understand that elite shotblockers in college are elite shot blockers in HS. Erek hansen averaged 5.8 blocks per game as a HS senior. Jared Reiner averaged 6 blocks per game as a HS senior. Those are HS shot blocking numbers.

Also understand that Jared Reiner NEVER averaged more than 1.2 blocks per game at Iowa, and Erek Hansen won the B10 defensive POY (in a watered down year) averaging only 2.6 blocks per game.

I don't think some of you understand how hard it is to block two shots per game. Meyers Leonard from Illannoy leads the B10 in blocked shots this year at 1.9. There is no way on earth Woody is going to average 2 blocks per game as a freshman.

I think Woodbury gets 15 minutes or less per game, around 5 points and 4 boards per game. When I look at the forward minutes, I'd like to think White, Basabe and McCabe can each be 30mpg players next year. I think Olaseni will get some more minutes, Meyer will get some minutes...Woodbury, Olaseni and Meyer will divvy up the 30 minutes that White, Woodbury and Basabe are not on the floor. Even if that winds up being 40 minutes, it's going to be tough for any one of those players to get up to 20mpg IMO.

Basabe can barely get 20 mins a game on a team with no front court depth at all and suddenly he's going to be a 30 min a game player on a team that will have much more depth?

Consider me highly skeptical.

Very good post.

This also translates to what people expect for scoring and rebounding.

Aaron White is averaging 10.4 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. He is doing that in 23.3 minutes per game. That's .446 points per minute and .232 rebounds per minute.

I think Woodbury gets 15mpg next year. If he can score and board at White's clip, which I would bet against, that's 6.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

White is getting real good production per minute. Matt Gatens' points per minute is .456

Mel had 25 mpg as a freshman. We all have seen him take a step back this year, for whatever reason. But I think he has come on enough towards the end to motivate himself, and I think we'll see Mel have a good year next year. Maybe not 30, but I just don't see Woodbury getting many more than 15 minutes per game.

Bulk up
Rebound
Block shots
Put backs

He has unlimited potential throughout his career, it's too bad Fran doesn't have the luxury of redshirting AW his freshman year.

Those that have placed him in the starting line up might be premature. While we are void a true center Woody isn't ready to be a starting center IMHO. I only watched the game yesterday vs. Valley and plan to watch again on Friday.

I wasn't concerned about offense because they collapsed so much on him. I though East often shot way to early, however, before Woody got back down court. What concerned me was the lack of defense and rebounding, especially the first three quarters. It just wasn't an impressive performance.

He is a raw talent and I'm convinced will become a solid D1 contributor but let's not put him on a pedestal just yet. On the other hand, Marcus Paige is ready to play for NC tomorrow.

His last four games: 15.6 mpg, 3.8 ppg, 3 rpg

I just don't think Basabe will ever be anything more than a role player, and is much more likely to see his mpg decrease even further next year.

Well that won't get him into the NBA.

4pts, 4 reb, 1.0 blocks, 15min 7'1" presence-priceless

Bigs will have better depth and rotate more. Regardless of how many blocks Adam has I think he improves the interior defense. I can not see how he does not help us improve. Regardless of his personal stats, I think he frees up space for our three 4's. I just think he will make the team better next year overall. Defensively, if he can make the team miss a couple buckets and help improve our FG percentage, maybe improve our rebounding margin. We are looking at three or four more W's next year. Anyway, I know you are to keep things in perspective. Jon I am a little curious how you think Jared was more college ready? If you have time could you do a little deeper comparison of the two and who you would give the edge too? ie: passing ability, jump shot, ability to get up and down the floor, ect.

We have had defensive and rebounding lapses all season with Basabe and McCabe, so I am not sure why both are expected to yield different results next year. Let's be honest, McCaffrey isn't a defensive coach and we are going to have outscore people vs. win games WI style. Throw out defense and rebounding and just look at offensive production from Basabe and McCabe the last 10 games--yikes. It is probably a coin toss whether both have more fouls than points over this stretch.

I think Olasneni and the freshman will player a larger role in the front court than many think. We don't have enough offensive weapons to overcome little / no productivity from the post and we desperately need a shot blocker / changer to trigger the break.

This is complete bull ****.

I dont expect Adam to be looked at to produce much in the way of scoring numbers at all. Adam will need to be effective on the glass when he is in there and will need to just be a threat when the ball is in his hands.

I look at Adam to garner 15-20 minutes per game (assuming he can avoid whistles). 5-6 rebounds would be tremendous. I expect to see him be able to catch in traffic and make better and better decisions with the ball in his hands as the year goes on. I'm not going to assign points to my expectations but want to see him shoot around 40-45% (better would be stellar). If he can be effective with the ball in his hands, and do the little things without the ball in his hands letting the game come to him, he will make everyone down low that much better.

I hope that Gabe can be our effective Defensive presence in the post and Adam can bring more of the banger aspect to the post. If they can effectively do that we won't need much in terms of points, other than put backs in Gabe's case and maybe a few post feeds from Adam.

We'll do the same with some of the other frosh in different threads, but let's start with Woodbury as there has been some recent chatter on this pursuant to him being in the state tourney in DSM and some getting their first look at him. I'll check back in on this thread and offer my thoughts, as well as a few opinions from folks in the biz, but want you all to chime in first.

Minutes? Points? Rebounds? Overall impact to next year's team?

He is a freshman and will have a lot to learn...

I think if he gives us:

23min

8pts

9rbs

1-2 blocks

a game it is a good season for him.
