Silas Redd and other PSU transfer hullabaloo

Jon,

Are you 100% sure on this?

I asked Rittenberg on twitter and he said only if they played in a game. Been trying to get a definitive answer but the link you posted doesn't really spell it out clearly.

Yeah, the NCAA page is a bit vague on this....it talks about competition and then 2013. I think 8/6 is the deadline for this year playing decisions, which is why Akeel Lynch is going to decide on 8/5

Yeah it's the definition of competition that's eluding me.

Yes, me too. This was our discussion the other day.

JD -- what if a player doesn't go to PSU camp? Then, they wouldn't have competed and would still be able to transfer and play, correct? Or is that a hard deadline?

How many from the incoming class have bailed?

Those are the real head-scratchers for me. They haven't even started their college experience yet, and the soonest they could possibly play in a bowl game or the Big Ten title game is their junior year? Make that senior year, actually, because how can Penn State possibly redshirt anyone in coming years?

Maybe the importance of playing in a title game and bowl games are overemphasized by the fans. Even so, you'd have to wonder how much any of these freshmen will enjoy playing the game the next few years. They'll lose a ton of games, be thrown into game action before their bodies are ready to compete, and take a physical pounding as the depth of the program erodes.

It'll be like playing for Indiana, except nobody will feel sorry for them.

I can't see how the majority of the incoming class stays intact over the next several days.

I think you are right on your points. The more players that leave makes it easier for others to do the same. No one really wants to be the first to jump off the ship. When you see the sharks aren't there then it makes it easier. I would be more concerned about how Penn St. fans would treat me, but focus on how good my new family will treat me.

I think the bowl games matter to the players as well. No one wants to play for nothing. Bowl games get you more face-time for the NFL. Lets not forget you get a sweet paid vacation and gifts. Some receive PS3s. I think they can receive up to $500 in gifts.

As stated earlier...I think a lot of the players are staying for the fanbase based on the support they've been shown so far, to be viewed as heroes for staying. That said once the losing starts I wonder how long the hero status will remain until the fans begin running players off campus due to unrealistic expectations.

D tackle, or O tackle? And did we, or do we have a chance? I don't follow recruiting very closely, but I am following this thread.

Re: Silas Redd

That Lane Kiffin is one hell of a guy.

Lenny ‏@LJCoviello
“USC walk-on likely to be stripped of schollie for Silas Redd is "heartbroken.

It was also reported that USC was "anticipating an academic ineligibility". That the NCAA allowed USC or any other probate school to accept these transfers is disgusting.

If they haven't left by now they are probably staying.

Or they decided that they did not want to make a decision in two weeks then go to a new school and compete for a job without the benefit of summer training or spring practice.

I think the number that transferred this fall maybe small compared to the number that change schools in January. I would have opted to play one more year, research where I want to go, contact those schools in December (because I am not playing in a bowl game), transfer at the start of the 2nd semester, and be on my new campus for spring practice.
