Tim Brando says Iowa needs two

What I don't really understand is if the committee loves computers so much why do they essentially only take one into consideration. (RPI)

They are encouraged to look at all computer rankings and can present them during selection behind their reasoning, the RPI has just historically been used and is better than most depending on who you ask.

The goal for the committee is to get the best 36 at large teams in the tourny...so I really think they need to put more emphasis on recent performance than on games that took place 4 months ago. Teams change so much over 4 months.

My main problem with Lunardi is that he has MTSU ahead of Iowa, Iowa's "modest wins" at home are all much better than anything MTSU has. How are they still on the bubble with a single win against the top 99 RPI teams.

You think that is bad take a look at Virginia's non conference schedule, a team that he has IN the tournament. Outside of Duke (at home) they really have no impressive wins either. I wonder how Lunardi justifies putting Virginia in the tournament but leaving out Iowa if "all" they do is beat MSU (ranked 7 RPI) on a neutral court?

Virginia has better big wins than Iowa. Wisconsin away is a great win, Tennessee, UNC, NC State, Maryland on the road are all solid wins in addition to the Duke win. They have terrible losses (ODU - probably the worst loss of any major conference team this year) but they don't bother me as much as MTSU does.

Texas to Chaminade takes the cake for that honor, no other way to swing it.

I would much rather see UVA in the tournament than either MTSU or Southern Miss, that's for sure.

That was on Chaminade's home floor though, Virginia's loss was on a nuetral court and Chaminade very well could beat ODU this season. But you're right, the B12 is terrible.

Except RPI has actually been the least accurate of the computer ratings.

A little lunardi for everyone:

Tyler (Des Moines)

Does Iowa get in with wins against NU and MSU? Or, must they make it to the B1G Championship game for consideration?

Joe Lunardi (2:10 PM)
The latter. One big win is probably not enough for Iowa.

Daniel (Davenport, IA)

I don't get your logic on Iowa. Illinois and Minnesota are sub .500 in conference and Iowa is ahead of them in conference. Iowa has been playing better than both teams of late (especially Minnesota.)
Joe Lunardi (2:27 PM)

I feel the pain of Iowa fans, but they need to get over it. NonConf was sub-300 and they have modest wins (all at home). They also played a weaker in-conference schedule than Illinois and Minnesota, and the Committee has that information. It really isn't close for them.

Ryan (cedar rapids)

Thats the point I'm trying to make, Joe. Dont you think the computers are to involved in the process? I realize Iowa played a terrible non-conference schedule.. but what i dont get is why that matters when its obvious Iowa is a better team than illinois and minnesota. You tell me whats better.. beating a cupcake by 30 or losing by 1 to a top 25 team? Thats a serious question.. does either scenario boost a resume?
Joe Lunardi (2:39 PM)
If Iowa is "obviously" better (and they are not), then why didn't they win enough games to make it a moot point?

I would have countered with: "If Illinois is obviously better than Iowa and Iowa sucks so badly, why did they not beat Iowa?"

Except RPI has actually been the least accurate of the computer ratings.

How is that proven? Considering any major conference team that finishes in the top 60 almost always gets in, I feel it must be accurate enough.

The question I really would like to have seen someone ask Lunardi is "If Iowa's resume is not good enough because it's four Top 50 wins are merely 'modest', then why are MTSU and Southern Miss ahead of Iowa in the bracketology when they have ZERO top 50 wins?"

Exactly, Illinois and Minny have good resumes, regardless of how they are playing now. Kentucky, Virginia, LaSalle, etc are who we need to compare ourselves to

How many top 50 opponents did they play? how many did Iowa play?

Whoever said Iowa fans need to stop comparing Iowa to MN and IL is dead-on. That is the worst possible argument you could make for Iowa's bubble chances.

I also don't get the love for teams like MTSU, Southern Miss, and even St. Mary's too.

Yes, this and you could put in any number of bubble teams for MTSU. Naturally he only picks the terrible questions that are easily countered.

Probably correct. Sigh.... I'm just ready for the Big Ten Tournament to begin. Let's get down to it! I'm bubbled out (hence my avatar). :p
