transfer portal news

That's his overarching issue still today I think. The guy is capable but for whatever reason won't fully apply himself. Maybe that's why he didn't end up wanting to be at Iowa. Iowa wasn't going to let him loaf off. They woulda demanded his best and got that out of him. I'll maintain this had came here he woulda been a top 5 pick maybe even 1 overall. He coulda been Orlando Pace kind of dominant. He didn't want to be that though. He wanted to cash checks and goof off down there. It's too bad but it's his life he has to live with the consequences

I think he’ll be fine living with the consequences of making a ton of money while playing for a team that has won 31 games so far in 3 years.

Yes, you are right in that he will be just fine. But what could've been is what we are talking about here. I am sure he has made plenty of NIL money at Alabama to keep his bills paid for a long time.

I think what happened is what was meant to happen. If he truly wasn’t down for doing what the Iowa staff expects, he probably would have had a bad time in IC and probably quit or transferred anyway.

He got a ton of NIL and won a ton of games at Bama and likely will still be a 2nd round draft pick at worst.

I know somebody who works at SE Polk schools and says he’s one of the nicest kids around. I don’t think he’s like a lot of other high level athletes and that’s ok.

What I've always noticed is how fast the Iowa guys start playing when get to the NFL, the first season. That tells you how much they are prepared coming out of Iowa. That is why certain NFL teams like Iowa guys, IMO.
If I remember correctly Bulaga started in the Super Bowl his rookie year.

That's just it he doesn't realize what he coulda been. He's content cause he thinks he's at the top. But he's clearly not. Maybe he'll mature the older he gets. I'm sure the NFL will humble his ass though. And I'm just assuming he'll go pro and not stay another yr. Cause once he hears 1st round grade why stay.

If you are 7 foot tall, or if you are 6'5", 300+ labs...you don't really get to choose your hobbies/passions. Sports are thrust upon you, whether you like it or not. For those of us also passionate about sports, we think about what a blessing it would be to be born with those gifts. But for those that are not passionate about sports, it is a double-edged sword. It provide opportunities, and in some cases fame and fortune. But they are also forced to toil away at something that doesn't bring that much joy to their lives.

I am certainly not saying we should be all "poor baby" towards preternaturally gifted athletes that are not that into sports. Mastery and dominance are fun, and even if you were not initially drawn to an endeavor, becoming really good at it is a reward in and of itself. But if you imagine yourself being pushed into something you are not really that into as a youth simply because of the gifts you were born with, you can maybe see how it could be challenge.

I don't know Proctor, so I don't know if this accurately describes him. But if this does capture his situation, my guess is that he will become more serious about FB as he matures and finds satisfaction in achieving mastery in this elite domain. I sure wouldn't bet against him having a sterling career.

Israel Polk from Akron has 2 years of eligibility left, and had 8 TDs this year and averaged 15.9 yds/rec.

Gotta love the MAC, they play zero defense.

I think our best hope is for a smaller school guy who has made some noise and is looking to step up a level. I don't want a P4 castoff who is leaving because they couldn't get on the field. And the P4 guys looking for a big payday (e.g. Marsh from Mich St.)...I just don't think we will be able to compete for those guys.

I agree with this. I don't think we have the reputation in the passing game to pull a P4 kid that has talent but is looking for more PT. Realistically, we need to look for stars a level or two down that has overachieved the level they have been playing in. That has served us well in the last few cycles.

Just at the WR position, that applies to Nick Easley, Charlie Jones, Kaden Wetjen, Seth Anderson, and Sam Phillips (our leading WR last season). I just want someone young enough we can get multiple years out of them, because our transfer portal acquisitions from those lower levels always take a bit of time to adjust to B1G football, but when they do, they have been very productive for us.

For WR's If you go back and watch the games there are two issues 1) Separation and lack there of in most cases. Whether that is coaching, a product of the RPO game where they were not expecting the ball or just talent which I don't think was the issue. 2) The guys just need to catch the ball. Gronowski didn't aways throw they best ball but there were LOTS of balls that were flat out uncontested drops. Many of those drops occurred on third down and many of them would have extended the drive. In Iowa's offense where they are not throwing 40 times a game and control the ball those catches are crucial to extending drives and giving the receivers more opportunities. The receivers didn't help themselves out in getting more opportunities.

He looks to be over 6’0 tall, so that is a plus. IIRC, ISU plucked Jayden Higgins out of Eastern Kentucky, so there are dudes out there to be had if you can find them.
