Silas Redd and other PSU transfer hullabaloo

That is definitely a critical mass. I expect it might tip the scales for some of the original group of re-commits.

That is about 10% of their scholarship players that have transferred. How does their scholarship limit work exactly? Are they limited to no more than 15 per year and 65 total? If there is a hard 15 per year for the next four years limit. I could easily see their number of scholarship players in 4 years under 60 because they will not have the luxury of redshirting anyone and the normal attrition from transfers and career ending injuries.

If they miss on just 10% of their recruits not panning out over those years and another 10% leave then the have probably 50 scholarship players in the 2016 season (barely a 2 deep).

It will also be interesting to see who they get to fill the last 5 or so spots in their class this year. That could be an indicator of the quality of recruit they are going to get over the three remaining years of scholarship limitations.

I believe so, yes.

They have 20 (1 already transferred out so we'll use 19 here) seniors. So if you take away the 6 scholarships they've lost through transfer that puts them at 60. their class is already at 12.

So that puts them at 72 assuming no one transfers out next year. So will they not be able to extend scholarships to all of their current verbals?

No current or incoming (2012) player can lose their scholarship. So, that may mean, if their aren't more transfers, some or most of next year's class won't actually be coming in.

This is really where their problems begin.

Is there confirmation that OSU is recruiting Lynch? Just wondering, because I'm pretty sure Urban Meyer said at media days that he wasn't going to go after them... not that you can take anything he says seriously.

I searched and didn't see anything. All I could find is that they were looking at him prior to his commitment to PSU. I didn't even see that they had offered.

Ic. Well if they are looking at him it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Would suck to see him leave PSU and go to OSU instead of Iowa. That's the kind of sheister Urban Meyer is though. He'll wheel and deal his way through recruiting behind closed doors just like the Vest did before him.

I am glad Iowa will not face Redd in Kinnick in the fall, but maybe we face him in Pasadena on Jan 1 anyway,eh?.....I can live with that.

Do they have to be at 65 by next season?

I don't think so. If you look at the sanctions, I believe the way it reads is that their scholarship ceiling is reduced by 10 next year (to 75) and then by 20 (to 65) each of the next three years. Their limit is 15 scholarships each class for the next 4 years.

Not that it means a whole lot, but both Urban Meyer and Gene Smith both say that they've hit their scholarship limits imposed by the NCAA and have no desire or ability to bring in any PSU players.

Gotcha, that make a bit more sense.

It's been confirmed on BWI rivals.

For a period of four years commencing with the 2013-2014 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 academic year, the NCAA imposes a limit of 15 initial grants-in-aid (from a maximum of 25 allowed) and for a period of four years commencing with the 2014-2015 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2017-2018 academic year a limit of 65 total grants-in-aid (from a maximum of 85 allowed) for football during each of those specified years.

It actually looks like the 65 rule is just offset by a year from the 15 per year limit. So, next year (2013) they can only take 15 players, but still have 85 on roster and the year following (2014) have to be down to 65 overall.

The math is they were at 85 as of July 1st this year.

Subtract:
20 seniors
5 transfers so far
? any additional transfers

That leaves at most 60 returning players (less if more players transfer before start of 2013 season).

15 allowed scholarship recruits means their maximum number of players is 75 for the 2013 season. No way they are any higher than this next year.

I'm not arguing the numbers that they MAY have on the roster this year and next. I'm talking about what is allowed. It looks like they could give any Extras to current walk-ons.
