Tennessee hits rock bottom

I thought the same. The problem is, let's say Urban decides to retire again in a couple of years, even though he's young, you never know. Does Campbell need to go somewhere bigger to get the OSU job? Is going 7-5 a couple of times going to be good enough, knowing that this is a job that so many would want, even guys at big schools? That's why I thought he'd jump sooner rather than later.

i think that if Campbell turned UT into a contender in the SEC, he'll have enough cache to be considered for OSU. But he'd have to have at least a 5 year proven winning track record at a school like UT. So, if urban doesn't stay 5 years, timing might hurt him.

Its officially meltdown time in Knoxville right now, this is gone beyond the Chizik at Auburn level of fan rejection to a whole 'nuther level!

I hope they do have to pay that rumored $20 million buyout for backing out of the signed memorandum of understanding

Someone just reminded me that Butch Jones basically punished a kid for helping out a sex assault victim when the bad guys were football players. He told the player that he "betrayed the team" after the ordeal.

Now social media mob is jumping to conclusions and connecting dots for Schiano that don't connect quite as well as people think.

My guess is that Tennessee won't even need to hire a coach next year. They'll just take a twitter poll on what the play calls should be. It might result in a few delay of game penalties, but what the heck, everyone will at least get their opportunity to participate - what an egalitarian way of running the program. Everyone is in charge, so no one is in charge.

Hmm. Well, Earle Bruce left Iowa St for OSU, after having three 8 win seasons at Iowa St. So there is a precedent of Iowa St losing a coach to OSU. BTW, Bruce was the ONLY coach since 1920 to leave ISU with a winning record.

True. I was thinking of how there are more lateral moves these days with coaches wearing out their welcome at their schools. Won't say it can't happen, but I just thought, if Campbell really does have his eyes on that job, that he would go somewhere bigger/better first and then to OSU.

What a shipshow this has turned into. TN even considering the guy shows you where their program is. Regardless of the whatever happened at PSU part of it Shiano just shouldn't have been on their short list of canidates. It would be an odd fit and he's just not that good. Peyton Manning himself couldn't save this mess now. It's strait up crazy with 'the inmates running the prison' Oh wait can you say that and not be called racist? But that's what that's turned into since the AD caved and caved that fast.

Rocky Top has hit Rocky Bottom.

This lack of leadership just got REALLY expensive:

1. First, they've got the buyout for Butch Jones to pay which has been estimated at $7M.
2. Then they've got whatever the liquidated damages the MOU with GS would entail. Using Rick Barnes' MOU with Tennessee to become their basketball coach as an example, the MOU probably has liquidated damages of $1M for each season not coached. Typical football coach deals are 6 years, so that's $6M.
3. Then, with the shit storm that has gone on with the search, my guess is that the price just rose probably $1M/year to get someone to take the job. Over 6 years, that's an add'l $6M more than they would have otherwise paid.

So all told, this whole fiasco is going to end up costing Tennessee somewhere in the neighborhood of $20M when it's all said and done.

Someone should get fired for that, but with universities, and athletic departments in particular, being a "good old boys" club....I doubt that happens.

What's funny is they initially passed on Campbell because of his buyout with Iowa State. Turns out this Greg Shiano fiasco is going to end up costing them even more.
It'd be tough for them to justify going after the next 'hot up and coming guy' and spending a ton to buy him out to boot. They need to be looking for some proven commodity now. Be it Kevin Sumlin, Jimbo Fisher someone like that. I doubt they hire a current assistant or Campbell type at a smaller school. That's what Butch Jones was when they got him. I expect them to go a different route now especially.

Who knows if any of that is true though. I don't know all the details but I'm not sure why Fisher would want to leave FSU so badly.

Yeah I'm not sure either he's been there awhile now and maybe he's just worn out his welcome. Coaching Winston for a few years had to age him in dog years even for coaching. Talk about a guy that made a coaches job impossible. He was by no means the type of kid you want leading your program but his talent was so good he felt like he had to bend over backwards to keep him on the field.

Other rumors are that Tennessee has dangled a $10,000,000 annual contract in front of Jon Gruden. $8,000,000 per year for his staff

LOL

The dude has the BEST football related gig you can get. It'd take a kings ransom for him to consider it. I just think he doesn't want a college gig period. He's not into recruiting and all that goes with that. He's a pro guy. He may or may not end up back there for the perfect scenario (young established team, franchise QB, total control lots of $) But he's not going back settling for one thing he wouldn't want that's for sure

Absolutely. ESPN pays him around $6.5 million a year to yell stupid stuff on TV for 17 weeks a year. Why on earth would you pass that up.

Exactly. He's still around the game gets to sit down and coach players going out into the draft a little. Granted it's not the same and running out of the tunnel on game days and all the pressure that they love having to try and win games. But the lack of stress of not being able to lose games either would be invaluable and the free time he has can only be even better as far as having a family life. You'd be hard pressed to pry me away from the gig he's currently got and that seems to be the case with him

I think I've read it's been kind of an open secret that he hasn't really gotten along with the administration down there for a while. With the kind of money A&M can throw around, why not? He would get to go back to the SEC and you have to wonder how many more years Saban will be around (he's 66).
