Smith Calls Out Stanley In Postgame

The main problem is the o-line guys. It starts there with the snap of the ball. If your o-line can’t block, everything else is bound to go awry. We’ve had some injuries. Banwart gone for season and Schott out for who knows how long. We are playing guys who don’t have enough game time experience yet. I can’t start putting blame on the staff, Stanley, the RB’s or the WR’s just yet. Injuries happen. We finally got our defensive secondary back and hopefully heathy from here on out. Truth is, you can’t win games if you don’t control the line of scrimmage, period. It’s hard to run or throw the ball when you are running for your life. I would like to see Iowa, in the future, to continue to recruit pro style QB’s but recruit the kinda guys who are also capable of beating a team with his feet. This is the one area of our system that I think needs to change down the line. If you look around, historically, these are the kind of teams we have trouble stopping. We need that skill set at our QB position. We need to be able to scramble when a play breaks down. We need to take a longer look at Mansell next year instead of Petras. Mansell is supposed to be able to run some. How he got passed by Petras this year is mystery to me. He may be a better passer, but Mansell may be the better option next year. But that’s a topic for another time.
I agree, but the embarrassing thing is that neither Schott nor Banwart are particularly good either. For whatever reason, we've completely failed being prepared at the guard spots.

Most receivers are wide open because of a defensive breakdown or finding the weakness in a zone.

Most receivers getting “open” separation vs a man is a myth. If you got a step on a defender (that isn’t a LB) then you are “open”.

That was a horribly under-thrown ball.
I watched the play again. The ball was under thrown but not by much. Ironically, if Smith had the speed to separate, it definitely would have been an INT. The fact that it was a little under thrown allowed Smith to make a play on the ball.

I wonder if Jackson and Wirfs have gotten any guard reps in practice.

We're at the point now where we may have to move one or both of them over until this damage is under control, and take our chances with Kallenberger and Plumb at the tackle spots.

This may sound silly or desperate, but so is our situation. Our future opponents are watching these games too.

KF does like athletes.
He also likes an audience that cannot question him.
Very Fryowaish
You don’t quote me because you’re afraid that I’ll embarrass you. You hope I’ll just not see the post and then I won’t make an ass out of you. That’s weak.

Just like @Joshbrown - Rob didn’t ban your other account from before, why don’t you just man up and use it? I mean, I have a DM confirming that you and JoshBrown are the same guy (or girl)...just switch back to avoid the confusion for us.

Apparently the guys coming in on the OL under the The next man in philosophy aren't capable of stepping up...which is disappointing and you gotta wonder about the coaching on that side. This thing is going to go south quickly. My remaining projections:

Purdue LOSS
NW DRAW
Wisconsin LOLOL who are we kidding this will be a 40 point blowout loss in Madison
Illinois WIN
Nebraska . WIN
Minnesota LOSS

This has got all the ear marks of a 6-6 season....Motor Shitty Bowl here we come!! Detroit in the winter what a shit hole.

Dunno about 6-6, I mean, all things considered, we are not a bad team. More of a "good, but not great" team that figures out how to play below capabilities. Problem is, we play a lot of shitty teams that try and figure out how to win "those one or two games" that give them hope next season will be a bit better. And, we usually end up being one of "those games". Coaching is still a work in progress. Like I saw a few times last night, lets try the exact same play because it worked, only to get stuffed for a loss.

I agree Wisconsin is a loss, and it will not be pretty. I have a chance to go to that game, but as much as I wanted to a few weeks ago, I am having reservations though I do know a few good pizza joints in Madison. Well see.

And, yes, we will have another loss besides, and right now I would have to say Minnesota because they have that extra intangible of believing they are better than they are, IMO.

Right now, I would say 8-4 is about what we can realistically hope for. 7-5 is a strong possibility, but would be a disappointment. 9-3? Maybe if something great and wonderful happens, but this is Iowa football, so I don't have a lot of upside hope.

Oh well, and I had a a glimmer of hope when I predicted a win at Michigan, but that "kool aid" has long since been pissed out of my system. Going to stick to beer. The after effects wear off faster.

