Smith Calls Out Stanley In Postgame

i want to be clear that i still think stanley should be the starter. but B.S. with no B.S. is right on. stanley is a 3 yr SR starter and he now has 8 tds and 4 ints in 6 games. halfway through his SR season he has those stats.

now, the greater faults lay with kirk, brian and polasek. our entire offensive design sucks. our route trees are from the 70's, except when we run our 3 yard horizontals on 3rd and 8. we need an brand new offensive scheme. period. and kirk and brian aren't going to do that. so, sit back, put your feet up and enjoy the ride.

Benching Stanley isn't even close to the answer. He has the experience. What Iowa needs is better offensive line play. Better offensive line coaching.

"Has the experience" means "isn't good enough to enter the NFL draft and your recruiting has been so bad that you can't find anyone better".

You also forgot better running back play and receiver play

It all starts with the offensive line. As for the running backs, they are all average at best. Except for Goodson. And he needs at least another year of seasoning. Iowa's receivers are good. But as B Smith said; He can't get the ball to himself.

Was Stanley actually injured enough to not be in the game??

But I agree that Stanley can make 3 really good throws then he throws a really bad pass like the one behind B Smith on the short slant at the goal like.

His TD throw, his bullet to Weiting for about 25 yards, some great throws.

But it seems he locks up or his mechanics go awry when he has a short throw he knows is upcoming. It is definitely like he is thinking about the throw instead of it being natural.

He's running for his life out there, as best he can. Our interior OL is straight up awful. You can't make up for a poor interior line. What are you going to do? Snap it sideways?

There is a clear correlation with pressures and INTs and lack of TDs. He has about two seconds to get rid of the ball. Unless Iowa can show a credible draw or screen game out of shotgun, this offense will never move the ball consistently enough to get points against teams with a good line.

Ok, this is the first thread I've read since last night. A whole lot of stupid going on. Questioning our offensive scheme, Stanley being called out...etc.

Stanley isn't the issue. When your interior line play is getting blown up on almost every play...I'm going out on a limb and saying that fact is the major issue. Our left guard got beat all night last night and he was barely slowing anyone down in the passing game. It was terrible...and I'm talking 2012 bad. It wasn't just that though...they aren't in sync with the line calls...and that may be on Linderbaum. There were plays where a guy pulls and the line doesn't fill fold down to pick up the DT. It was crazy...this is on the OL coach and OC.

I also think Smith is calling out BF more than Stanley...there are primary and secondary receivers on every route...Smith thinks he should be the guy. Hard to argue with him.

For those not paying attention our route trees are more complex than they have ever been. We have guys open all the time, more so than any year I can remember. First, they have to catch the ball (Tracy), second, the QB needs a stable pocket.

Lastly, people saying this team will pack it in and go downhill are full of shit. That may be the dumbest comment I've seen on this board. You can criticize KF all you want...but his players play for him. The defense will continue to get better, and hopefully, they can get better on the interior of the O-line...but his players won't quit. The players we recruit have no quit in them...that's a prerequisite for being at Iowa...and it's conditioned from the moment they get here. These guys play for eachother...they won't quit on their brothers. They want to win.

Lastly, we just played two of the three best defenses we will play all year. It gets easier from here, outside of Wisconsin. To me, it's OL play period as to why we lost these two games.

Apparently the guys coming in on the OL under the The next man in philosophy aren't capable of stepping up...which is disappointing and you gotta wonder about the coaching on that side. This thing is going to go south quickly. My remaining projections:

Purdue LOSS
NW DRAW
Wisconsin LOLOL who are we kidding this will be a 40 point blowout loss in Madison
Illinois WIN
Nebraska . WIN
Minnesota LOSS

This has got all the ear marks of a 6-6 season....Motor Shitty Bowl here we come!! Detroit in the winter what a shit hole.

I do think you pretty much nailed it. Not sure but believe Banwart's injury mid week didn't help this already poor situation.

I agree with you to a point. Those backups were at least given time to develop behind those guys for a couple of years, so they were ready when their names were called.

