This game certainly does not help the cause for saying we belong with Big Ten Elite

There was rust for sure, but you got to bring it every night and especially at home. Daddy Marble even said that is big for this team last night on OnIowa Live.

It is a win, but a disappointing performance. Hopefully a sharp-shooting team shows up at the free throw line for the badgers.

Not to say we aren't, but perception wise a plodding effort at best.

This effort won't beat many teams. Especially B1G teams.

We gotta crawl before we walk.

A win over Nebraska at home, no matter how big wasn't going to make that statement.

If we want to announce we are among the elite, well that statement can start on Sunday

I say flush it. They've had 1 game in almost 3 weeks, finals, and now holidays. It showed that they haven't had much live action vs opponents lately, it'll get better. Love everyone that is about to jump off because of 1 game. To them I have one name, Lickliter.

I agree, but this team needs to bring it every night. Sure, we will not always be perfect, but this was not a great effort.

The sloppy shooting from the free throw line combined with blowing leads is becoming contagious on this team. I don't want to see this effort carry over to our bigger games. And, if we want to contend for the title, efforts like this will eventually cost us against lesser competition.

I want to see a well oiled machine.....not a plodding, weak, and lazy one. I want to see this team play up to its expectations.

Oh well, a win is a win though. Hopefully rust from the long lay-off. Better days are ahead I'm sure. :)

12/31/08 @ OSU 68, Iowa 65
12/29/09 Purdue 67, @ Iowa 56
12/29/10 Illinois 87, @ Iowa 77
12/31/11 Purdue 79, @ Iowa 76
12/31/12 Indiana 69, @ Iowa 65

Granted, all those teams were ranked, but it's been at least five years since Iowa's won a conference opener.
Regardless of how we played, we won!!

OSU struggled with Purdue and MSU struggled with PSU for awhile, it's going to happen especially with the lack of games in the last 2 weeks+.

They did, but they also put both of them away. OSU's guard play was also much better than ours and MSU did what they wanted to down the stretch.

Also for what it is worth, MSU and OSU also both won on the road. We struggled with a bottom tier team on our own home court.

Every team has stretches where they play bad basketball. This game is indicative of nothing except for that fact.

PERFECT warm up jock tightening game against Big 10 athletes better than any of you. I cant think of any other way to win this game than to lose it. Nice Win in basketball country!

Posts like this annoy me. I bet there was some Louisville fan that said something to the effect of "you can't play like this against Northern Iowa and do whatever the ****." They won the national title.

Well said. This game is indicative of the B1G grind. There will be ugly games. If you are lucky enough for these games to be winning ugly games, all the better.

I have no idea what this means but I like it.

...but this was not a great effort.

The defense was very good IMO. We lose if the effort isn't there on the defensive end. I don't think the guy that hit 7 threes against us last year even scored if I remember right. I think this is why Fran wasn't laying into them...defensive effort.

I would rather give a 4 out of 10 effort and get the win than give a 4 out of 10 effort on Sunday and get routed. We were rusty and quite possibly peaking ahead. Now we need to play up to our ability on Sunday and get another W.

This is very true. Iowa allowed less than 30% shooting and it wasn't just because of a bad shooting night. Nebraska had no good looks all night (at least when we weren't turning it over and giving them open transition baskets.) I feel like rust effects your offense, lack of effort effects your defense and we saw some poor offense and on that poor offensive night we still shot 45%.

No team brings it EVERY night. On the nights when you just don't have it, like tonight, you just scrap it out hopefully make enough plays to win. The Hawks did that tonight. That's a sign of a good team. Hopefully they'll bring it on Sunday, because if they don't it's gonna be a long night!

Tell that to John Wooden or Dan Gable. :)

Maybe over exaggerating in my statement, but Iowa's effort (or concentration, timing, mental toughness, or whatever you want to call it) tonight if repeated against future opponents in the Big Ten (strong or otherwise) is going to hurt them. If they want to be the team they want to be, it has to be better than tonight. That is the point. But a win is a win, so learn from it and move on.

Although I agree, I did see the team standing around flat footed at times on defense while the Nebraska guards cut right through to the hoop. Slow on rotating on help defense.

Re: This game certainly does not help the cause for saying we belong with Big Ten Eli

I don't think the problem tonight was lack of effort. I still think that sometimes you just don't have your best stuff. Tonight was one of those nights. I agree that we would have most likely lost tonight if we were playing one of the better teams in the league.

I agree sometimes you don't have it. We are all human and make mistakes. It is the pattern that probably concerns me the most. The chinks in the armor they need to get fixed. And it has not just been tonight against Nebraska. Iowa has not been good from the line this year and has had carried over a bad habit from last year of struggling at the end of games. This could be the difference between being an average NCAA participant, or possibly challenging for our league title and a higher seed.

Of course, maybe they are who they are and we are seeing what we are going to get.
