Texas & ND to the Big 10??

Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that a draw of the LHN is that they are going to show high school games and that this could help recruiting. I heard that this was deemed illegal for recruiting purposes and so it really hurt the programming the LHN had planned. Can anyone corraborate this?

Let's try this 12 team thing for a while.

Texas and ND know the terms. If they don't like them then don't let the door hit your AZZ on the way out the door. If you expect special treatment because of what you were or who you think you are then you do not belong. I don't think Texas can get the votes. At least I hope not. Nothing but trouble.

This.

Keep in mind there are a ton of hurdles to overcome for any of this to happen but the idea they are talking is fascinating. For Texas to come into the Big Ten the TAMU hurdle is gone but the Baylor one is not. Baylor holds a lot of political clout in Texas, one that was strong enough to get them into the B12 over schools like Houston & SMU. I could see the state of Texas getting involved at some point and attempt to force the SEC and/or B1G into taking Baylor.

Let me clue you in on how Delany and the B1G would react to attempted bullying by the jackholes in Texa$$:

Both Notre Dame & Texas would gladly join the Big Ten under the current equal revenue sharing program.

I haven't found the numbers for 2010, but in 2009 Texas received only $11.8 in the Big 12's unequal revenue sharing program that greatly favors Texas & Oklahoma. In contrast, every Big Ten school received $18.8 million or almost sixty percent more than Texas.

This year the discrepancy in revenue sharing distribution probably will be much larger. The Big 12 entered into a new $130 million a year deal with Fox & ESPN & implemented a more friendly revenue sharing plan. Even if the revenues are split only nine ways, Texas will receive probably no more than $16 million.

Every Big Ten school is expected to receive well over $25 million this year. Depending on the estmates used, anywhere from $27 to $29 million for each school.

Notre Dame could about triple its TV revenue by joining the Big Ten. Nobody really knows what NBC pays Notre Dame, but TV industry experts & insiders estimate it to be about $10 million a year. In addition, Notre Dame receives about 1.6 million for participation in the Big East in basketball.

The Big Ten, Notre Dame & Texas will be very smart. Notre Dame will announce that it will join the Big Ten after the expiration of its current agreement with NBC after the 2015 season. Likewise, Texas will announce that it is joining the Big Ten after the expiration of its current five-year commitment to the Big 12. Also, after the 2015 season.

The Big Ten's current TV deal expires after the 2016 season.

Thanks for the insight. Contractually, the timeline makes sense.

The NCAA hasn't ruled on that. They put it on hold until the NCAA could rule on it, and also because it was the source of a lot of the discontent. Nobody knows yet if it's actually allowed by the NCAA.

God I would hate Texas in the big ten. I really like the makeup of this league as it is now and would like to keep it this way as long as possible. In ND's case I wouldnt hate adding them but most of their requests can and should be ignored. Granting them all that they want at the start of their membership would start a precedent much like UT had in b12

Because there is more to being in the Big Ten besides football.
There is hundreds of millions in research money that is garnered in part due to cooperative efforts by schools in the league. Why does the Big Ten keep U. of Chicago around? Government money.

Football is the window dressing for the main deal for conferences...there is great political power in alliances of this sort, and when wielded in concert,it can be far more lucrative than football.

I don't understand the irrational fear with Texas. Texas is a better fit academically in the Big Ten than it is in the Big 12.

Everybody seems to forget the Commitee on Institutional Cooperation. The CIC is the academic consortium of the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago. It is the model for collaboration among top-tier research universities.

After the Association of American Universites, the CIC is probably the most prestigious organization of world-class research institutions in the country. The CIC increases the competitive advantage of its member institutions. Members enjoy cost savings and greater efficiencies; increased academic opportunities for students; and enhanced professional opportunities for faculty and staff.

CIC universities confer 15% of all Ph.D. degrees awarded annually in the United States. Also, members engage in $6 billion in funded research, receiving some 12 percent of the total federal research funds awarded annually.

Texas' administration & faculty fully realize the academic significance of membership in the Big Ten. Texas would be among equals.

We are a midwest conf. we expanded a little east and a little west but are still about middle america. ND and mizzou if any more.

Simply put: Texas is the prize that each conference wants and the Big Ten is the prize that most (if not all) teams want.