Ince, Kallenberger, the Paulsens and others are not freshmen.
BF recruited and helped develop some of these guys.
Have we ever had Wisconsin's model? Do they recruit 240 - 260 lb lineman and attempt to add 50 lbs or more onto their frames? This takes a few years and neutralizes or diminishes your depth. Linderbaum is a tough sob and still learning but he is definitely undersized. We have had a few successes doing this, Robert Gallery is the poster child for this, but maybe we need a few more Bulagas and Wirfs and Wisky's naturally big bratswurst eating boys.

And lose the finesse zone blocking scheme.

And a new O line coach and OC.

And...

I'll take the wager with Purdue. Our defense is legit...and getting healthy. Purdue's defense sucks...and they don't have the pass rushers that Penn State and Michigan have.

Who has Minnesota played. Nebraska is the best team they have played...and that is Nebraska without Adrian Martinez. In other words, they have played no one. Penn State is going to go into Minnesota and issue a beat down...bad. Then they come to Iowa licking their wounds.

NW is a good defensive team...but they are not good offensively. Our defense will keep them off the board. It's a dogfight game though.

5-1 is what I think happens through the rest of the season. It won't be easy...but if we can create a stable pocket...it's possible.

yep, that is a lot of it. our plays suck, also, but that's because of our pro style scheme is ancient. it is just astounding that our OL can be so consistently confused and while being under pressure can make any qb skittish, and i can't fault stanley for that, he is the leader, the 3 yr SR starter and it is his responsibility to make plays. when you aren't under pressure, you have to find it in yourself to not be panicked and to take the proper time. and if you are pressured, you need to throw it away and not take sacks or spend forever waiting for something downfield because that contributes to OL holding calls. what if our patterns were slants and slugo's and crossing routes 10 yards down field? the passing game could look completely different and our OL should be able to block and stanley should be able to get into rhythm. and why no tempo?

The O line problems fall squarely on the HC, OC and O Line coach. You have to recruit depth. You cant hope n one gets hurt. Thats dumb. Wiscy has a bunch of big local kids that play for them. Their lines never seem to have the problems we have. Is that recruiting or coaching or both?

I know our line play is bad. But 3 guys are the only ones we can blame. And its not Stanley and the the 2 guards.

Stanley is the QB, he gets the praise and he's the goat, it's a package deal. His mistakes are magnified and the offensive line gets to hide a little, but your right the line could not block last night for the pass or run. I see what your seeing, open receivers, but plays like the 2-point conversion and the goal-line slant are what sticks out in people's minds. A 3-year starter passing behind a receiver or passing to a covered receiver makes it tough for me to not see Stanley as the problem. Stanley's "touchdown" throw to Smith looked a lot like an interception until Smith played DB. Man, that guy might be on the wrong side of the ball.

He will also see that he better get better separation. Brandon Smith made one hell of a catch but he had to make one hell of a catch because he had ZERO separations. So if he wants to say I can’t get myself the ball, he is Rights And he better Work on that as well.
Most receivers are wide open because of a defensive breakdown or finding the weakness in a zone.

Most receivers getting “open” separation vs a man is a myth. If you got a step on a defender (that isn’t a LB) then you are “open”.

That was a horribly under-thrown ball.

Other than that...

The interior of the Iowa o-line is awful and BF can’t scheme around it. Michigan and PSU are good on defense, but you will never see those squads as vulnerable as they were this year. It was a missed opportunity plain and simple.

As for the players, they will not quit on Ferentz, but I can see how some are getting frustrated. You are dependent on one side of the ball to do everything and it is too much.

This ^

Brandon Smith has huge hands and can jump through the roof, but he lacks what truly great WRs have - suddenness. He has always struggled getting separation in and out of his breaks, and that's not going to change. It's something that Iowa has lacked at the WR position for some time with only a few exceptions.

Also, who's to say he's not calling out the interior of our offensive line here? It could be Tom Brady back there, but when d-linemen are in your face consistently after matador pass-blocking by your guards, it's not going to matter. Nate was far from perfect, but he also was far from the problem too.