Keep insulting him and he will spill the beans, just like the little boy who got under Kareem's skin in the movie Airplane by telling him that he didn't work hard enough on defense and saved himself for the playoffs.

"Roger Murdoch" fessed up to who he really was.

Everything starts with the OLine, you can't get better receiver or RB play when the line isn't blocking anybody.
True. Then again a running back every once in awhile can throw a legal block that actually works or when there is a hole get out of the quicksand like Sargent

It's ironic you said that. I just posted on another thread that - if it were up to me - I would move Wirfs to LG and start Kallenberger at RT.

First of all, we are not going to lose to Purdue or NW. They have bigger problems than we do. That’s why they are at the bottom of the standings. Wisconsin will be a loss unless we pull some giant rabbit outta our ass. Illinois and Nebraska are definitely on the winnable side of the slate. As far as Minnesota goes, that is a tossup. We do have them at home and they are just getting to the meat of their schedule. They haven’t played anybody with a pulse yet.

The bolded part did make me chuckle a bit. How many times has this been said about NW and they beat Iowa? Quite a few I'd imagine because they've beaten Iowa a lot over the last 15 years.

You can't assume anything with Iowa. Good or bad. Particularly the bad

What have you seen from this team that makes you think we can beat either of them? At this point I'd be surprised if we even make a bowl game. One TD in two games is fucking unconscionably bad. We weren't facing some juggernaut defenses. I really don't think we win more than 6 games this season.

So are you actually trying to build a case that the running back is the bigger problem than the offensive line?

LMAO!! You certainly did fall off the ledge. Hahahaha

The one thing Iowa has going for them is their East division teams are out of the way. They only have West division tomato cans and Wisconsin left.

Normally I'd say I feel good against Minnesota and Nebraska's defenses but Iowa's offense might be worse than those 2 units.

I think they'll get a win against Illinois. The rest will probably be much like the last decade of Iowa football which comes down to one question: How many times can a DC named Parker win a game for the Ferentz family?

Check again bro. Both are top 20 Defenses in almost every category. They are both very good defenses. Neither is a good offense, but lol guess what... neither is ours.

Absolutely nothing taken from Michigan or PSU's defenses because they definitely both played praiseworthy, but our OL is 1999 bad. I'm not sure either of those defense's will have an easier B1G conference game.

Ok, this is the first thread I've read since last night. A whole lot of stupid going on. Questioning our offensive scheme, Stanley being called out...etc.

Stanley isn't the issue. When your interior line play is getting blown up on almost every play...I'm going out on a limb and saying that fact is the major issue. Our left guard got beat all night last night and he was barely slowing anyone down in the passing game. It was terrible...and I'm talking 2012 bad. It wasn't just that though...they aren't in sync with the line calls...and that may be on Linderbaum. There were plays where a guy pulls and the line doesn't fill fold down to pick up the DT. It was crazy...this is on the OL coach and OC.

I also think Smith is calling out BF more than Stanley...there are primary and secondary receivers on every route...Smith thinks he should be the guy. Hard to argue with him.

For those not paying attention our route trees are more complex than they have ever been. We have guys open all the time, more so than any year I can remember. First, they have to catch the ball (Tracy), second, the QB needs a stable pocket.

Lastly, people saying this team will pack it in and go downhill are full of shit. That may be the dumbest comment I've seen on this board. You can criticize KF all you want...but his players play for him. The defense will continue to get better, and hopefully, they can get better on the interior of the O-line...but his players won't quit. The players we recruit have no quit in them...that's a prerequisite for being at Iowa...and it's conditioned from the moment they get here. These guys play for eachother...they won't quit on their brothers. They want to win.

Lastly, we just played two of the three best defenses we will play all year. It gets easier from here, outside of Wisconsin. To me, it's OL play period as to why we lost these two games.

very well said...thank you.

ModebaSan ok I just want to make sure I have your call sign correct so I can correct you once we lose either the Purdont game and/or the NW game. At the beginning of the year I had Minnesota in the definite win category not anymore.