If ND and Texas want an 8 game schedule so they can keep traditional rivals and to play a powerhouse, so be it. That just means that ND and Texas, by playing those teams will probably NOT contend for many Big 10 titles because of the schedule. They still would have to play eight Big 10 teams plus the powerhouses/rivals that they want to play. So they want to play a powerhouse during the middle of the season. So be it...just makes it that much more difficult for them in conference play. Makes for very tough schedules for both teams. Do both schools really think they are going to join the Big 10 and dominate? ND hasn't been dominant for many years. Texas, just last year, didn't even go to a bowl game.

Also when you play in a conference like the Big 10, there is NO getting around playing in bad weather. Texas would never be able to adjust their schedules every year so that they played in Texas the last of October and November. They WILL play games in bad weather, further hurting them.

Also, Delaney and the rest of the Big 10 know what ND and Texas are all about. Does anyone really think Delaney does not know that Texas has destroyed two conferences? Delaney is not about to risk the demise of the Big 10 by giving away the kitchen to these two teams. Delaney is a very smart person and the Big 10 ADs are very smart. Texas and ND are not going to be able to railroad the Big 10. WHY? Because the Big 10 does not need either team in reality.

Money will still be split evenly. THAT is not going to change. THAT is exactly why the Big 8/Big 12 imploded. Delaney and the Big10 ADs just are not going to allow that to happen.

The TV dollars involved with those two teams joining the conference would be amazing and would dwarf anything that SEC could demand. The Big10 network would have tremendous advertising and could perhaps challenge ESPN in college football. ESPN would HATE to see Texas join the Big 10 and probably ND, just because of the potential of the Big10 network. The Big10 would go national with those two teams joining. Plus the potential matchups if ND and Texas joined would be amazing. Think TV networks/ESPN would not want those games. Plus academically both (espeically Texas) would fit right in with the Big 10. The Big 10s recruiting would open up the state of Texas.

Just think about a Nebraska/Texas matchup...think there would be no hate between those two? ND/Mich, ND/Mich St, ND/Purdue means conference games and would up the ante for all of those teams. So Texas/ND want to play each other every year...let them, that means an automatic loss for one of them in conference play. Think most Iowa fans would not like to see a Iowa/ND, Iowa/Texas game or Wisconsin would not like to have a shot at the domers and Texas? Nebraska/ND...think that would draw any interest? OSU vs Texas/ND, Penn St vs Texas/ND; Michigan vs Texas; MSU vs Texas. Incredible game interest with most of these matchups nationally. Think the USC/ND game or the Texas/Oklahoma game wouldn't mean a little more? Incredible money to be had for all in the Big 10. Two teams joining that bring tremendous money with them. ND has its own major TV network--think NBC, CBS, Fox, ESPN might come begging for some TV rights to the Big 10?

Plus if the Big 10 gets those two teams, the Big 10 does not need to go beyond 14 teams.

And Iowa, I don't worry about Iowa holding its own with these two new additions.

If this was only about the CIC and academics, Texas would be a slam dunk. UT is better than almost every current Big Ten university. Unfortunately, their athletic department has a history of screwing things up with other conference members.

Excellent analysis as usual.

If this happens and the B1G goes to 16 teams, I do like Mizzou and either Pitt, Va Tech, or Maryland.

BTW, if cowChip Brown is reporting it, it probably won't happen. He makes Bleacher Report look like a reputable news outlet.

SWC. Big 12.

The fear is not irrational in the least.

It is irrational. The Big 12 schools need Texas more than Texas needs the Big 12. Schools like Baylor, Kansas State, Kansas & Iowa State need Texas. Texas says 'jump' & they ask 'how high.'

In contrast, Texas needs the Big Ten more than the Big Ten needs Texas. Texas has to convince the Big Ten that it should be a member.

I can just see Delaney telling Dodd: "Just shut up & count your money."

You guys really believe the Big Ten would ever admit a school with different rules than what they use for everyone in the conference?

Seriously....there are only two teams worth expanding the B1G for....Texas and ND. IF and hopefully no expansion ever occurs again...if they were to be invited it would be on the B1G's terms and not on any individual schools. Period.
