Smith Calls Out Stanley In Postgame

TD throw???? Smith probably made the catch of the year in college football to haul in that severely underthrown ball.

Even a lot of pro QBs get bailed out by great catches by their wide receivers. Larry Fitzgerald and others have made a living in going up and grabbing balls that are not entirely on target.

I am not defending Nate because his miss behind Smith on the short slant at the goal line was really bad.

I had read on this site that Nate had spent time this summer with some good QB coaches so I hoped his accuracy would improve. Maybe not

When Smith watches the film he will see along with everyone else one major problem...the o line. They simply were man handled by Penn St. It's not all on Nate he was under duress most every play. He wasn't extremely accurate but after the beat down he took I can understand it. Also, the film will show Sargent disappeared on picking up a blitz up the middle. He was terrible .

He will also see that he better get better separation. Brandon Smith made one hell of a catch but he had to make one hell of a catch because he had ZERO separations. So if he wants to say I can’t get myself the ball, he is Rights And he better Work on that as well.

Iowa receivers certainly have multiple opportunities to go get passes that aren’t on target

Yes, I added a sentence to the post you quoted. After all this time for Nate the word is inconsistent. He rifles some really good passes and floats a nice touch pass then he misses an easy slant for a TD.

Or a tackle. The next tackle Young breaks will be his first. Never seen a 225lb power back go down with arm tackles like him.
I bet he breaks Koerner's tackles during the week.

Jack had a terrible, terrible game tackling. Missed several chances to get them off the field, including the critical final drive.

Now that Merriweather is back I wonder if they will revisit that position. Don't know for sure how healthy Kaeveon is.

not a chance he’s benched, but I guarantee he hears about it. The more alarming thing to me is that frustration like this can tear apart locker rooms, and once that happens? Hello, 7-5 and transfers.

If this were the NFL the locker room it would definitely be divided now. The Vikings are the NFL version of Iowa and look at all the thinly veiled shots taken at Cousins. KF will squash this, but man there has to be a lot of frustration in that locker room.

If you are on defense right now you are looking at the offense sideways. In order to win everything is dependent on you I could see how that could cause some tension.

Brandon was frustrated, as I'm sure everyone else was, but if he was truly pinning it on Nate he would have mentally checked out after the missed slant pass on the goal line. He wouldn't have laid out to make the incredible TD catch later.

Just my take on it.

That Penn State QB deserves some credit for standing in there and making some plays. He was getting pummeled, and I posted early in the game that he was going to gift the ball to us in a critical spot.

He never did.

The interior of the offensive line is just bad right now.

Iowa has Smith Marsette and Smith on the outside and they’re throwing deep balls to Raigani?? What in the actual F
  • Raigani had to make the play down the sideline when Stanley threw to the back shoulder. That's a play a power five level receiver needs to make.
  • Brandon and ISM both made nice plays on deep ups to the outside when they did get their opportunity.
  • Our passing game won't hit on all cylinders if we can't get the running game going and use play action. Once again we were in second and long too often. Once again the opposing defense was guessing right on when to run blitz and what gaps to shoot. The first and goal just before the missed slant pass saw half of PSU's defense in our backfield.
  • A team with a clue, after shit canning the OL coach, would consider moving Wirfs, Jackson or both to guard until the damage is controlled. We know none of this will happen.

I see your point, but it took nearly 2 quarters before the PSU offense could find any rhythm and Iowa couldn't take advantage of it.

The main problem is the o-line guys. It starts there with the snap of the ball. If your o-line can’t block, everything else is bound to go awry. We’ve had some injuries. Banwart gone for season and Schott out for who knows how long. We are playing guys who don’t have enough game time experience yet. I can’t start putting blame on the staff, Stanley, the RB’s or the WR’s just yet. Injuries happen. We finally got our defensive secondary back and hopefully heathy from here on out. Truth is, you can’t win games if you don’t control the line of scrimmage, period. It’s hard to run or throw the ball when you are running for your life. I would like to see Iowa, in the future, to continue to recruit pro style QB’s but recruit the kinda guys who are also capable of beating a team with his feet. This is the one area of our system that I think needs to change down the line. If you look around, historically, these are the kind of teams we have trouble stopping. We need that skill set at our QB position. We need to be able to scramble when a play breaks down. We need to take a longer look at Mansell next year instead of Petras. Mansell is supposed to be able to run some. How he got passed by Petras this year is mystery to me. He may be a better passer, but Mansell may be the better option next year. But that’s a topic for another time.

I'm not going to fall for the injuries/no experience angle. Wisconsin replaced FOUR offensive line starters from last year, both guards and both tackles.

But I agree with your overall premise. Our 2012 season went down the shitter the moment we lost two offensive linemen in the same game, so it is a factor.

I agree with you to a point. Those backups were at least given time to develop behind those guys for a couple of years, so they were ready when their names were called.

I amended my post. Wisconsin didn't replace those guys on the fly. They had the entire off-season and preseason to prepare.

Was Stanley actually injured enough to not be in the game??

But I agree that Stanley can make 3 really good throws then he throws a really bad pass like the one behind B Smith on the short slant at the goal like.

His TD throw, his bullet to Weiting for about 25 yards, some great throws.

But it seems he locks up or his mechanics go awry when he has a short throw he knows is upcoming. It is definitely like he is thinking about the throw instead of it being natural.

Was referring to CJ v Florida.
